Like the title says, I’m new to the Survival spec. I’ve played Hunter off and on since day one of launch (I always play Ranger/ Hunter archetype mains as that’s been my favorite since the 80’s in every RPG I’ve ever played).
Up until 9.2, my Ally main was a MM and my Horde main was a BM. I rolled up this SV alt for poops and giggles, and was quite surprised by how much I’m loving this SV alt. I love it so much that I want to make it my new main.
Any tips for PvP and how to play SV in M+? Despite the fun I’m having on this alt, I feel like it isn’t strong enough to engage bosses in melee and the ranged is pretty weak on world rares (but using ranged cuts down on dying).
Welcome to the spear club. I don’t have much to offer in regards to PvP, but for Mythic+ the best advice I can offer is read the guide on Icy-veins and put it to practice. Your primary role and DPS will be done at melee range.
Use your bombs. They do pretty reasonable damage, especially in Area Damage. For multiple mobs, Carve (Butchery if talented) reduces CD of Bombs by a second per mob hit. Use it in Area Damage to get Bombs ready faster. Pretty much the Area Damage life of Survival.
Of course . . . . . . . . . manage your pet. In instances, if your group is trying to take shortcuts, especially ridiculous ones and ones that make no sense, your Best Buddy (pet) can potentially aggro some of those said mobs. So know what areas will cause your pet to take a rather unusual pathing route that can cause it to aggro a bunch of mobs, especially the mobs you’re trying to skip (their reduced aggro radius doesn’t always guarantee they won’t aggro something). They also generate Focus through Kill Command, which is a pretty big deal, so yeah, whether they SURVIVE does matter.
Well, if you played Beast Master, you already know this.
Going to add onto this just a little bit. If you find yourself asking “Will my pet be stupid here?” when attempting a skip, even a skip you’ve done before on another class; the better and safer option is to just dismiss your pet, perform the skip, and then resummon. At best you only lose about 6ish seconds. At worst your pet aggros stuff and wipes the group.
You’ll want to use a tenacity pet in group content (Raiding and M+) if your group has a shaman or mage, otherwise you’ll want to use ferocity. For PvP cunning is the way to go. Something with mortal strike, so I’d suggest a Raptor personally.
My dumb, beginners, random BG advice for SV is to make note of what type of enemy you are fighting. Use your ranged abilities to stay safe and kite. If your enemy is wearing plate armor, dot them up with poison, and burning damage and bleeds. If your enemy is wearing a dress, harpoon in and spear them down.
Why undead raptor specifically if you don’t mind me asking? Does the undead family have some special buff I don’t know about? I haven’t got the tome to tame them.
It cant be scare beasted. It is undead for the purposes of spells that affect beasts. Keeping a regular raptor for fights against dks or palas is a good idea too.
For PvE: make sure you angle yourself so that your bombs hit the entire pack is probably my largest tip. That and don’t forget to carve off cd to reset your bomb even more.
