New Player confused about how WoW Tokens work

I have subscribed for my first month of gameplay and have saved enough to buy a token before the month ends, and was wondering if the WoW Token needs to be bought from the auction before my monthly subscription passes, or is there a way to buy a WoW Token even after your account is no longer subscribed? I wanted to not waste any days on my next subscription so I’ll subscribe once I’m next free again instead of wasting a few days when I’m busy.

In case it is indeed possible to buy it after expiry and while not logged in, should I should keep my gold on my character or in my bank?

Does the WoW Token grant you the same privileges as the regular subscription, or can you only play with that one character that you used to buy the subscription with gold, or after buying can I use all my available characters? I don’t wanna waste all that gold only to find out I can’t even play my other classes and just one character.

Wow tolken can only be used while logged into game so cant use without active sub

If you’ve run out of Game Time but you have a Token in a character’s inventory, you’ll be able to use the WoW Token from the character select screen and add Game Time to any WoW game account on your Battle.net Account. If your Game Time has expired, you can purchase and consume a WoW Token directly from the character select screen. Each character on the selected realm will contribute gold to the price of buying the WoW Token, including gold in characters’ mailboxes.

So I have to buy it before my subscription expires? It means I’ll have to waste a few days if I’m busy?

Also, since it can only be used in-game, Does it get used immediately as your subscription expires, or do you have to use it yourself before your subscription expires?

Why would that waste any days? If you paid for sub, you have an “end” date. If you have the token available, it will take over as your sub on the next day. You’ll have to keep farming gold to buy a token in advance from then on as well, since you won’t be using a card of any kind.

You won’t “waste” any days, they always add stuff to the end of your current time. My sub date has changed multiple times over the years using both the 6 month sub, but also being awarded time from buying expansions, which gives you a “free” month. I used to be set for January and July, but now I think I’m at May and November from all the shifts.

By wasting days, I meant that if the token gets used immediately as my subscription expires, but I’m busy doing stuff and can’t really login for like 3 days after it automatically renews, then I consider those 3 days to be wasted. So like does it auto-consume even tho I’m not logging in, or only when I attempt to login again?

Just saw now mb. Thanks for linking that and still answering too

Yes, if you have a Token, you can let your time expire, and then use the Token from the login screen whenever you come back.

It is also true that

  • if your Game Time has run out
    AND
  • you have no Token
    BUT
  • you have enough gold on characters on one realm to buy a Token

then the login screen will ask if you want to use that gold to buy a Token and use it.

So even if you didn’t buy a Token before your gametime expired, you can use your gold as a Token.

But beware that the gold price of the Token goes up and down. It’s pretty down right now, but it will rise again. So a Token today is about 200K gold, but if you have 210K gold and you wait a few weeks, the price might be 220K, and your 210K gold would not be enough. So it’s alwats safer to buy a Token before your gametime expires.

If your sub expires but you have the token in your bags, it will consume the token the next time you log in, not immediately upon the end of your previous time.

I have been unsubbed since December (needed a break) but am thinking about trying out the new xpack. I have plenty of gold and was wondering if I could buy a token without resubbing first. Now I know I can.

Welcome back!

Just don’t forget that buying gametime won’t get you into the new expac. You’ll need three(?) or so more Tokens to buy that.

Wait, you mean that I can also unlock expacs using Tokens? Would you be free to explain how I could go about doing that and if buying expac also includes Game Time or do I have to buy Game Time using the Token, and then buy the expac using more Tokens?

What you can buy using Tokens is Blizzard Balance.

You can think of Blizzard Balance like “store credit”. It is money that you can use to buy anything in the Blizzard Store - not just WoW gametime and expansions, but pets, mounts, services, and any other Blizzard game. Anything in the Shop here:

When you right-click a Token in your bag, you get a choice of whether you want to use it for 30 days of gametime or $15 Blizzard Balance.

If you click on your BattleTag at the top right of this page, the dropdown will include Account Settings. When you go into that, your Blizzard Balance will show top right.

When you try to buy something from the Shop, you will be given the option of applying your Blizard Balance against the purchase instead of money.

Buying an expac includes Game Time ONLY IF the expac offer itself includes Game Time.

If you look at The War Within, only the Epic Edition includes gametime with the purchase

so if you are buying Basic or Heroic, you will have to pay for game time separately.

Here is a longer article covering what the Token can do for Battlenet Balance:

It’s important to note that when buying something with battle.net balance, the balance needs to cover the whole purchase, including tax. You can’t pay for part of it with balance and the rest with a credit card.

Just be aware that currently, gold in the Warbank can not be used to buy tokens

Make sure it’s on characters’ inventories if you’re taking a break and thinking of buying a token later.

So if my wife let her time run out and doesn’t have enough gold to buy a token from the login screen, can I mail her the gold she needs, and it count even if her sub is up?

No. Don’t do that!

The gold does not count as being in her inventory until she has taken it out of the mail, so she will not be able to use it.

She could make a support ticket explaining that you will mail her the gold when she is able to log in, and ask for 24 hours of time to receive the gold and buy the Token. I’ve heard of that working, but it will very depend on what current Customer Service policy says.

It may be possible for you to gift her game time from the shop, but now that gametime comes in 60-day chunks, I’m not sure you could give less. If you trade in your gold for Tokens, and use those to buy enough Blizzard Balance for a 60-day gametime code, you should be able to gift that to your wife in the Shop. It probably won’t be a great deal but it should work. Just be sure you are buying it as a gift, not to be applied to your own account.

While I appreciate the helpfulness, this is incorrect information.

I dug around the limitations/restrictions page and it does state in-game mail is counted.

I sent her 40k to test and it does work.

As an edit: She spoke to what we call a “GM” now(they are not what they used to be by any stretch of the imagination) and he could not even answer the question. He couldn’t even point her in a correct direction.

Only pointing this out as it has become a common theme when trying to get help nowadays, and it’s very sad.

Well, I am sorry that I misinformed you. I had come across a similar case before, and was quite sure it didn’t work. I am surprised, but happy it worked for you.

When I look it up now

I do see

Gold in the mailbox also contributes.

Perhaps they had this situation before, and added that facility.

Anyhow, thanks for telling us! That may be useful for someone else in future. :+1:

It literally pulls all money from mail, she had auctions that sold, and it utilized that gold as well.
All a learning experience as I’ve not messed with it before, but we thought why not?

Thanks for the help though! Hope it helps others in the future!
