New PCs only have WIFI

The shop where people buy most of their computers and computer related accessories in my area is only selling computers that use WIFI. Is that a good thing? What was wrong with the ethernet cable of old? Articles online all say that wifi is less reliable, so why force it on us?

Seems strange. All of the off-shelf motherboards have ethernet still and mostly are considered a feature for high-performance gaming/usage.

I know lower end laptops and all in one desktops have started to remove the Ethernet connection but even basic small towers from Dell, HP, Acer, etc., still offer an ethernet port. Do you mean more desktop computers now offer built in wifi along with an Ethernet port?

Good question. I’m shopping on this website : ww.canadacomputers

All the descriptions of their computers only state wifi, no mention of ethernet at all. But it wouldn’t surprise me if it was still built in. I mean it’s so basic any computer should have it. I noticed they sell a lot of open box, so maybe I’m not the first one who wants to make sure before buying.

I hear ya, so when they state something like “Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Windows 11 Home” they are just marketing the fact the PC has built in wifi. While their specs page are hardly the most informative, I think you can rest easy that all those desktop tower PCs come with an Ethernet Port.

edit: a few of them do list the Ethernet Port in their specs page. It seems the site is rather inconsistent in their specs detail page.

Just looking at one of their top models, they don’t list ethernet.

They don’t list the number of USB ports either. You could always email them and ask for a photo of the rear IO panel to see what kind of stuff you’re getting. Likely is as Lilybug stated, it’s in there but isn’t marketable to advertise like Wifi. Perhaps its just a “given” that they have NICs.

It’s half azz info provided from the manufacturer (three total pics, really?) and the online seller doesn’t have the staff to do internal product shots. Some of the other PCs offer better product shots and info.

Another reason to roll your own.

You’ll know exactly what’s in there.

I don’t want to assume anything but its a safe bet that a company as reputable as Canada Computers wouldn’t order custom motherboards without ethernet for some reason. It is pretty safe to assume that they are using off the shelf parts or at the very least cheap oem boards that have at least 1GB realtek ethernet.

Personally, i would try to go for both unless there’s something else i want in that PCIxE 1 slot.

But in a situation where i don’t have Ethernet cables or the wifi card does a much better job, then yes, it’s good.

Oh yea, not selling it, is not a good thing in my personal opinion. Like at least have that as an option.

I’m guessing they left it out since most computer parts can be ordered online these days.

Eeeeeyup. I agree. :+1:
