I just started a Dwarf Hunter and am not sure what pet to get. Bear for heavy tanking, cat for damage or wolf for the in between? Can an experienced Hunter please help.

You need to train a lot of different pets to get different abilities. Once you learn those you will use different pets depending on what type of content you are doing. A good start is a tank pet like a bear and dps pet like a cat. You also want a boar to learn charge.
Cats in the game are arguably the best, with the best damage output/attack speed. While leveling, coupled with beast-mastery talents, the cat is incredibly viable.
Of course, it’s ultimately up to you what you prefer. It’s better to get a cat and tame multiple pets to train their skills up along the way.

Doroteo is correct, the cat is tops for leveling. BM talents + pet talents make the cat capable of tanking 2-3 mobs just fine, plus you’re killing faster.
one of the best utility pets for leveling is the boar.
They will charge in on command to attack for immediate threat and have moderately good hp and armor to hang onto it. You can also teach your boar Bite which is a very focus balanced attack.
There is a really cool looking boar in RFK that has armor both in Orange and in Black.
If you would like a different pet, cat’s are great glass cannons, Wolves are generally balanced all round like the boar minus charge, Birds are decent tanks as well, etc.
But i am biased towards boards for solo content 
Edit: The boar is NOT the top DPS, but he is fully capable of holding onto 3 mobs of equal level if you can be smart about your tab targeting and i rarely have to heal him creating little downtime

cat is your only option IMO, just focus on that and then stable your main cat (either the rake or brokentooth) to tame a new cat to learn abilities, drop that cat, teach to your main cat. don’t even worry about other pets until 60.
at mid 50s up to 60 you can tame a bloodaxe wolf from LBRS to get the max rank of howl which is a party wide attack buff, this will be your main pet for running 5 mans and to bring to raids. you can still take the cat to 5 mans if you want but it’s just easier to bring the wolf which can buff people. in raids your wolf will just sit around doing buffs to your party since pets are useless in raids and die all the time because this game was never well designed for Hunters.

Owl, Buzzard or Bat. Screech lowers attack power and have 2-3 have landed you can even multi shot a group without pulling threat.
boar is a PvP pet only, it doesn’t do anything impressive in PvE. cats hold aggro better due to their attack speed and every pet learns growl anyway, aggro shouldn’t be a problem. you will be killing mobs down so fast anyway that your pet’s HP/armor is meaningless while leveling.
boar should only be used if you anticipate certain things in PvP, otherwise also just use cats in PvP. there’s almost no reason to use anything but a cat in this game except for bringing a wolf to group content.

ill give my cat another try but at lower levels he was quite disappointing and all the guides i raid said boar till mid 30s.
Cat is really the punk pet.
