Need many tips on pushing as WW monk

(I apologise up front for any English errors, I am Asian and speak Chinese at home.)

The glad goals are far far away…

Hello friendly people of the arena community, I’ve come seeking advice, be it blunt or not.

Basically, I only play windwalker monk, but although I’ve finally reached 1.5kcr, which is a new highest for me.
However, the issue is for the past few weeks I’ve been stuck here without being able to move out of 1.5k.

Currently, I’m at ilvl 427, but it’s been difficult for me to analyse and understand where my problems arise from, and I’m not sure how I am to improve from here.

I’ve been told I can find good partners in LFG, but so far it’s been more detrimental than good to both my CR and my arena experience.

(NOTE: I’m not saying it’s not my fault our teams lose all the time. It’s just that I can’t find teamates that are willing to give me the advice needed so I can improve. I usually don’t blame anyone because I’m so unsure of who actually caused the loss )

Granted, I’ve found some good players who use VC on discord and were actually willing to give me tips and guide me while they healed.

Then, most of them blocked me or started just plain ignoring me over the past few weeks.
Possible reasons are:

  1. I’m not good enough for them

(which is a fair reason in terms of experience and saving their CR but the problem is when we played together we really did quite well)

  1. I’m annoying because I keep asking them if they want to play.

(it’s a bit of my fault, but I’m really enthusiastic to get the games down, if they don’t have time for me EVERYDAY I get it, but what’s the point if we play together once, then I become sort of a beggar to them afterwards? Isn’t the point of maintaining these contacts about practicing together, becoming buddies and building team cohesion?)

(In FACT, living in Asia means that 12am here is about 12pm for EST. I make time and be up early in the morning and late at night so it is more convienient for their time zones but in the end they don’t show up for allocated times / are playing something else then, while ignoring my messages.)

Of course, when we point fingers at others, we should also reflect and look upon the errors of ourselves. As I said, I’m way too overly enthusiastic to getting glad goals. Gameplay-wise though, can use some improvement myself. I need help with:

  1. Not tunneling and having more aware of what the other two enemies are while I’m chasing the target.

  2. Being able to CC healer.
I’m good at pulling of double stuns with leg sweep, but I can’t use paralysis right. Even though I put focus on Heals and have a focus paralysis macro on, I just can’t seem to get the timing right.

(might be a limit due to lack of coordination in VC-less LFG, or just me tunneling)

  1. What trinkets I should use.
I have the whole set of pvp ones plus some mythic ones, but I’m really confused to use what when.

  2. How to run away properly, and still be useful when doing so.

When I’m being targeted, I struggle to get much dps off and I’m constantly running around on low health. Sometimes, I don’t even know how to run away properly.

  1. My Dps performance heavily fluctuates.

It’s so bizzare that I don’t know whether it’s I’m just bad or decent because I can’t tell if I am the limiting factor or that sometimes the enemy is just really too good. If so, then I would need advice on gearing then.

  1. Comps comps comps.
I know that Walking dead and prehap Mage WW and resto are good comps. Anything else viable though? Most LFGs (unfortunately) don’t actively look for WW so I’m used to finding peeps myself, so this would be good info.

  2. Macros.
I have focus paralysis, but other than that I don’t have much. Guides online say WW don’t need much, but I feel like I’m missing something.

Hence, if anyone is able to give me advice on any of the above, climbing in general or prehaps nice places to find new teamates/teachers, I would greatly appreciate it. Below are a bunch of things I have done to reach my goal. If you think anything is wrong/missing/not enough, please do tell me!!!

Things I (honestly think) have done already:

Preparation:

*Set up effective UI
*Spent time doing keybinds
*Learn how to talk effectively in VC
*Grind Island exp for AP
*Grind Mythics for decent gear (have some pieces that are at 440, my wep(s) and my dumb belt prevent me from reaching 430)

Enrichment:

*Watched Cdews/cdonts
*Watched venruki
*Icy veins monk guide
*Wowhead monk guide

Teamate finding: (Most of these are unsuccessful)

*Guild hopping on my server
*Multiple Discord groups
*In game pvp communities
*Reddit
*LFG, be it by playing normally or specifically asking for long term vc teammates only

Things I feel like I can do now:

  1. Ask for advice here

  2. Go back to running headfirst into LFGs, maybe somehow I can spot some errors of mine/ find rare teammates that are willing to stick with me.

  3. Or Grind gear more vigorously, something I do not particularly enjoy but understand is (unfortunately) required for better arena performances.

If you’ve read until here, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a stranger that even remotely cares about the problems of others, of someone like me. I hope this advice and help that you guys provide will give me hope (and hopefully also the skills required) so that I can still reach gladiator for this season without being a burden on anyone.

Faliure only occurs once you give up. For now, although it’s been a disappointing few weeks compared to when season just started, I’m “glad” to say I still won’t give up. For that damn drake.

Best thing to do is just keep playing. The more you play, the better you get.

Que up in lfg as much as you can. When you find partners you like , add them on btag and try to play with them again. Arena is just as much networking as it is actual skill.

