New appearances from upgrading/catalyzing gear?

I am trying to maximize the number of appearances I can get through the catalyst, and was wondering if upgrading gear (via flightstones) changes the appearance of the piece when it reaches certain points (i.e. 4/8, 8/8), similar to the forbidden reach gear. I am also told that if you convert a lower level piece at the catalyst and then upgrade, it will change appearance from lfr to normal to heroic. Is this true, or do I need to upgrade the gear first and then catalyze it, or does it not change at all regardless or upgrade amount, with only gear of new ranks (veteran, champion, hero) providing new appearances when catalyzed?

As far as I know, you catalyze it first at the low level, then upgrade it to higher level to get higher appearances. That’s how it worked last season, as well.

So upgrading first DOES NOT unlock the higher level version of a non catalyzed item, even if it goes from lfr to normal to heroic ilvl?

You take a low ilevel M+ or raid or Suffused piece and catalyze it to get the LFR appearance. Then you upgrade its ranks to get the higher tier appearances.

To be most effiicient with charges, focus on catalyzing only Veteran rank 1-4 and Hero 1-4 to get the respective LFR and Heroic appearances, and then after catalyzed upgrade to at least rank 5 to get the respective Normal and Mythic apperances. This will get you the 4 appearances in each slot using only 2 charges. Catalyzing Champion gear is inefficient since by unlocking normal and heroic appearances you will still need a charge each to get LFR and Mythic appearances, which would thus require 3 charges per slot to get all apperances.

Of course, getting tier or off-pieces that share mog with you class set from LFR and Heroic raid respectively will save you on charges on well.

But for non tier/your class set is my question. So say I got the rogue chest as a monk in lfr. If I upgrade it to 8/8, will it unlock the normal/heroic version of the rogue chest, or stay as the lfr appearance. No catalyst used, just the upgrade system.

transform it first then lvl it up

In your example, you get the rogue chest LFR and Normal mog appearance unlocked, but only the Normal Monk mog appearance once you catalyze. If you want two appearances from you class set with one charge stick to catalyzing pieces that are 1-4.

So the normal upgrade process does grant new appearances?

not like that
cant upgrade and tier it no skins
tier it then upgrade it skins

Put item in catalyst to get first appearance, then upgrade it to get 2nd appearance

Technically only need 2 per slot if you get an LFR and Heroic raid piece

For raid drops in LFR, Normal, and Heroic raid, yes you can get the base appearance for that difficulty plus an additional appearance for the next difficulty up if you upgrade the gear to lvl 5 on its track. This is true for tier, weapons, and off pieces.

Yes, at the item level breakpoints for the raid difficulties (item level dropped from Kazzara).
