New API changes announced in WoW UI Discord

They will be reverting a large number of API restrictions in the next beta build, and then in January’s post holidays build they will revert another large number of restrictions.

Which means addons are officially, once again, superior in every way to the base UI and are once again available to be used in large enough scale in Midnight that most of the problems are now resolved. (Which was inevitable because of how horrendous the base UI STILL was after all of this development and testing)

WHICH THEN BEGS THE QUESTION: WHY did we waste 2.5 months with this nonsensical disaster and create such a mess of a beta to just walk back most of it and reveal that the devs actually don’t know how to build a functioning UI on par with what addons and WAs have created?

im pretty sure that they said they were going to break everything at the beginning and slowly grant more access to it over time. that isnt new.

as to WHY? probably to help improve the UI idk.

Yeah I’m not sure why they’re seemingly giving in on this. They announced that addons will be able to see overabsorb values again, but that is not in the base UI at all. Meaning raid frame addons will again be mandatory because they’re no longer simply modifying the display of information that Blizzard provides, but rather revealing combat information that is otherwise inaccessible.

Here’s to hoping that’s not the full story or them starting down the slippery slope.

They said a while back that they were starting with the greatest amount of restrictions and would gradually ease off as time and testing dictated. So this sounds on track.

From a developer point of view, for unpopular ideas it is better to go beyond what you are planning to do then walk it back. There are two reasons

  1. You get all the squawking, by the overwhelming fraction of 1% that uses the forums, out of the way early.
  2. You make people happier by giving them back things incrementally than by taking more away incrementally.

In general people whose lives are getting a very little bit better are much happier than people whose lives are getting just a very little bit worse.

Blizzard is unwilling to admit or even consider that they may have made a miscalculation. Data probably revealed that they weren’t going to even come close to reaching their stated goal.

So healer addons will still be a thing?

Where are those trolls who were defending the great purge?

What did they roll back?

But blizzard doing what they said they’d do doesn’t make for a good stormbeasts ragebait thread.

It’s better to start stricter and roll things back then not start strict enough and having to keep adding more.

Like don’t get me wrong, there is still a loooooot that we will be missing and a lot disabled, but we also have a lot of them back and are significantly better than what we have on the base UI still even in neutered states.

So like, all around, we lost a lot of customization, got a neutered version of all the addons, now need several more addons to get what we had before, and yet through all of those hoops it is still better than the base UI despite all of their testing and development.

We quite literally wasted the last 3+ months.

No, we didn’t. And as for the “question that begs to be answered”, Blizzard already stated that they would be doing exactly this and why long ago. So why are you surprised?

lmao yea they went full clown mode saying every addon should be banned

Working as intended. Their plan was to started off with the most restrict API required to secure the game and slowly walk back the restrictions that aren’t needed.

They didn’t want to yoyo back and forth with regards to the restrictions.

The last 3 months was to explore what absolutely needed to be cut and what they can get away with leaving alone.

If I have to download a weak aura or AddOn for a mythic raid boss in Midnight because of these API reverts, I’m gonna be pissed.

If you feel like you have to in midnight, the reason will be crappy encounter design, not add-ons.

Still waiting to hear the impact on Weakauras.

WA is probably still gone. Blizzard’s changes are aimed directly at add-ons like WA.

Sorry Akar, it was a waste and accomplished nothing
