Im looking to update my pc to improve dragonflight play. Mainly seeing 30-40fps in Val and raids on max settings no ray tracing. I play on a Samsung 49” UW 5120x1440p. I’m going to use a 7800x3d, but I’m debating on moving to a new gpu from my ftw3080 I have now. Is a 4070 even worth it or just keep the 3080 for now.
TIA
I assume the bottleneck is the gpu? If that is the case then you might as well get a 4090 or whatever the other upgrade was.
everything I’ve seen is that a 4070 won’t be that noticeable over a 3080.
If you are going to upgrade the 3080 and notice an improvement, it’s at least a 4080, but it’s probably better to wait until the 50 series comes out, which is probably some time next year.
WoW is not a graphically complex game. It doesnt need a top end graphics card and PC to run well. If you are having low FPS on a 3080, it is most likely not the card that is causing problems. 3070’s can Run WoW at max settings with no issues. You could have the best graphics card on the market, but if you have a low quality motherboard, processor, power supply, ram, cooling, and yes internet, you will have issues. Depending on the level of internet you have available in your area, or what region you live in vs. what region you play on, may have the greater effect on your performance, than building a whole new rig.
I am not any sort of expert or authority on the matter. But the one thing I do know, is that WoW doesnt need a state of the art PC to run at peak performance. So I just suggest, that you really explore all options, before spending a lot of money.
Now if you are looking to build a PC for the next generation of games, and like playing all the newest game releases, at max settings, and you have the money to spend on it, then by all means. Build the best PC you can and have the best time you can.
Wait for 4080Ti, then upgrade.
My advice is to check userbenchmark, awesome free website that helped me this last year a TON. RTX 3080 performs at 187% standard and 4070 TI at 240%, so the difference is not huge. I have the 4070 TI and get about 60-80 fps in Valdrakken for what it’s worth (maybe related to my low pop server more than anything). The best GPU is 4090 apparently, it performs at 371% on average.
I got a rtx 3070.
It’s more than fine for 1080p gaming.
I don’t think I’m going to bother with upgrading for awhile.
For wow? You don’t need that at all… CPU is more important then GPU in this game.
I get 51-58fps at 4k with all setting at max, including ray tracing, in Valdrakken on a 3070ti. So you problem is likely elsewhere. Or maybe your GPU is about to die.
Why not both? and run SLI. Even with the newer Nvidia cards, it’s still possible. I have an old 2070 super and have no issues running max settings and ray tracing. Your 3080 shouldn’t have any problems either. What is your cpu? How much ram do you have? Those play a part as well. Also, what kind of hard drive are you using? With today’s WoW, the old ssds aren’t fast enough. A Nvme drive is the way to go.
Get a 4090.
My 3060 Ti benchmarks better than a 4060, but a 4060 Ti benchmarks better than my 3060 Ti but about 15%… for $600.
Gotta weight up the benefits vs the cost, for me it’s not worth upgrading unless I got 4080 or something.
I see a lot of people saying “WoW is not a graphically complex game” or “You don’t need a top-end card for WoW” or “It runs fine for me”, but I’d be willing to bet those people are playing at 1080p and not 4K.
HD is typically 1920x1080p which is about 2M pixels.
UHD is typically 3840x2160p which is about 8M pixels and is exactly four times the HD pixel count and is referred to as 4K.
Your display is 5220x1440 = 7.5M pixels and is 3.625 times the HD pixel count.
All those saying “You don’t need a top-end card for WoW” and who are playing at 1080p are potentially offering bad advice. In a capital city or densely populated raid, your card will be burdened with rendering all the player transmogs that come into range and until they’re cached (assuming they all fit in the GPU’s cache) you’re going to have reduced frame rates. That will be less noticeable with the higher end GPUs that can render faster and have bigger on-board cache memory sizes.
Until you upgrade your GPU, try reducing your display resolution in WoW and/or make sure your render scale is not above 100%.
@Rita gave the best advice imo… Go check your current benchmark and the % improvement for the various GPU upgrades you’re considering.
Also, there are interactions between players with combat actions (raid) and chatter (in capital cities) that rely on the quality of your Internet connection. While the GPU may be your bottleneck, you should be sure to check that your ISP and path to the game server you play on isn’t the issue. Your ping should ideally be less than 50 msec for large raid groups. Maybe even do a ping test in a console window to verify your packet loss is zero (or very low) over a one-minute test period. This is especially important to check if your lag is persistent throughout an entire raid (i.e., after the transmogs all would have been cached and the GPU burden is just reduced to combat VFX rendering).
Everyone says that about WoW but then you see tested builds and they need the top tier cpu/gpu to keep up in Val and other areas. I’ve got an 850w gold psu, low latency ram, higher end asus mb, and 1.4G down internet. At like 15ms home/20ms world latency so that should be good. I think over the years WoW, while not as insane as modern games, still needs at least a lot of processor. The only review I’ve seen that could pull 80fps plus average in Val was a 7800X3D and 4090. Idc about all that but just want to see 60fps!
That’s sort of what I’m thinking. Either do a 7900xtx or wait for 5 series. Thanks!
3080 feels like it just came out and people are already saying its like a dinosaur i mean it runs most modern and upcoming games just fine
most specs i see for games are still recommended 2070s
Roger that, I’ll just upgrade the mb/ram/proc for now.
Yeah that’s why I will upgrade that, just wondered if a 4070 was any good. I like how little power it uses but ain’t worth it just for that lol.
What cpu are you using? I’m on a very well used 10700k. Time for an upgrade to the cpu either way but good to know the 3080 should be good!
I’m on a 10700k that’s been run a lot for a long time haha. 32g vengeance ram, never come close to using that while playing so that should be ok. I was on a cheaper WD m2 so I picked up a Samsung 980pro m2 but that didn’t help.
