Hi all, this is the very first time ill be maining or ( attempting to main a ranged class) i have been a melee since i started playing.
With all the changes coming i thought i would give Mage an honest try.
But as i dont know the spec really well and what they aim to do i was wondering if i could get some insight from all of you veterans out there.
I have always played bursty classes, i like the idea of using some cool downs then unleashing my inner pew pew
I was looking at arcane and spell slinger, they look pretty interesting and the animations really look good. ( i was told they are much more mobile too now which is awesome) do you think arcane spell slinger has good burst potential with decent speed ?
Another suggestion was to look at fire mage and sunfury. Do you feel this spec is more inline with bursting and a decent flow of rotation vs arcane spell slinger.
Mind you most of this is PVE focused with very little PvP ( maybe a random battle ground or two, or a random open world encounter nothing serious)
If anyone could give some personal insight it would be extremely helpful, thank you again for your time.

Arcane is a nice gateway spec if you are used to melee, it’s AoE rotation will involve spamming Arcane Explosion and other instant casts in melee range so if you have knowledge of avoiding frontals and swirlies in melee while doing your rotation you will have a leg up. And especially in DF, Arcane has had the burstiest damage profile of the Mage specs.
Sunfury is also available to Arcane, so if that tree provides burst to Fire it should also provide burst to Arcane.

One thing you have to consider is movement. You might get all lined up to do your bursty rotation and then either you have to move or the boss has moved. I’m personally not great with planning around this, but I’m also not concerned about top dps all the time. I enjoy frost lately, but there really isn’t burst.

Very true,
(Also thanks for your input)
Also furijan brings up a good point. How does arcane deal with movment problems, if you begin to do your burst and have to move. Can arcane some how deal with that and be ok or kind of part of being arcane.
Do you think spell slinger will have good burst it looks pretty fun.
Thank you again for your help
Arcane spellslinger is gonna be my jam! I wholeheartedly invite you to play along with me.

The short answer is you learn the fights and dont use your modifiers before a movement phase.
Shimmer also helps, and alter time can be useful.
You can cast while you use shimmer. Some people also keep blink and take icey foes. Alter time can also be helpful. Like during the last boss of AA. The dragon pulls you in at intervals. After you do it enough you know when the pull is coming. Ill hit alter time mid burn phase, when i get pulled in i alter time immediately while still in the air to the boss. I snap back to my original place, facing the boss, and i only lose a global. It takes practice and finesse, but alter time can be helpful.

One way is taking the talent that makes clearcasting arcane missiles able to cast on the move. You can also use instant cast spells like Cone of Cold, Arcane Barrage (though this clears your charges), Nether Tempest, and Shimmer (which allows a mobile cast).
I definitely recommend taking icy floes over shimmer since it can allow you to move around while pressing arcane surge and radiant spark, but I think shimmer can be better in some other situations… but also I think (outside of cases where you can shimmer out of mechanics or needing some micro-movement via icy floes), the choice between either is subjective.
Just try both and see what you like. You mostly need to get used to doing your rotation without thinking.
I don’t know anything specifically with respect to TWW & hero talents, but arcane is certainly quite mobile already compared to most casters and mage specs.
If you wouldnt mind me asking a rotation question, ok so at the start ( im exstremly new to arcane mage, sorry if this is completely wrong)
When i start a fight i start pressing arcane blast to build up my charges. Once i hit four and get some clear casting.
I hit surge but im not quite sure when to hit barrage to empty the charges and rebuild them again. Im studying up on wow head, but it is a tad confusing.
Any chance youd be willing to give a tip or two about that.
Thank you inadvance for your time

It’s kind of a balancing act that depends on your mana bar. If your mana goes below 70%, that’s when I definitely give up fishing for Clearcasting procs. I’ll not lie and claim I’m the best person to ask though. In order to take care of my mana with less stress, I like grabbing the Arcane Orb talents (Arcane Orb, Charged Orb, and Orb Barrage. If you get a good amount of procs off Orb Barrage, you can burn your mana more before casting Arcane Barrage.
Thanks for the idea.
I shelved alter time because I couldn’t find a use to justify having it on my keybinds.
