From a 2007 post and from the tooltip in-game.
Hellfire does fire damage to yourself.
Check the comments in here from 2007 about it working as intended back then.
Go to the TBC wow head for Nether Protection
Currently it does not proc from hellfire and is a major issue.
This is in TBC Classic.
