New Scourge Lore

After having a look at the remastered undead in Warcraft: Reforged and seeing the Maldraxxian(?) in Shadowlands’ content preview it’s occurred to me that the nature of scourge structures has been retconned/changed.

Originally, according to the Warcraft 3 game manual (remember those old things, I miss those), the undead summoned their buildings pre-constructed from the Twisting Nether to house and summon their undead minions, presumably constructed by demonic slaves in the Nether, now with the new Shadowlands lore I guess it’s been retroactively changed that the undead drew their structures directly from the Maldraxxian realm in the shadow lands which is honestly kinda weird…

UNLESS the reason the Maldraxxis area is full of scourge-like structures and entities is because Maldraxxis is where the servants of the lich king all went after they died properly and they just renovated it to feel more homey.

I really hope this doesn’t inadvertently retcon the Lich King’s appreciation for the might of the Nerubians because originally he based the architecture of his fortresses after the Nerubians’ out of respect for them after the War of the Spider.

Am I wrong but isn’t the Twisting Nether a changed concept too?

They expanded the cosmology later on and that sort of changed itself.

The Twisting Nether used to be both “space” as well as the realm where demons dwelled back in War3 the only real major change is that they seperated the concepts making “space” actual space in the form of the “Great Dark”.

Even with the changes the original War3 scourge lore held up.

It’s not necessarily a retcon. The Scourge actively borrows from existing cultures instead of designing their own things (one of the books in the DK starter zone says as much). Since the Dreadlords are apparently aware of the Shadowlands and were involved in the early Scourge, it could be that the Scourge buildings were designed after Maldraxxis.

Chromie did it, she broke it.

I’m using this for any and all retcons and things that don’t make sense.

Maldraxxus is the zone but the inhabitants are called the Necrolords
