New prot 12.1 PTR

Protection

  • Developers’ notes: With these changes we’re intending to reduce the opportunity cost associated with taking Sentinel and broadening the suite of defensive talent options. We’re also transferring some power out of strong cooldown windows and into baseline throughput, with the goal of reducing associated threat pain points and improving the feel of combat outside of cooldowns.

  • New Talent: Blessed Word – Word of Glory can no longer critically strike, but its healing is increased by your critical strike chance and 80% of its overhealing done to you instead shrouds you in Light, granting an absorb shield.

  • Improved Ardent Defender has been redesigned – Now increases maximum HP by 20% while active and no longer cancels remaining duration if fatal damage is sustained.

  • Seal of Reprisal has been redesigned – Blessed Hammer reduces enemy damage dealt to you by 10% for 8 seconds.

  • Masterwork has been updated – After casting a Holy Armament, your next 3 casts of Hammer of the Righteous/Blessed Hammer/Crusader Strike bestow a Lesser Armament of the same kind on a nearby ally.

  • Judgment damage increased by 100%.

  • Consecration damage increased by 100%.

  • Shield of the Righteous damage increased by 150%.

  • Hammer of the Righteous primary damage increased by 50%.

  • Avenging Wrath increases damage and healing done by 10%, and critical strike by 10%.

  • Avenger’s Shield damage increased by 30%.

  • Lesser Weapon damage increased by 50%.

  • Hammer of Light damage reduced by 33%.

  • Empyrean Hammer damage reduced by 33%.

  • Divine Exaction’s Divine Toll effectiveness reduced to 80% (was 150%).

  • Sentinel duration increased to 20 seconds.

  • Undying Embers heals you for 125% of damage dealt by Refining Fire (was 100%).

  • Bulwark of Order absorb increased to 75% of Avenger’s Shield damage (was 60%).

  • Solace causes Consecration to heal you for 375% of damage it deals (was 300%).

  • Sacred Weapon and Holy Bulwark extend their duration when reapplied by the same caster.

  • Glory of the Vanguard now deals damage as a percentage of Avenger’s Shield’s initial damage.

  • Sentinel has been moved, and now inherits Avenging Wrath’s critical strike bonus.

  • Sanctified Wrath has been removed.

LIKE WUT O.O

The WoG absorb shield would be great, the problem I have for it is that, the shield wont be that big, It be great in raids but in mythic plus, it won’t really help as much.

What I wanted was our mastery to scale better. If I could get up to 50% chance to block I would think it would smooth our damage intake a bit. :frowning:

Yeah they buffed the hell outta prot and crapped on ret by nerfing wings/art. Not sure how the spec is gonna play.

Really? So my guessing this is gonna help prot paladins BIG time for high mythic keys?

One thing in the Ret changes that just baffles me is changing Hammer of Light to cost 3 holy power (with a nerft to its dmg to compensate)

…But why? It being a 5 cost spender makes it unique - we already have 3 cost spenders.

What is this change supposed to accomplish?

yall this is a prot thread. we shouldnt hijack it for ret.

I mean, it’s really just so it’s not a complete waste when you’re full health and have a charge of free WoG and you want to use it so you don’t waste these.

It’s been asked here for a while now.

The crit change is elegant, it’s makes it more reliable and predictable which is thematic for a tank and fits in with this way Prot has been built this time around of leaning into crit.

I’m very pleased with the improvements and the direction, the reworking of prot was always going to be a multi-patch process in my mind at least.

Better but still stupid that you start swinging it before pulling to generate HP and now this buff.

Each time I think about that I picture a group around the fire discussing their strategy and then there’s the paladin hanging in the back with a dumb look on his face just swinging at nothing generating his hammers with no one around yelling at everyone he’s preparing his holy power for the pull…

But that’s a me thing…

Absolute fire

Last remnant of that playstyle is gone.
Bitter sweet feelings, it was some form of skill expression after all but I loathed the CDR/CD extension identity Prot was given since DF.

With this the last ember of this philosophy dies.

Removing our heavy hitting spells, and transferring those to our general spells so we ‘‘do something’’ when wings is down.

That is, you can take fatal damage as many times as you want while the buff is active, without dying ?

I believe as written you still get only one instance of a “cheat death” - but it doesn’t cancel the remaining duration

I think the wog change is going to be pretty amazing. The number of times I wog right as the healer pops a CD on me…at least it’s not completely wasted now.

This is a great change. If I understand it it means you can wings without worrying about overriding the weapon buff which would be great.

I am happy this is happening. The damage loss taking sent was kind of ridiculous.

I still think solace should make a shield. I just don’t see the point of trickle heals on prot pally.

Overall these changes look awesome. Maybe I’ll go back to my prot pally again. I miss it so.

The one wish list thing I would still like to see is increasing the charges of hotr. Please please. With how important HP is there is literally no situation you would run hotr. It’s been years of it being trashcan. Please add the charge.

Yea it would be nice if all the trickle heals were at least trickle shields.

I know things should (hopefully) feel different but i havent played with a healer yet who thought lack of trickle self healing was what was making Prot feel bad to heal.

Great changes!

Brings Templar for Ret more in-line with Prot since Prot’s version costs 3 HoPo and is/was doing just as much damage as Ret’s Hammer of Light. Makes sense to make it 3 HoPo if both specs got hit by the nerf hammer for the same ability.

Only inherits 10% crit last I checked, not 20%. It’s a tradeoff for the damage reduction Sentinel gives.

Sanctified Wrath wasn’t that bad for Prot. The real issue was Zealot’s Paragon because it is a CD extension. I’m all for CDR because a lot of our abilities come off cooldown after a much longer period of time than most classes in the game (being 45s-1.5 min) unless we’re in AoE for Gift of the Golden Val’kyr. And then there’s Righteous Protector… CDR and Less duration.

Same. Solace doesn’t heal for a lot unless you’re running a bunch of Consecration damage modifiers and that makes the spec unfun and tied to Consecration again, which is a major issue for most players.

prot HoL hits way harder than Ret’s in PvP that is and thats a big sad :frowning:
