Probably a dumb question but what do y’all use to tag mobs quickly? A curse?
Usually agony or corruption, If you are not afflic, yeah, I would use a curse.
I may be wrong but curses don’t tag mobs, nor do DoT ticks.
It has to be direct damage. Fortunately corruption has an instant damage effect too.
For Destro I use Conflagrate or RoF if I have the embers.
I don’t play Demo but I’d probably sac 2 imps for 2 instant cast Demon Bolts if I was racing to tag something, assuming you’re playing with the passive imp summon talent.
Dots tag mobs I use agony for shards.
For sniping I’ll use curses, otherwise I’ll send in the Wrathguard with a Shadow Bolt, or sometimes I’ll just “Release the Hounds!”.

I use the talent Inner Demons which passively summons up to 2 imps , then if I need to tag something quick I can use implosion, which is an instant cast.
Downside is you have to wait 12 seconds until it passively summons another imp for you to do it again. Or as Galedron said, use Power Siphon and now you have 2 instant shots of Demonbolt.
Curses definitely tag. I use Weakness/Tongues to gather mobs up quickly for a mass Cataclysm.
