Hi,
I’m getting a bug in retail servers that prevents me from moving on in the games story so I decided I might as well get my money’s worth and try out classic WoW. My question though is about starting. I don’t know exactly what season of master is and I don’t know what’s the best way to pick a server as there is no recommended server. Should I just choose a random server? Are server populations good enough for me to get to do group content like dungeons and eventually raids? I want to start classic from scratch and slowly move forward to classic lich king, is that possible.
Sorry for the rambling hopefully I got my question/s across right.

well, if you want to play classic wrath DO NOT make a season of mastery character. and as far as servers go, idrk tbh theres mega servers then high pop. Just choose one you like the name of, or look up stats if thats ur thing. to get started, go to the char creation screen make one up and start questing!
be warned tho, its is a grind and is not at all the retail experience
Welcome!
Will try to address your questions but this really is going to decide a lot:
Since you want to progress to Wrath Classic make sure on the Game Version drop down menu on the launcher you choose “Wrath of the Lich King Classic”. This will ensure your server choice is one that you can simply play through till you reach Northrend. The “World of Warcraft Classic” option on the launcher will have servers, including Season of Mastery servers, that do not have any other content on them but “vanilla” or the original game - no expansions.
Season of Mastery servers are set to last 12-14 months before the season is over and the servers are wiped. The season began in November of last year so within the next month or so it will conclude. There is currently a big experience buff on those servers and the option to transfer to a server with Wrath enabled once the season is over. However populations are very low on these servers and you might be better off choosing a Wrath server now, finding a great guild and taking advantage of the well stocked auction house/sales options.
The Wrath servers are listed by the tabs at the bottom for US West, US East and Oceanic. Once you have your region then it’s broken into Normal or PVP with roleplaying PVP in US West and roleplaying PVE/Normal in US East. They are further defined by population. Some very high pop realms are locked not allowing you to create a character there at this time.
I’m sure others will be by to recommend a specific server. I’ll just mention the ones that have the “new” designation have rerollers and newer folk that might be leveling from scratch like you. Just something to consider.
Best of luck and hope you have a blast in Classic!
Hope you have fun in Classic!
First thing I’d recommend: Bring a friend/make friends. I’ve learned that some server factions have their own discord servers, so sometimes that can help in this area, but Classic is much more enjoyable if you have someone tagging along, especially in the early levels.
Put your feelers out with a couple of new characters and try to find a niche in a server that skews more towards the faction you want to play on - though this isn’t a 100% dealbreaker; I play Horde on a mostly Alliance dominated server and it’s just fine (it might even be a tighter community because of it). Making a class that can heal or tank will help a lot in the earlier levels vis a vis finding a group to do content with.
You can always join a guild so they can help you!
I just replied to a similar question in another thread. Below is a ctrl+V of that:
There are a number of communities to choose from. In terms of size on North American realms, Mankrik’s cluster (East coast) will be the largest for PvE and Whitemane’s cluster (West coast) for PvP. I play on one of the smaller communities as Horde on the PvP East Coast. Our cluster holds together the 5 realms of Benediction, Faerlina, Heartseeker, Incendius, and Netherwind. I would advise you roll a level 1 on any prospective realm and chat with the locals. Get a feel for the realms’ cultures and find a place that will be fun for your personal playstyle!
Edit: Woops, my bad! Disregard all that above. I just saw that bit you wrote about continuing into Wrath. My response was for the Classic Era realms.
