Hello fellow Monks! I’m returning to Monk from playing him in WoD. Quite a few things are the same, but there are a lot of things that are different.
I really like the idea of a melee-focused healer. However, I could use some beginner guidance as it does feel a tad overwhelming. I’ve checked out guides, but the class seems complex, and in some ways, I’m not sure what I’m reading.
I tried playing a follower dungeon, but my party members took almost no damage so there was no learning taking place.
I am hoping for an idiot’s overview on:
1.) What I should be focusing on doing to be both effective at dpsing in melee and more importantly healing.
2.) How to navigate the button bloat. I feel like I have many, many more buttons than other healers, and it feels overwhelming.
In the end, it could be this class/spec just isn’t for me, but I’d really like to give it a good try.
General rule of thumb, what i do anyway and have learned from watching some guides, is you wanna keep renewing mist from capping charges, then you wanna hit jadefire stomp to get the buff that makes your melee attacks heal up, then rising sun kick, which will also put a renewing mist for 6 seconds on a nearby player, then tiger palm twice (standing in your jadefire stomp makes ancient teachings of the monestary stack 2 times so you only need to TP twice to reach 4 stacks of the buff) and then blackout kick.
Spinning crane kick on like 3 or more targets.
Use your thunder focus tea on either enveloping mist or rising sun kick.
Other than that just use your CDs wisely.
This is mostly from a PvP perspective, although I did heal a few dungeons lvling from 70-80.
Im new to mistweaver so im not the biggest expert but having a blast on it.

I’ll keep it brief so you don’t get overwhelmed.
Keep your buffs up and punch away, that’s all you do for maintenance healing and dps.
Someone dying? Drink tea and use Enveloping Mist on him.
Someone REALLY dying? Pop Cocoon on him.
Everybody is dying? Pop Chi-ji and keep punching.
Still not enough? Pop Revival.
Can’t punch? Use Sheilun.
Too many skills? Swap all your active skills in your monk talent tree into passive skills.
Know what bosses big aoe is.
If you are doing Conduit of the Celestials then remember you got an extra healing CD and that when you summon yulon she gives a bunch of CDR to some core abilities.
Know your kit and how it interacts with your spells.
Do not always blindly follow guides; treat them as a nice starting place.
Watch streamers and see how they react to high HPS scenarios but remember these people often play with very good players that know how to mitigate damage far better than the randoms you will play with.
For button bloat, help/harm macros are your best bet. I combine the following spells together:
Soothing mist/tiger palm
Enveloping mist/blackout kick
Vivify/Rising sun kick
Renewing Mist/Crackling Jade lightning
For writing the macros, it’s like this:
#showtooltip
/cast [@mouseover,help,nodead] *Spell; [harm, nodead] Spell; same healing spell

To add to this, make sure you accumulate the mists and then waft it over to the booboos

I’m definitely going to try this. Thank you!
using the ingame click casting system can also be pretty useful for reducing keybinds. I generally map all the normal casts to clickcasting, damage abilities to numbers, and cooldowns to letters.
