First off: I AM NOT THAT GOOD AT PVP (My mains are BM, Arms and DH)
Ok, got that out of the way. I started playing like 5 months ago and buttons aren’t muscle memory yet. in fact, I don’t really have a comfortable layout/keybinds and that is the purpose of this.
First question: Elvui
So I have watched all the top streamers and not ONE of them uses Elvui. I am using Elvui. It doesn’t seem near as effective in PVP as the standard game UI with add ons. Any input here? Just watching them play, their screen provides SO MUCH MORE information than mine. is this through add ons, weak auras or both?
Second Question: Key Binds - I am having a very difficult time with where I should put what keybinds. What I noticed in the top players is they have essentially the same setup for all the specs they play. Any advice here?
What I really figured out after watching multiple players is the timing of “when to use what”. Like BM Hunter Exhilaration, I always used when I was at like 20% instead of when I should be using it at liek 80% when I am being focused on by other and healer is “occupied” or something. Just little bits I pick up here and there have helped… but overall I still am really a below average player… but every game I have played in my past I am always a top player and highly skilled.
So what would you guys recommend? Any specific sites out there? Youtube videos? Any guides? I can’t seem to get any better. My gear is all blues generally, so compared to just about everyoen I am up against I am considerably under geared… add my inexperience to that and I am the target of every solo shuffle lol.
I recently went 3 wins and 21 losses on my Arms Warrior is RSS at 411 ilvl (everyone else was full conquest and 4 piece). I know I have the skill to be able to get better, I just am having a hard time even being decent and it is getting to the point where it isn’t fun.
Where to start lol. Prob a ‘mmo’ mouse with buttons on the side will relieve alot of stress. I keybind Q,E,R,T,F,G,1,2,3,(4-5 IF NEEDED) (z and c for targeting arena 1/2 as healer or 1/2 when dps) and all of these in shift so its doubled minus what I keybind from my mouse. Pretty much across all of my characters I’ll have all my cc, walls, buffs on similar keybinds so it’s not confusing when I have one of every character.
Gladiusex is huge for arena as well as seeing DRs. Details to see whats hitting you the most and what you need to avoid. Everything else is pretty quality of life and not really needed. I use to run elvui but after a while I missed original ui and never went back to elv. Weakauras is huge too to see cds and a nice little compact area of info in your face.
Carefully watch, listen, and analyze these videos and apply what they tell you to do.
The difference between 411 honor gear and full 424ilvl conquest with full gems is super significant at this point in the season . It’s like playing a different game tbh. Make sure you do ur weekly pvp quests for extra conquest
I would HIGHLY suggest not using Elvui. I have tried to make it work in the past, but it simply tries to do too much and what it does do, it doesn’t do well compared to addons that prioritize specific tasks.
All your characters should have the same basic layout. No matter what spec I’m playing, the same general layout works.
Damage is always ~ through 6.
2 and 3 are always my most used dps abilities while 6 is always my least used. Think abilities that are on a 30-60s cd.
~ is almost always AOE.
I try to line up my DPS abilities in the order in which they would be used. So your rotation can be as simple as 2, 3, 4 in some cases.
R and Shift-R are always charge, disengage, sprint, freedom, etc. So are is always a movement ability.
F and Shift F are always stuns or fears.
Kick is always Mouse button 4 while focus kick is always shift + mouse button 4.
I try to lay things out in terms of importance. Less used abilities are “harder” to reach while things used most often are closest.
Honestly speaking, most of the guides are pretty bad. Watching streamers is great, but playing is best. Find a healer and learn the ropes while trying new things. Even asking questions here will likely help you more than anything, assuming you’re asking the right questions.
I think you just need to offer up specifics. Where and how did you lose. Logs help.
As far as addons though, I’d keep it simple. If you’re still learning, Gladiatorlossa is an amazing tool for helping to pick up on when to react. Sometimes hearing it is easier then seeing it.
Here are the addons I’d recommend though.
Gladiatorlossa - Audible event announcements
BigDebuffs - Makes seeing dispellable items easier to see
Threat Plates - Setting up specific plates for mobs, totems, etc. Super important IMHO! I have a plate setup for Shadowfiend, Obelisk, Skyfury, Grounding, Tremor, etc. Set it to 150% size and make the color whatever is easiest to see.
Clique - The default UI is better with mouse over binds, but not as good as Clique.
Gladius
Weak Aura - I have weak auras setup for very specific things to track. Like on my enhance I have an alert for 10 stacks of Maelstrom. You can do the same thing to track your barbed shot buff for BM.
Details for reviewing your damage, cc, death logs.
Reflex for match history
OmniCC
Omnibar
Outside of that, try to use the default UI for bars. The new UI is super buggy, so try to push it as far as you can for your setup before you resort to using addons.
As far as general advice, I’d suggest picking one spec you want help with and go from there. Simple things like knowing that you’re using the right talents and doing the right DPS rotation.
I do something similar, and I think most players who have alt do the same.
What you want is similar “roles” for each keybind. For instance I use “F” for my kick on all classes. A button on my MMO mouse is my big defensive, block/turtle/disperse/etc, for all classes. I use the same keybind for my big “blow them up” cooldown on all classes.
Doing this makes the muscle memory translate pretty well from one alt to another.
First off, thank you to everyone for your feedback and not just ripping on me
The learning curve on setting up my own weak auras, having no experience with it, is far too curved lol. Oh my god, I need a degree in engineering just to create a freaking template. Ill keep working on it…but sheesh
Downloaded this… Love it.
These 2 videos helped me SO much, thank you. These made me feel a little better knowing they made these videos because a lot of people are in the same position as me or once were.
Sure seems to be, thanks for pointing this out… again, made me feel much better.
Thank you for listing all of these, really made a difference for me.
While I didn’t use the same setup, this actually helped me strategize my new setup. Thank you.
