New Expansion Feature: Customizable Mounts

I’ve recently gotten hooked on the popular idea of the next expansion possibly being dragon based and taking place on the Dragon Isles, and that got me thinking of a neat feature that could be part of that. What if they took the Artifact Weapon system, and turned it into a mount?

Here’s the breakdown: you start off the expansion with an intro quest line that rewards you with a dragon mount at the end of it. Unlike the Artifact Weapons, this isn’t necessarily the only mount you can use in the expansion, but there could be a number of features exclusive to the mount that encourage you to use it over your other ones (but without making the features too good, to the point where players feel forced to use it). This mount could act as one of your main companions throughout the Dragon Isles, maybe give it dialogue like the Monk mount from Legion.

Now comes the next, and arguably most important part of this feature, also stealing from the Artifact Weapon idea: customization. As you play through the expansion, you can unlock different skins amd other customization options for your mount, exactly like you could earn skins for the Artifact Weapons: through dungeons, quests, raids, PvP, exploration, the works. This would allow players the ability to still gain unique vanity items and show off your hard work in the form of what your mount looks like. This could also be a great way to bring back the Mage Tower from Legion, which I know a lot of people have been requesting. Have certain skins be locked behind the Tower, and that gives players the incentive.

What I think is the best part of this idea is having an expansion “system”, like the Artifact Weapons or the Heart of Azeroth/Azerite Armor, that is NOT tied to player power. You don’t have to look up a guide on which weapon to use, or which armor to wear, or in this case, which mount skin to use, in order to min max your DPS in PvE and PvP. The entire system would be based on cosmetics; maybe you could even further incentivize gathering skins by having transmogs, titles, or pets locked behind some skins as a further reward, as well as some additional features of the mount like I mentioned earlier. All of this would allow a central system to still be present in the expansion, but having it only be cosmetic would mean players won’t feel forced to catch up on it, and feel behind if they don’t.

TL,DR: Give us an Artifact Weapon system, but with a mount/other vanity items instead of something tied to player power. This gives players more cosmetics, as well as something to always be working towards, without worrying about how it’s going to positively or negatively impact their DPS.

Can’t believe I forgot the most important part of this whole thing: make the skins account wide, to make the feature more alt friendly. That one might be the biggest stretch, but one can dream.

Reminds me of probably the most popular horse mod in skyrim. You could pick the color, shape sorta like if it was a bulky horse or not. Mane style and color. Even eye color. Saddles and armor. You could even have the horse have inventory so you could carry stuff with it without having it weigh your character down.

The idea of gearing a mount I think would be cool.

The gear can have powers, even though you don’t “use it” in a Raid or whatever, you still get the powers.

The powers manifest as different pieces or baubles on the mount. You have transmog and whatnot, tiers sets that thematically mesh with the mounts and such. And when they all turn lifeless and dead at the end of the expansion, you still get to have your Mr. Potato Mount to doll up however you like.

Another angle would be to make mounts more dynamic.

Right now, your customization options for your characters are a dozen slots for modeled equipment. Imagine a dynamic mount model where you could add to that count.

Crinet, Crupper, Flanchard, Shaffron, Peytral - Five more slots for stuff to customize. Whether or not any of this has any stats would depend on how deep they want to go with the system.

In the end, though, cosmetics are the only content with any appreciable lifespan. Stats are here today, gone in a drop - if you’re particularly lucky, an upgrade can be rendered obsolete before you even get the chance to use it. But appearances are relevant for as long as your tastes dictate.

Great commentary so far! I’ve been thinking more about some of the features the mount could have, and have gained some inspiration from a couple of the comments.

Some features could include:
*Percentage increase to mount speed (5-10% maybe, again we want them to be good, but not TOO good)
*Extra backpack for bag space that can be stored on the mount (credit goes to Rosen for that one)
*Unlocking further slots for customization on the mount, but maybe without the stats, to keep it purely cosmetic (credit to Valynx with that one)
*Having these features actually show up on the mount as trinkets (credit to Piddy for that one)
*Include some features of the multi seat mounts, like a repair function or bank access

If you have any more ideas for features, or any other part of this thread, please continue to share!

Dragon Isles expansion.

Customize your personal drake companion much like Legion artifacts. Unlockable colours, features, and barding based on the content you do.

I’d buy it.

Edit: … and I just read the OP. Identical idea. This is embarrassing. But I’m glad we’re on the same page.

I’ve been hawking variations of this for awhile:

I like this idea of picking a dragonflight! That could unlock further potential for customization across multiple alts by say, having the base color of your mount be based on the flight that you choose to join, and have the customization options that you unlock as the expansion progresses be mostly similar, but maybe with slight variations to further highlight your flight choice

As long as there’s no AP grind then I’m okay with it lol

Expanding on the dragonflight idea, and making things more alt friendly, if you choose to align with a different flight, you don’t lose any features or options you’ve already unlocked

Sorry, just bursting with ideas here. Have certain skins and features (probably mostly features), be crafted and/or unlocked by every single profession, even the secondary ones. That would be a way to help professions be relevant again, and could also help people make a little gold on the side as well by making them able to be sold on the AH

Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Ah, a feature that would require a degree of ambition for the world-building aspect of the genre, rather than the eSport side.

Those ideas are… unlikely to manifest.

Unlikely? Possibly, but that’s the fun of speculation

Absolutely! Especially since we already have stuff that already somewhat does that (the fisher man’s lure for water walking, comfy saddle, etc) if I could make my Runestags fly I’d be ecstatic…

i’d be all for a mount progression system too OP!

Also, I think content in zones is currently designed around only being able to use ground mounts (lots of the secrets/puzzles are now easily doable with flying in shadowlands zones for example). Just another example of how their pathfinder system just limits them.

I think their content in zones should mimic that of GW2 a little where mounts help you progress different terrains. Mounts like yetis that are good at climbing cliffs, or bird mounts that can glide long distances, water walking mounts, etc. stuff like that brings the world to life imo.

Eh, we’ve been there, to a degree. And it was great already! But I’m tired to retreading ground.

custom mounts is coming, i see an eventual mount combat, the idea is already being tested with mount equipment, it’d be awesome if we had a new hero class called dragonknights where their combat style is mounted abilities and have elites we can farm in the air, the issue is going to be balancing every mount in the game based on the mount based spells and abilities
