Network Adapter related and Fiber internet

Clueless about what kind of adapter I might need to get the most out of my soon to be 1gb fiber internet so I’m wondering if my current network adapter, Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX210 160MHz, will actually get the most out of it or if it isnt good enough for those speeds…google is telling me up to 2.4gb because of the 160MHz but I figured I’d ask in here as well…

The thing about wifi is that its performance is highly variable regardless of your hardware. Even if you have the best router and wifi card money can buy, you’re not going to get theoretical maximum performance, and how much worse it will be depends on how your apartment/house is built, how much distance there is between the two, and how many other RF-emitting devices are in the vicinity among several other factors.

The most surefire way to get the most out of your fiber is simply hardwired ethernet with a gigabit ethernet card (preferably with Intel chipset).

I have gigabit fiber too and am running my machines over wifi 6, with both a card and router that are theoretically capable of gigabit speeds, and while performance is still good it’s not as good as hardwired would be. I need to run ethernet through the walls but haven’t had the chance yet.

I’ll very likely just connect directly to it through ethernet on my PC since no one else will really use it for anything other than streaming and phone usage

Ethernet is the only way to get true 1gb speeds or close to. My 1gig internet topped out at around 985-995 …Wifi won’t give you a gig at all or even close really. It’s just not that fast yet.

Yeah I’m looking into my ethernet adapter now to make sure it can get those kind of speeds and making sure there arent any sort of settings that might need to be changed that are capping it at 100mbps like in the past with others

How old is your system? Should easily support 1 gig. As long as your router and your ethernet card support 1gigibit then you should be fine.

I got it at the beginning of Shadowlands…sometime after Castle Nathria was released, can’t think of a specific date.

We’ll see Thursday when all of it is installed. Just hope this Mediacom Xtream isnt complete crap. Should be better than the DSL I had with Frontier at my old place and this super crappy 25mb speed ATT has been offering my GF forever.

just read up on the mediacom xtream service, and it has a 6 TB cap =(

should be ok but i would keep an eye on it

Yeah I saw that as well but with my work schedule it is extremely unlikely ill ever reach that amount in a given month even with me sharing it with my GF who just watches netflix or looks at tiktok when im gone to work

You’d have to be downloading loads of pirated movies and software and probably wouldn’t ever reach a 6TB cap. If your just playing wow and streaming movies,tv you have nothing to worry about.

A little before and after picture of my speeds now that it has been changed from AT&T to Mediacom

I heard that logging into a vpn would give you the most internet speed for your buck. I myself would like to learn how to do this.

I’m using 1Gbps internet. Getting 900ish Mbps out of it. My house is using full CAT6 cables. Moving to 2.5-10Gbps internal network once those hardware becomes affordable. 10G will need me to upgrade some physical lines to CAT7-8 though.
