Never played the game lol

I’ve legit bought this game a couple months ago did some random quests had no idea what I was doing then left LOL. Is this game worth playing? Especially for a new solo player in 2019? I hear a lot of negative things in the game, just wondering if its fun.

How much fun it is very much depends on each individual person and the best way to find out what you think is to give it a try yourself. The game is more solo friendly than it’s been probably ever, so there’s that.

Wait. How do you have a demon hunter, which requires already having a level 70 character to make, if you’ve never played the game? Or do you just mean that you haven’t played the Battle for Azeroth expansion? I’m a bit confused, I have to admit. Regardless, hope you have fun whatever you decide. :+1:

when I got the game with legion it came with a character booster. I looked at many sources stating the best idea is probably not to use the booster but I disregarded that advice. Never played the actual game in depth literally played for a week but didn’t really understand it. The game always interested me had a couple of friends back in the day who were addicted to it but the controls and plethora of crap thrown at you on the screen (various menus and such) turned me away from the game. Plus I always had this thought that the games been out for 14 years everyone would be elites.

Ahhh, gotcha. It might be worth starting a new character at level 1 to avoid having a bunch of stuff on the screen just to get the hang of things before jumping into end game content. I’ve been playing for 10 years and still feel overwhelmed if I start a class I’m not familiar with at a high level.

If you want to push on with your high level characters, Icy Veins will help you learn your spell/attack rotation and the best talents and such to use.

As for menus and stuff on screen, there are various addons that can do a lot to declutter the UI and those may be worth looking into at some point. Not sure what menus you mean since most of those stay minimized and fairly inconspicuous unless you’re using them, but if you specify what’s annoying you, chances are someone will know a work around to make it less annoying.

For example, I don’t care for the large default action bar UI with the silver dragons on either end that feels like it takes up a third of the screen, so I use an addon called Dominos to ditch the dragons and scale down the action bars to allow more bars in the same or less space as the default one.

The game is 14 years old, yes, and there are a lot of folks still playing who’ve been playing a long time, but not everyone is an elite, and going by the trouble I had making a new account on Christmas day, there are still a lot of new players coming to the game. And as I mentioned, the game is very casual and solo play friendly, and I’m speaking as a solo playing casual.

You can play up to level 20 for free without a subscription, which is a fairly decent way to determine if the game interests you enough to go further than that. Note that the free version of the game is limited in a lot of ways, but it will still let you experience the way questing and low level combat works.

And definitely feel free to hop back here if you have questions. Plenty of folks here are happy to help new players.

Does it take long to get to a decently high level from level 1? It seems like there is so much stuff that its hard to know where to start lol

Really depends upon how much time you play daily and wether you have heirlooms or not.

I wouldn’t worry too much about how long it takes to level. There’s 14 years of content and a lot of the lower level content is just fun to play.
Somewhere along the line, you’ll learn enough from leveling to make in comfortable to start playing one of your higher level toons. A lot of player make a new toon that is of the same class and spec as a boosted toon just to get the basics of playing that class/spec.

Is the game fun for solo players tho? Cause I wonder if a lot of content is locked behind group play? If i go through leveling and playing solo will the game be enjoyable?

I would definitely recommend starting at level 1 and going from there. Leveling from 1-60 is quite simple now, you can just follow your nose and go where-ever you like.

At 60 you automatically get a quest asking if you want to go to Outland or Northrend, either choice doesn’t really matter, you will get a quest directing you to the next place to go to.

I find it enjoyable to play solo, the old world is pretty rich with lore and once you hit max its easy enough to get a random group for raiding etc

Again, that’s something that really only you can answer by trying it out and seeing how you feel. The only content that’s locked behind group play is scenarios, dungeons, raids and certain types of PVP (I think - I don’t pvp so I can’t speak to that).

Scenarios are level 90+ 3 man random groups and I’m generally okay with those since they’re fast and only involve grouping with 2 strangers. Dungeons are 5 man group instances that start around level 20, I think. And raids are for 10+ people, that start being available at level 60.

About 80% of my WoW time is spent playing solo and the rest is spent playing with my boyfriend. I don’t care for grouping with strangers, so as a rule, I only do dungeons and raids once they’re old content and I can solo or duo them.

