New Class? Debating DH

Hey all,

So I only really ever play a warrior, and dab with my mage (after however long BFA has been out I just got him to 120) but I’ve always been alliance, and I want to try a horde character.

I was thinking of a DH because I’ve always enjoyed the lore and class structure, plus simply experience the hordes version of the game.

Would you recommend a DH? Are they a decent class to level? They seem quite good at end game.

Thanks!!

As far as actually leveling it goes, once you hit 110, leveling is pretty fast. Even specced as Havoc, you can essentially mini-tank groups of mobs, and mow them all down with ease. The mobility makes moving around fun and so quick.

As far as how it feels when you play, I have heard people compare Havoc to Fury, in the sense that you sort of don’t care as much about the GCD. You always have something to slam on your keyboard, rather than waiting a few seconds for a spell to come off CD or wait for GCD.

I originally mained it in Legion because I couldn’t put it down, in BFA I tried to main other classes, but always got pulled back to DH. It is sort of a Fury Rogue Without Stealth, but with Warlock theme abilities. Kind of.

You aren’t going to be single target DPS kings, you work best when you are in a group of mobs, but when you are in a group, Eye Beam just melts and puts your health back up to full.

I am in the same boat as you, OP. I’m coming from a UHDK main and was looking to level a fun alt with a different playstyle that I could just pick up and go. Read around a bunch and settled on DH.

It was a good choice. Simple rotation with many cool abilities to add on, and the double jump guide is endless fun.

As far as leveling goes there is one thing to remember: MOVEMENT. Demon Hunters are a kiting class, and as such are as squishy as a rogue. They have very limited ability to face tank. Rogues use stuns to control a mob(s) and mitigate damage, a DH uses movement instead. For example:

  1. Open on a mob using Glaive Throw.
  2. Close with Fel Rush.
  3. Several Demon Bites to build to a Blade Dance (1 sec of 100% dodge).
  4. Fel Rush away, Glaive Toss from distance.
Weave in Chaos Strikes when appropriate.

<I can repeat this basic kiting sequence over and over on a single mob until death, very little face time with them smashing me, or…>

If more mobs join I escalate to -

  1. Eye Beam for massive AOE damage.
  2. Blade Dance, pick up Soul Shard(s) for healing.
  3. Immolation Aura for more AOE if necessary.
  4. Fel Rush away to begin kitting once again.

If you get slowed and caught you employ defensives like Blur. Your “Oh shizzzzz” button is Metamorphesis or when you take on elites.

Again, if you stand in one place you get blown up as if you were a rogue with no stuns available. Your movement is your actual defense. When I play well mobs often never really touch me. If I am sloppy or make a bad choice and get caught I can get hurt easily and have to work to catch up.

Obviously I am not a pro player, I am still leveling, but I’m sharing the perspective of a new player since that’s what you’ll be. Dash in, do hella damage, dash back out again for safety. Repeat.

If this playstyle appeals to you DH is seriously fun to play.

That only applies until you hit 110 and can pick up the Demonic + Soul Rending combo. With that combo, you’re literally immortal while soloing. Also, remember that Chaos Nova can spawn souls for more healing.

Not sure if this still works since haven’t tried it in awhile but killing critters could spawn orbs as well so you could run away from a person kill a critter and heal up. If not you can always run to a weak mob and burn it quickly enough anyways.

I didn’t know that, thank you!

I went from maining a hunter from vanilla to mop. Swapped to warrior which was lot of fun and played warrior until halfway through legion. Made a Dh and have pretty much played that as my main since. Dh has a lot of mobility, can make meaningful plays in a game and have an easy rotation in pve. Once I maid my Dh I personally never really went back to playing warrior. I would definitely recommend trying it out.
