New player confused by different leatherworking

Hello -

I got my leatherworking up to 185ish, but when I started the next expansion it reset to 1 of 75. Now it reset again at lvl 1 "cataclysm".

Is the 185 I earned in vanilla lost forever? Should I stop upgrading leatherworking since it keeps resetting? What is the final chapter of leatherworking?

Basically I am just really confused as to what I should be doing as it keeps resetting when my character levels up and starts new areas.

Could someone explain what is going on and make any recommendations?

Thanks so much for your time.
Each expansion has its own levels thus making it easier to wait to pick up professions until whatever level you chose to. For example I see zero reason to have a profession during the leveling process so now I can wait and just learn the current end game profession recipes without have to start with old content recipes and grind it all up.
In truth it is an excellent quality of life move though it screwed all those who used to sell profession leveling packs to those who used to wait to end game to level professions
If you look at your actual Leather working skills, you'll see they're divided up by the various expansions. You didn't lose any of your Vanilla skill points, and any recipes you learned will still be listed on your tab. The "final chapter" for professions right now is Battle for Azeroth, but I think they're called Kul Tiran skills for allies and Zandalari for horde. You can click the "unlearned" tab to see what skills you haven't learned in each expansion.

Personally, I hate the changes Blizzard made to professions this expansion, and the dividing up of the skills is one of the things I hate the most. No longer can I get the extra points from the Darkmoon Faire or city dailies (once your skills pass the 300 mark, you don't get any more points from those sources).

I guess I should add that you can go back to the old areas to acquire more points for those expansions (if you haven't already maxed them out). For a Leather Worker, you just have to make enough of the items from those expansions, so as long as you have the necessary materials, you don't have to "go back". However, I've been finding it hard to locate trainers for the recipes. You used to be able to get basic recipes for your level of skill from any trainer, but now the trainers seem to be expansion specific as well.

blizards fault for not explaining it better.

it use to be 1-850 or so.

so to learn "current" xpac stuff you had to lvl it up all that. It was time and money/mat consuming to do.

So they broke it up.
1-300 for vanilla (as thats how it was then)
and each Xpacs was listed as a sperate thing.

This makes it better in that ppl are NOT requried to lvl old content if they do not want to.

If you start game today you cna pick up LW/tailoring/etc and go straight to lvling the current xpacs .

was it needed? no.
was it helpful? yes.

Also be warned the DMF's +5 profession atm only efefcts the base 1-300. wont lvl the other ones.
Thank you so much everyone, I understand how this works a lot better now. Much appreciated!

I too am finding it hard to find Vanilla recipies. I dropped my leatherworking on a rogue not knowing that I would ever have to go back to learn early leatherworking again for new characters. But…I unlocked Kul’ Tirans and Void Elves and have new toons. Now I need some of those old Vanilla leatherworking recipes and have looked everywhere, even looking for leatherworking quests. Can’t find many of them that I need to level up. Thanks Blizz.
