New to RP and I’m struggling to find a community?

I’ve joined a few “communities” (the blizzard feature) and I am usually the only one online out of hundreds. Or the ones that may be active are capped. I have browsed the guild finder and there’s a few issues:

  1. A lot of the guilds in the guild finder are off-server. I know guilds can be cross sever now however from what I can tell these servers aren’t actually “merged” with MG and as such you aren’t going to run into your guildie out in the wild, or ever see them unless you group together. Correct me if I am wrong! For this reason I really didn’t want to join an off-server guild. But I am open to the idea if it is active enough with in-game chatting and such.

  2. No way to tell when a listing was posted… 95% of the guilds seem abandoned, last being updated in Shadowlands.

  3. The few guilds I found that fit my character’s theme were… very discord heavy, with hardly anyone ever online in-game. I don’t mind discord for some things, but I am very much not looking to RP in discord and some of these guilds treat discord participation as totally separate from in-game participation with it’s own ranks and everything and I am really not looking for this at all. I want to be immersed…in-game! I want to see in-game chatter while I’m doing stuff in-game. What’s with the discords? :frowning:

It seems so much harder to find a RP guild! Sites like wowprogress are useless? I’ve seen a few guild leaders post things like they don’t advertise their guilds, and just get new members via RP encounters… but as a new (to the server/rp) player that has no idea where to look for such things, is too shy to walk-up…it seems hopeless…~

The very first week I joined MG, I think I saw many guilds “set up” around the cathedral advertising in Stormwind. I was a bit overwhelmed at that point and just walked around reading, thinking it was a really cool way to recruit but I haven’t actually seen this happening again at least not to that extent. Was it a scheduled event?

I feel like I am missing something vital.

Hi there! It can take a bit of time to find the right fit but with regards to the recruitment event, it is a regular thing! You can find the details and dates here:

Typically a lot of guilds may do their recruitment through the forums here or through other roleplay communities on discord, besides walk-up RP.

There are a great deal of fantastic guilds listed in the forums. Is there a particular theme or angle that you are looking for? Say, something more mercenary, military or magic oriented for example?

Edit: I will note that the recruitment event I mentioned occurs in the valley of heroes and not the cathedral, however a lot of guilds do like to setup and chill in the cathedral area from time to time. The event I linked above is a more scheduled recruitment thing that occurs monthly.

What type of guild are you looking for? that may also help.

Cheers, darling.

I can certainly empathize with the difficulty in finding people to click with. But, at the risk of being didactic (as opposed to merely dazzling), I will say that one thing to keep in mind? You do not necessarily need a guild to have a community.

Please do not think I am saying that guilds do not provide a lot of resources that are difficult to find on their own. This is particularly true in PVP, Raiding, M+, etc. That is true.

But because you mentioned RP? I will say that you may not need to be so rigid. I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in several official and unofficial communities, and a lot of this happens on a gradual basis. Bit by bit. Small interactions with other players.

Are you going to get some stinkers? Absolutely. But the vast majority of what you will get will be, you know. Fine. And on a few rare occasions, it will be amazing. And these are the people who you can, erm, ‘raid’ with.

One or two interactions can become five or six, and so forth. A lot of communities happen organically. Stormwind on Moon Guard does have a rather robust walk-up culture. Many of my friends share the same story: Met some decent people with random walk-ups, and they moved on to continue to RP.

I don’t know - nor would I dare presume - what you are actually looking for with RP, though. I am only saying this because you mentioned being new to RP, and I hate the idea of you (‘you’ being anyone in your situation) feeling like they’re stuck or can’t participate in this hobby because they are LF2RPers then gtg.

This is Monday, and there is Market going on every Monday at the, um…area in Stormwind overlooking the docks. There are a lot of people around there, and seeing people with vendor RP can give you a sense for what someone’s character is about, and potentially what their guild is about. That might help.

Sticking around in other areas - the Slaughtered Lamb, Lion’s Rest (or ‘the park’, if you’re living in the past, man), the Cathedral - will usually show a fair amount of people doing their thing. Moreover, you’ll sometimes see ad hoc or planned recruitment things there.

I do wish you the best of luck. I hope you find something that suits you, but I also hope you take advantage of Moon Guard’s readily available audience. A lot of people just standing around would be happy to have someone approach them for a chat.

Good luck, have fun, and all of that.

My best advice is just make your own kind of music and roll with it!! You may not find RP as fast as you would joining a bunch of Discord projects but hear me out. The large Discord projects only add MINIMAL value to your character and should be treated as a backdrop in the game world. The Discord groups is the WoW version of channel flipping - drop by and check it out and see if there is an interest. LIMIT your time on Discord and focus on the game world, Azeroth. In time, your character will gain friends, allies, your Btag list will soon have a dozen or so other players who will ALWAYS want to hang out! The key is to create an environment to attract players who share interests in your characters.

For guilds, there are different strokes for different players. RP can and will likely attract drama. Being guilded in an off-server PvP / PvE group will insulate your character from the role playing style in the event something goes wrong. Simply put, roleplay guilds are 100% unnecessary and may actually be detrimental to your in-game progression. Unless you are into military themed RP, I would just steer clear of RP guilds.

What works well for ‘me’:

  1. PvE, PvP gaming is guilded off realm on Tichcondrius, Stormrage, etc… This ensures focused gameplay for non-roleplaying rule sets.
  2. Discord use is kept to an absolute minimum. Just export the events calendars to Google and keep on my personal phone. There is almost never a need to start posting on Discord so I just don’t.
  3. RP characters that are rarely played, pop up characters for story telling, along with the army of alts scattered between MG, WRA, ED are generally not guilded as they are used to support main story of RP mains to begin with.

Every response here has been pretty spot on. When I came to MG I was also a little lost. I had a hard time finding the RP I wanted. The advice I got was to keep looking, keep trying, be proactive. RP in a public area, let people see you RP.

Example. I was horde side on WrA and in one of the inns in SMC. I was playing a forsaken and wandered into a crowded bar. I started looking for a missing finger around the other players, around the bar, around the tables, all the while emoting a finger inch worming around the room avoiding being found. After a bit the other players got in on it and it turned into a hilarious RP scene. That turned into getting involved with a group and regular RP.

Long story short, don’t wait for the RP to come to you. Make your own magic and you will be surprised how many players are a little shy and waiting for some RP they can join in on too.

I appreciate the responses and the links! I have bookmarked them, thank you so much

I also appreciate the advice on not needing a guild for RP. That does ultimately seem like it might be a better path for my character. She is a bit darker themed, and none of the merchant/mercenary/military/noble things really feel right. It’s just, as someone who is so freaking shy/anxious/introverted, walking up to anyone/rp’ing to myself feels sooo scary! I thought a guild might help this, but perhaps I am just hurting myself waiting to find one.

I have also experienced a tiny bit of drama I am certainly not used to on non-rp severs. Nothing major yet thankfully, but hadn’t thought of an off server guild acting as a shield of sorts!

Yeah. Sucks to think like that but at the same time don’t want a character you spend much time and care on to simply get bricked resulting in having to reroll. Just skip the RP guilds unless there is one that fits your character and the guilds overall theme. For PvE stuff like raids, Mythics, etc, roll with a guild on Tichondrious for PvE and Stormrage for PvP.

This is a very useful thread full of workable ideas. Kudos to the OP for stepping up and to the rest for sharing your experiences.

Cheers.

Forsaken are truly the most enjoyable characters. Completely objective true fact.

No bias here.
