This pet does insane damage to everything! Every time I see someone with e NW, I just forfeit It isnt worth my time just to lose to something you can beraly do damage to and that does attacks 700-1000 with everything it does to ANY pet. Ive tried undead, mechanical, dragonkin…they all take ridiculous damage from this OP pet.
Clock 'em will hard counter the nexus whelp, and anubisath will steal his lunch money. He’s hitting you so hard because arcane winds/mana storm is nasty; you either need a mech (strong vs. magic damage) or a counter-weather change. Either way, you also want humanoid attacks, which wreck dragons. Hence, Clock 'em or Anubisath.
Nexus Whelpling is definitely one of the stronger pets in PvP. Has a solid stat spread, and self-synergy, even synergizing with duplicates of it. But it has plenty of counters, which can be pretty easy to exploit, since a lot of Nexus Whelpling users use it because of its simplicity, and have relatively little knowledge of pet battles. Here are some counters:
Any non-Arcane Winds weather ability: Part of what makes Nexus Whelpling work is their dependence on their weather effect. If you can predict when they’re going to start their Mana Surge, you can activate a different weather effect to reduce your incoming damage by a sizable amount. If you’re running a slower pet (although most outspeed common breeds), you can use the weather effect on Turn 1, since most Nexus users will use their weather ability on Turn 1. It’s a bit of a gamble, though, as a smart player will predict this play and fake out with Tail Sweep.
Any forced switch ability: Abilities such as Phase Punch, Wing Buffet, Death Grip, etc. can completely wreck a Nexus Whelpling if used before turn 2 of Mana Surge.
Any dodge or ability-blocking ability: There’s plenty of abilities in this category that can effectively remove most of Mana Surge’s damage output: Dodge, Phase Shift, Decoy, Ice Barrier, Prismatic Barrier, and to a lesser extent, abilities such as Burrow or Dive can negate a lot of damage from Mana Surge. On that note, Rabbits are a good counter, since they pack both Dodge and Burrow, allowing them to completely negate Mana Surge’s damage if Dodge is timed correctly.
Higher-end damage reduction abilities: Abilities such as Ironfur or Shell Armor can negate most of the damage from Mana Surge.
Finally, abilities such as Jar of Smelly Liquid and Weakness can reduce damage by a sizable margin.
So plenty of options. The key is effectively finding ways to negate the damage output from Mana Surge, and the relatively low speed of the Nexus Whelpling, P/P in particular, makes taking advantage of such counters that much more doable.
Interrupt abilities will not work under Arcane Storm.
On Topic:
Just run a slow Iron Starlette and one-shot it.
Fair enough, post updated.
EDIT: Going off of Tank’s post, Abilities like Howl/Prowl/Supercharge + A big damage ability such as Surge of Power or Arcane Dash in general can kill, or at least heavily damage a Nexus Whelpling.
Blind rat or Frostfur rat completely destroys Nexus Whelpling as well. Crouch to reduce damage, call darkness to change weather and do massive damage, sneak attack to finish.
You’re right. I tried my triple nexus team against Erris the Collector in the garrison menagerie today. Her team of level 25 rats just demolished my whelplings.
Kun-lai Runts were effective though.
