New Quest Icons

Sorry. I’m sure this question has been asked, but I can’t see it.

The questgivers sometimes have different icons, with variations on the exclamation point. I was in Nazjatar and saw a quest giver with an exclamation point, but with a brown background on it. Like the exclamation point was on a five-sided shield.

Then there is another one, with sort of an icon around it, like wings, almost.

And for that matter – although I noticed this in the past, I never worried about it – some of the explanation points on the map are on a blue circle, some are on a brown circle, and some have no circle at all.

Can someone explain the differences?

So, the ones you see on a world map inside a brown or blue circle are world quests. These are a bit like dailies, but they run on different timers. (You should see how long the quest will be up for when you mouse over it.) You don’t actually pick these quest up, you’ll see progress for the objective when you enter the area. Sometimes these will have a fancier border around them. That indicates they are more difficult and intended for groups.

The icons with the shield on them mark main campaign quests. They added it so it was easier to tell what you needed to actually progress and what is an optional side quest. The golden one with wings marks legendary quests.

Thank you very much for explaining. So, the only difference between the brown and blue circles are the timers. And the ones on the brown shield are main campaign quests, the ones you need to do to progress.

The only thing I’m not clear on is what makes a quest “legendary”?

The difference between the blue and brown circles is generally reward quality. The blue circles are basically “rare” quests with slightly better rewards.

Legendary quests are ones that involve legendary items. (These quests previously had their own unique orange color for the exclamation point, but this makes them stand out a bit more.) I haven’t been playing much, but I think that this is also used for stuff like the Legion artifact quests, which aren’t technically legendaries, but pretty much in the same vein.