Even avoiding current grouped content as much as I do, I can still find plenty aspects of the game that are enjoyable and fun for me. There’s plenty of content in the world, especially if you’re brand new and haven’t done any of it previously, even if you never step foot in a dungeon or raid.

If you still want to experience that content, there are options and in game tools that make it possible even if you don’t know anyone else who plays. That said, it’s certainly not mandatory to do the grouped content. Most of the content - questing, pet battles, etc. - is out in the open world.

All you can do is give it a try and see what you think. Good luck and have fun!

You can start using the dungeon finder at level 15. It will form a group of five players and load them together into a dungeon. You can select either a random dungeon or a specific dungeon to run with the group.

The other form of group content is battleground. Teams are formed similar to the way dungeon groups are formed. The first battleground becomes available at level 10 and is basically a game of capture the flag.

Thanks kindly for the clarification, Mr. Nok. *Tips hat I was hoping someone who knew more than I would correct me if I was wrong and explain more about the pvp end of things. :+1:

Thanks for the good well informed feedback. I’m going to give the game an actual in depth try this time. Another noob question any recommendations on a class/race to play. Obviously all classes most likely play completely different. Any recommendations on the funnest and most viable ones to give a shot?

I’m partial to pet classes, hunter or warlock, since the pet acts as a tank and can minimize the damage you take. Plate wearing classes like warrior or paladin are also good since their armor gives provides extra protection so they can take more damage than, say, a cloth wearing class.

If you’re not sure what type of class you want to play, druids are good since they can fulfill all roles: tank, healer or damage dealer (DPS). Paladins are also versatile that way.

Glad you decided to dip your toes back in! I wish I had a character on your server to help you out with bags and a bit of gold and stuff to get you started.

Thanks for the info. Also I forgot to add what server should I play on should I just go in the most populated one I can find?

I am not the right person to answer that, unfortunately, since I can never remember which realms are best for Alliance and which for Horde, etc. which is maybe important if you’re looking to join a guild.

I’ve heard that Dalaran tends to be good for new players since it used to be a New Player realm and lots of the folks there remember what it was like to be new and are open to helping others.

I play on Alleria/Khadgar because that’s where the friends who got me hooked on the game played, but I can’t speak to the community or the guilds since I tend to do my own thing.

Again, hopefully someone else who knows which realms are best will come along to advise you. I’m out of my element here.

there’s 241 North American region realms and the same player base plays on all of them.

Realms designated New Player are more likely to have entry level people as they are the default realms. Blizzard tend to keep the new player designation until the realm become a high pop realm. Relm population matters little while leveling as the leveling zones are virtual and contain players from all realms. When a zone gets full, they create a new instance of it for the additional players.

High pop realms are nice at end game because you have a larger selection of guilds to choose from. You also have a larger market for stuff you sell on the auction house but that corresponds with more competition for sales.
On the down side, high pop realms have been known to have login queues and performance issues when new xpacs are released,

RP realms tend to be a bit laid back. You don’t need to RP to play on one but the naming standards are stricter - e.g. no names referencing modern tech and such - and you cannot interfere with RP in progress.

realmpop.com is the goto site for realm population figures, faction ratios, etc. The population info it displays is a 3 month running average.

I have been playing off and on since Vanilla and have always played solo. I like my anonymity online, I like the noises of the game in my headphones rather than people talking.

That said I have explored the social aspects of the game too, and they’re always there for you. Meet people, make friends, whatever you want.

My point is that the current game is the most friendly ever in allowing you to play the game however you want. I am sitting at 380 ilevel on this toon and all my gearing has been through world quests, emissary, warfronts, and rando pvp. Raid ready in my guild if I wanted to all by myself in the random times I can play.

But more than that, you have to enjoy the process, including leveling. You need to kinda fall in love with your toon, you’re going to be spending A LOT of time with it, so play what seems cool and fun. Read on some of the class forums, lots of threads out there about why people love their class, or start one yourself as a question to experienced players. Some classes are easier to level; hunters and warlocks have pets to tank for them. But seriously, play what’s fun.

And get away from expectations and just have fun. If your toon suddenly gets boring, start a new one, maybe two. Be a mount collector, or pet battles, or pvp. There is no right way to play this game. Nothing else matters if you’re not enjoying yourself in game.
