New to prot tanking, do you use shield block on CD?

Basically just the title. Trying to get some clarification here, should you press shield block basically whenever you can if you are actively tanking?

yes, that’s one of the reasons why warriors stack haste.
Even in raids when I’m not tanking, i like to do more damage with shield slam.

You should aim for 100% shield block up time. That means using both shield block and shield charge on rotation/CD as needed.

ill give you a hint coming into season 2, the best way to play prot warrior is to go back to the char selection screen and pick literally any other tank.

It’s actually quite amazing just how often you’re wrong about literally every tank in this game.

where am i wrong? prot is looking like it is going to end up as the worst tank overall unless they make additional changes to it, then its currently just taking a big L. personally i wish it wasnt that way since it looks like ill be playing one for mythic raid but it is what it is.

Then I would assume you know the class well and can actually answer his question, and maybe even give him a few “new to war tank” tips instead of derailing his thread with nothing related to his question.

i did give him an answer just not the one you like.

Ignore the 19 DK. As to your question OP you want to focus on your haste when gearing a prot warrior so you can keep Shield Block basicly on cooldown. Shield block is your bread and butter for when your headed to tank a pack of melee mobs as it smooths in incoming dmg to something far more manageable. The thing you got to watch for is magic dmg it will rip you apart if you don’t watch your spell reflection and spell Shield blocking. That is where you’re ignore pain will come in to help you deal with magic when you’re two magic shields are on cooldown. You’re best bet is to know you’re fights and what kind of dmg is headed your way at any time. The more you tank the better you’ll get the feel of the packs you pull and the more confident you will find yourself doing said pulls. Also depending on your UI do have a way to watch the healers mana. A prot warrior lives and dies by the state of the healer. They run out of mama you’re going to more than likely run out of life as your self heal options are both limited and not all too powerful. But as long as you do your best just sit back and enjoy warrior tanking it’s quite a fun ride when done correctly.

95% of the playerbase doesn’t play at the point where any of your nonsense is remotely relevant. You regurgitate things from the class discords, that only apply to people pushing top tier keys and try to pass them off as your own. Most people posting on the forums and asking these types of questions, at best, are people who maybe, just maybe, are trying to get their 10s done.

Yes, you always want to keep shield block on CD. The shield block buff will stack with itself so there’s never any waste to pressing it. Combine it with the last stand talent and among the others too, you can have 100% shield block uptime - it is absolutely worth it.

i wonder how much of the player base actually does 10s and above. would be funny if it was only 5%. i know where i am at is less than 1%.

edit: nvm just looked it up its over 10% for people who participate in m+

With the new tier bonus to Shield Charge reset you should have Shield Block up 100% of the time with ease which is massive dmg mitigation. There are addons that keep track of it for you but once you get into the rhythm of big pulls or boss tanking it becomes second nature.

That’s quitter talk

if your shield buff drops there is a good chance you die

Yes, with high enough haste and the proper distro of talents you CAN have 100% uptime on Shield Block and 100% uptime on Ignore Pain.

Thats not even remotely true. Warriors have some of the best passive mitigation in the game.

ok now start charging packs in mythic 10+ no shield block up and tell me how often you get instagibbed

LOL, this reminds me of something that happened just the other day.

In SV 13 moving towards the machinist, warrior charged (not shield charge as he forgot) a pack and got global’d. What was funny is that one of the guys was recording it and posted it in guild discord. Slow-mo gif of him charging in and dying 100-0 in literally a single frame.

We were all laughing too hard to finish the key…

I use Shield Block as needed . . . . which is a lot.

Shield Block does increase Shield Slam damage (if talented, don’t remember), so there is that.

Against spell casters, there is Spell Block, however I believe that gives a chance to block spells, depending on block chance, so Shield Block does contribute to that.

Really depends on your situation and where you are at, etc, etc.

Charging into a pack of mobs without it up . . . Typically not a good idea . . Lol.

It is our bread and butter, so . … . . . …
