I bought the following computer recently and just set it up: Snowblind Gaming Desktop - Intel Core i9 - 9900KF - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER - 1TB HDD + 480GB SSD (its a BestBuy prebuilt).
I installed MSI afterburner to look at GPU/CPU temps (I lost a computer due to overheating) and the CPU seems, at least to me, runs very hot while playing games. Idling everything is fine but the CPU, when running WoW/FFXIV on max settings, can get as hot as 93C. I’m not sure if there’s anything I can do to provide more cooling? I the computer in a open space and I have the MSI afterburner controlling the fan but not sure what else to do? Possibly the cooling included in the system isn’t up to the task?
What kind of cooling setup does it have? I found the model you mentioned on the manufacturer’s website and it has several cooler options. The default the site has selected in the configurator is a 240mm water cooler which should be decent, but ventilation on the case looks very poor which could be the culprit.
From what I can tell, from an ibuypower response, they are 120mm fans. There’s one in the back, two on the side, and one mounted in the middle (one the middle has several metal plates with “Deep Cool” on it?).
That one in the middle with the metal is the CPU cooler/heatsink. Sounds like your config has air cooling.
If your cooler is the DeepCool model listed on the website, it should be a reasonably good if not stellar cooler. This probably means that there’s not enough air getting pulled through the case, but it could also indicate that the cooler wasn’t installed well.
Does your tower look like the one picture here?
It doesn’t have the fans in the front or the vent port up top. It has a solid white front and on the the non-lcd screen side is has several slits for the two case fans. I’d include the link to BestBuy but can’t include a link due to blizzard rules I guess.
Yeah that matches up.
From what I’m gleaning from around the internet, this particular case does indeed have airflow problems, with people recommending to avoid using higher end components (like the 9900KF and 2080 Super) with it due to the heat they produce.
Putting more fans in might help but it’ll probably make the system much louder without improving temperatures much.
How long ago was it purchased?
Bought it this past Friday
If it’s still within the return window, that’s something you may want to consider. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s much that can be done to fix the temperature issues with this machine aside from running it with the side panel removed (risky) or moving its components to a different case.
Thank you for the advice. The return window is until June 11th. I’ll play on the machine for a day or two and monitor the temperature. If the CPU keeps running into the 80C and higher I’ll return the computer. If the computer didn’t have the spiffy side LCD I wouldn’t oppose getting a new case but the whole deal with snowblind is that side LCD lol.
Update Just a possible update. Was playing WoW when I saw that the 3D resolution scaling was set to 4K. I turned the scaling back down to match my chosen resolution 1920x1080 and the CPU temperatures seemed to level off greatly, 50-60C.
