New person to wow

Yeah, my Ex-SO did something similar. I found that ‘helping’ by doing literally everything for them and falling into my ‘we need to go do this now’ habits for efficiency was detrimental towards their enjoyment. When I took a step back and let them do things their way, only offering encouragement when they do something they’re proud of and answering questions when they ask me really helped them to gain an appreciation for the scale of the game and that they could do just about anything they wanted.

IDK what kind of person your bf is, but telling him he has to do X, X, and then a 4 hour quest to get X will probably sour his mood to the whole experience. It’s honestly a difficult time for getting into WoW and I’m not sure if the level squish will help much, but everyone starting over at the same time should help him feel less overwhelmed.

Best of luck, I hope others have better suggestions than ‘try not to help him’.

Do you know what heart lvl he has to be to do the last magno upgrade quest?

Out of curiosity, what mmo has better dungeons? Please don’t say FFXIV (though that game certainly has very fun boss fights, feels like beautiful choreography at times) as while they’re prettier still have the trash problem (I think these 2 games have the best mmo dungeons though)

Stop focusing on ilvl and enjoy the game. I’d recommend going back and starting from level 1 again, it’s not complicated, fun and he will understand the game better.

No no, Magni upgrades his heart to… 50? It might be higher now. So any AP he’s grinding right now is pretty much worthless.

BEST BEST BEST way to approach your SO’s into any new game!!! Do NOT take over and select things for them, this doesn’t just go for WoW, it goes for any game ever made.

@OP You think your helping your bf but your really not, he might even quit if you continue. it’s like putting someone who’s never driven into the driver’s seat, giving him a explanation of wheel, gas pedal, break, shift, and then expecting them to follow up on what you said and just love it. It’s going to overcomplicate their head and make them stop.

The best thing you can currently do right now OP, is make a FRESH character with him or use party sync with your character and he makes a new toon and you quest/do dungeons as HE wishes - not you. Go with whatever he feels like and inspire him like Cailinn said! Let him make decisions, not you.

I think that it’s reasonable to not enjoy dungeons if you are a 2** ilvl in an M0. He is likely dying to things left and right, while simultaneously watching your teammates kill the mobs with ease. I think that you should consider leveling a new character with him, and ideally, he would play a DPS spec as a new player. I hope this helps!

So as others have stated, online guides are a great place to get a basic understanding for all warrior specs. However, since you want advice from players:

Protection:
Main stats = Haste/Vers
Traits:
1x Deafening Crash - Basically required
3x Bastion of Might
Can stack extra Deafening Crash past this for extra thunder clap damage, but nothing else will really be that big of a boost for prot.

Fury:
Main stats = Crit/haste

Traits:
3x Cold Steel, Hot Blood
1x Unbridled Ferocity
Then try to squeeze in a Simmering Rage or Reckless flurry as one-of traits, these are just not as strong as Unbridled Ferocity so I would not consider them a necessity.

Arms
Main stat = Haste
This is the only stat that heavily benefits arms at a higher level of play because of the way that it works with its traits.
Traits:
3x Test of Might
There is really no other trait worth mentioning for Arms, as this is the only one that should be sought after for PvE content.

Hmm so there’s no ilvl req for the quest?

You should be a reasonable ilvl, because your gonna get 1 shot by the naga mobs. Also read my post, 2 posts above this one, if you don’t want to have him end up quitting.

Yes FF14. The dungeons are about the boss fights and not about a trash fest time sink.

If M+ dungeons focused more on making the boss fights harder and not forcing you to kill most of the trash then they would be so much more fun.

Trash in 14 dungeons is no where hear the level if WoW. You can pull all of the trash up to the stopping point, kill it, then fight a boss. Some of the older dungeons that came out in 2.0 have more trash but they have moved away from that in the newer xpacs. WoW feels like they have added more trash.

Dungeons in FF14 flow far better from start to finish.
Dungeons in WoW just feel like a slow grind of killing packs of mobs till you get to the first boss which dies 10 times faster than it tool to deal with trash up to it.

Also I understand what you’re saying here, but honestly it wasn’t me who put him into this position it was him. He was the one telling me to do all this stuff for him and explain things, I’d rather have him learn on his own. I think it’s the best way, it’s how I learned

Doesn’t need that much imo.

For a warlock I 120’d but then dropped play I didn’t spend much money.

Had this strange desire to play them last night. Lots of crap items in slots. But some vendor items from kurrock event vendor. For some of the crap slots I just got decent gear (300 ilevel and there abouts) at say no more than 500 gold per piece.

Fixes ilevel to work the open wq stuff to get better drops. Rinse lather repeat till better. So this could be the cheaper option to get to dungeon ready maybe.

Yeah its a bit longer working the ilevel cutoff scales for loot table but it saves gold. PIck your poison here I guess.

In my case this was easy though. I had dreadmist gear on her for the xp boost to run korrack. So even cheap 300 ish pants were better than the dreadmist pants. They weren’t upgraded. SO like a ilevel 180. Anything better than really lol.

side note of yes…I saw I wasn’t upgraded and wondered why. Horde had fun in the event. Even not well geared the wins came in to rush this really.

He’s going to have to do the main quests at least, to get his cloak. You have to get to Nazjatar in order to get the cloak and to do that, you have to quest.

Also, while questing may be boring to you it may not be to him. He’s a new player so he might really get into the story.
You can always give him some time to play by himself, get his main quests out of the way and once he’s opened Naz, gotten his cloak, then you two can smash out the gear.

Til then, I suggest WQ’s, Warfronts, Islands, Nazjatar if needed. It goes pretty fast.

  • Thought of something else. You could go to Naz, get some benthics and mail them to him.
At least I think you can. It’s been awhile since I’ve done it.

Nope, you just unlock your world quests, Nathanos will then give you another quest to go talk to the Island Expedition npc who will sail you to Nazjatar. You do the little intro there, arrive to Newhome, open a portal back to Dazar’alor… Magni pops up and takes you back to the heart chamber where you’ll do a quest to open the heart forge.

This does mean doing the scenario with Ebonhorn (highmountain dragon) that you can not join him inside. If he’s trying to attempt this at anything less than 360-375 range… he’s going to get absolutely wrecked. :frowning: It’s honestly pretty difficult at even 385 (mailing benthics to yourself).

(Edit: sorry Sinelius… I misclicked a quote on you. :frowning:)

Tyrannical weeks make trash trivial and the boss fights harder.

People prefer Fortified weeks, so it’s no clear people really prefer boss fights.

Hmmm, you know your bf can come in and ask himself would be better.

if he has a mushroom haircut, have him go arms

if he has a soul patch, have him go fury

if he doesnt meet either qualification, have him reroll shaman

Explaining things for him is different from doing things for him. Explaining things so he understands and then letting him make the decision works well with some people.

Yes but he also asked me to get him higher ivl

He doesn’t know how to use the forums

Am I weird that I prefer tyrannical ?
