New engineer needing tips

Started up engineering this expansion on my DK, and wanting to know what items from previous expansion are worth getting?

Trying to build up a list based on item to the expansion. Currently got BFA finished and working through classic to build up to the Jeeves

You need to define “worth”.

Things I use regularly:
jeeves
reeves (most commonly for the blingtron 6k but the repair hammer is handy when jeeves is on cooldown)
moll-ee (shorter cooldown than the postmaster whistle
goblin glider tinker (the one that “enchants” your cloak - less now with flying but still)
teleports (sometimes faster than going through the portal system)

Anything that covers a function and can be used as a raid cooldown, or a possible movement cooldown.

Nitro boosts are nice, and can be used in raid settings (last I checked) but the misfire is as likely to kill as help. Exactly how engineering is supposed to go.

Upthread mentioned repair bots (Jeeves etc.). I also carry a stack of saronite ScrapBots, in case we need more repairs than I can do with two cooldowns (Jeeves, Reaves). Because I’m an LFR hero; I wipe more than a public restroom.

Engineered mounts and pets are fun.

I guess I’m the wrong guy to answer; I’m a completionist and learn everything without regard to utility.

oh, I forgot to mention gnomish army knives from WoD. Every alt gets one.

The tickers are useful, like the goblin glider that is built into your belt. It’s really handy

The Goblin Glider tinker goes to the cloak. Nitro Boosts are for the belt.

LOOT A RANG!

As a ranged dps I can loot everything i need without having to run up and touch the corpse. I do it from a half screen away.

VERY useful to kill things that due in spots you can’t get to

Hunters get an ability called “Fetch” which does mostly the same thing. I still prefer using the Loot-a-rang on my hunter anyway as you don’t have the pet travel time issue.

Fetch requires you to target a dead corpse to loot and the pet will loot that and all surrounding corpses. Loot a rang doesn’t require targeting anything. It can also be used in combat without affecting what your pet is attacking, although using the Loot-a-rang, will change your own target (but not your pet’s target).

FYI: Fetch, and the even much better Play Dead, are worth grinding out from Legion’s Class Hall.

Likely going make a loot a rang for when I’m doing transmog runs

Are there still speed boosts from engineering? I am thinking about going for it to cover some massive vulnerability to kiting paladins have in pvp. (random bgs)

For me, the real value in this item is that it allows me to loot without breaking stealth. Not sure how many people are aware of that, or if it was ever intended to work that way.

Well thanks, that does it for me. You guys solved my dilemma of whether or not to pick up engineering. I was thinking about it just for the helicopter mount honestly, but the other utilities like the lootarang sound cool and actually useful. The problem is that the Hunter that would benefit from it the most just paid around 50k in mats to max out BFA alchemy and I don’t want to lose that. The option is to drop herb and then do engineering…I would obviously have to use alts or AH for the mats. My other viable toons would be a Paladin or Druid as they are not too far along in any profession, but then the question of which one will be played more and who will benefit the most…that always comes back to the Hunter. Who knew playing a video game would require so many decisions??

Edit: I was just looking at a list of schematics…the one for lootarang says only useable in Draenor. Is that correct or is that outdated? If correct that kinda changes the usefulness of that item since I won’t likely being going back to Draenor for much of anything.

There are two Loot-a-rangs. The Draenor one is cheap/easy to make and all your toons can use it, but only works in Draenor. But there is also a Cataclysm tier one that works everywhere but is somewhat harder to make (requires almost maxed Cata engineering and a fair chunk of obscure Cata mats) and only Engineer toons can use it.

OK thanks. So I’m still on for doing engineering as long as I’ll be able to use the one outside of draenor. I’m cool with just my eng being able to do so. I mainly wanted it for the old helicopter and chopper mounts anyway.
