Yay! Here is yet another I quit thread. This is mostly because of the character limit restrictions on the subscription cancellation page.
My wife and I have played WoW since vanilla so we have been through the up’s and down’s like many others. For me there were three moments in the beginning that were WoW moments for me.
Flying in to Orgrimmar and the music change. Something about that music really felt cool.
Going from The Barrens to Ashenvale and getting pvp flagged for the first time. It was scary and exciting at the same time.
Rag popping out of the lava for the first time in MC.
Those are the three things that really got me in to the game and excited to play. There are countless other exciting moments in the past 17 years that I could ramble about but really the point of this is to explain why we are stopping here.
At some point in the past few expansions there felt like there was more emphasis being put on gameplay mechanics that were implemented for nothing more than to keep me logged in longer to finish whatever the particular task was. It is entirely possible that these things were always there and as I got older my tolerance for them dropped. I also think that it is entirely possible that Blizzard either intentionally or subconsciously put these things in to keep engagement higher. If you look at it from a scaling perspective, it would be hard not to suspect a correlation. If I can make ‘x’ number of players spend ‘y’ more time doing ‘z’ that means ‘d’ more subscription time.
Much of it was stupid stuff too. Restricting flight in the end of expansion patch zones is a good example. Terrain design of zones that have restricted flight then putting quests in place that require you to traverse said terrain “for immersion”. Time gating content, locking progression items behind rep grinds that had a daily, weekly, etc… cap. All of that stuff above isn’t fun to me at all. I would much rather pump big numbers to a bunch of mobs than run around for 10 minutes trying to find the obscure path up the 3rd hill to collect the book that the NPC forgot and bring it back to them.
I have enough tedium in my real life. When I play video games I want to have fun.
TLDR. Game used to be fun, isn’t anymore, might come back one day, no you can’t have my stuff.
Riding a horse around Elwynn Forest for the first time is my top ‘WoW moment’. I still do it occasionally and still enjoy it just as much.
If you put a line of space between your number 3 moment and the bulk of your post and then add lines of space between each paragraph, it will make it easier to read.
For each character who ride horses:
Human mage: Hearthsteed
Worgen warlock: Dreedsteed
Human warrior: Swift Palomino
Hunter hunter: Swift Brown/Fiery Warhorse depending on mog
Dwarf shaman: Pinto
Dwarf priestess: Quel’dorei Steed
Draenei Death Knight: Acherus Deathcharger
First of all, happy trails and hope you find something else that wows you, and I hope one day WoW will wow us again.
But I wanted to continue the train with my WoW moments since most quitting threads are salty.
(Started early in BC as a Draenei) So the entire whole starter zone was just mind blowing to me, as my first MMO. Music and scenery and when I first came to Azure Watch and saw the Exodar on the horizon and thought “whoa.”
And the first time I walked up to, and then into Ironforge.
Oh Horde side it was the entirety of Mulgore and Thunder Bluff that got me. I used to be so scared to walk near edges of cliffs and bridges.
Oh, many things have WoW’ed me in the game. Just last week, I was flying from pillar to pillar in Sholazar Basin, Northrend on a daily and it struck me how beautiful and surreal it all was.
But riding thru Elwynn Forest remains the top moment.
On the Horde side it was while I playing thru as Undead and really realized the tragedy of their existence. ‘Til Death Do Us Part’ quest had me almost in tears.
I didn’t play undead until much later, but that is definitely some of the sadder questing. If you actually read the quest text and pay attention to the names and areas and realize “ooooh…”
Otherwise it’s just “go kill these zombies and those zealots and some bats.” lol