A Monk? They kinda jank
But they hit like a tank
take that to the bank
to push your rank
this aint no prank

A lot of newbie problems stem from how they view the game on a fundamental level. A lot of lower rated people will just arbitrarily use things for no reason. You need to start seeing the game as chess with major cooldowns. We call this “trading cooldowns.”

example: say you run in and pop everything at the start of the game. This will usually mean all your cooldowns will just be traded and negated by 1 thing like sac or evasion or ironbark. Win conditions tend to be when you have things and your opponent doesnt have things…although this philosophy usually goes out the window when you do tons of damage and arent in trouble. But in general its a good way to think. So say you sweep and fists and whatever ww cds are, and you get trinket+evasion and ironbark from them for example, which is a huge overlap. Then say right after you get kidney+vendetta’d…ideally here you want to use ONE cooldown of yours or your healers. This means your next go will be devastating for them and you will be safe for several more of their goes. This would be a good time to maybe port and reset to avoid damage until you have things, or just stay offensive if you think youre fine.

This is how you need to think about the game. Learn to be greedy with cds and dont over-commit too soon or under-commit too late. If you can force cds without using all your cds, this is ideal. This is where on-use trinket and orc racial are good because they allow for big dam without using your major cds.

If you learn to be aware of this against every comp, youll start to win a lot more. Good luck man, you sound like youve put in enough work so you more than deserve to start seeing improvement

couple things that will help you:

keep playing, finding the right people is the hardest part about this game imo.

When I was 0 xp, I found that pvp guilds on tich were a good source of partners, they at least had the commonality of being guildies so they wouldn’t instantly be toxic and leave. To this day I still play with some of them, and I even found later that some of them were notorious for being toxic, yet I had a good experience with them due to that initial connection.

Going a little more in-depth:

Realize that arena is about identifying the win condition of your comp vs the enemy comp, and simply executing that win condition, much like pve scripted encounters. However, youre not facing bots, and as you get higher, people know your win condition, and will actively try to stop you from achieving that win condition, while forcing theirs upon you. It’s a push and pull dynamic.

For example, for a setup comp like jungle or rmp, you want to prevent the enemy from healing, so you want to CC their healer, and at the same time, you don’t want the kill target to run away, so you want to lock him down with a kidney shot or a bash stun. You don’t want the off target to peel you, so you cross CC him. You want to get through 100% of his hp in this CC, so you use offensive cds. This is a perfect setup, and what can stop this? Enemy cds and trinkets. That is why it is important to get through enemy cds, and use your own sparingly. A lot of times, just executing 50% of your full setup will be enough to pull cds, and put you ahead, and doing this repeatedly will eventually lead to landing a kill. Remember that your offensive moves (cc, burst damage) are much more powerful in conjunction with your teammates’.

To be able to execute your win condition, it is imperative that you know how to at the minimum perform your pve rotation without thinking about it, have good macros and binds for targeting, and it helps to position well, mind game your enemy to pull their stops before your full ‘go’ and coordinate with your team. Set yourself up for success, even if you don’t have the experience. Have the logistics set up before even stepping into the arena.

Find a team, then learn your win condition and practise executing it with your team in real games against better and better opponents. Watch streams of top players of your class and emulate what they do, even if it doesn’t make sense now, it will once you have a better understanding of the game. Don’t try to be “off meta” imo, learn the meta and get the basics down first before trying to innovate if you are seriously trying to improve, there’s just not enough information out there to assist you if you are doing things no one else is doing.

Also, dont be afraid to take a break. It can be hard to stay hungry and take this game too serious anymore because less people are playing, but dont let that discourage you. It can be very rewarding to achieve personal goals and dont let anyone undermine that. Dont get stressed and remember that at the end of the day, you are playing for your own enjoyment.

TLDR:
-keep playing
-find partners
-find your script, get good at your script, then you can go off script
-have fun

In regards to these, just have an answer for every situation before it happens. It takes time, but this game is generally balanced so that there is an appropriate response for every situation.

Doing pve damage isn’t your win condition most of the time as a WW, but rather doing massive burst. The most troublesome ww’s I’ve faced are very good at running and being slippery, while stopping cc on their healers, being disruptive in general and dumping all of their damage in a small window.

Be aware of where your healer is, just mindlessly chasing an enemy behind pillars while there are 2 dps hitting you could put your team in a very bad place.

First of all, thank you kindly for this advice.

In regards to this, prehaps I might consider a server hop to tich since I’ve heard here and there that’s where the more hardcore pvpers are.

Mentioned that I’ve been pvp-guild hopping a few, but they are pvp guilds on WrA, after all. A few bucks wouldn’t be a problem if it plays a role in overall success, furthermore, I don’t really have friends so I’m fine with it.

Right, things I will take into account, thank you!

Right, this brought up a very important realization for me, that I probably don’t have the best understanding of how to use all my mobility yet. I mean I don’t just use it randomly, but I could be better if I knew how to be more effecient with them. Thanks! (Most of the time I just use it to chase my target.)

Super true, should start having this preperation mindset now. (Although granted the teammates should be “coordinate” - able, and can react fast to things in game, give a clear and fast message to teamates, then adapt. I just need teamates argh)

Once again, you for your advice, I’ve read all of it and there are really lots of pointers I can take note of.

On another note, your English is better than English speaking people btw lol.

I’m not glad but I haven’t tried to arena very much I was an rbg rat.

Dude find the right person!
This is huge and you may not get glad because of it. I recently found a partner that has the same view set and attitude as me. It has made the experience addicting and actually fun.

Pretty much it’s not about rating and about learning and actually becoming better at the game. Your partner is just as important as yourself. They have to want to learn and improve as well.

Congratulations!

I understand, but my stand is a little different. I agree that becoming better at the game is the thing I should be doing , but that should lead me to my goal, which is climbing the ladder and reaching glad.

If my partner doesn’t have the same drive as me, maybe we will just irritate each other. Thank you for reminding me of this. Might make finding teammates harder, but quality is better than quantity. I will find them.
