I’m just going to say it. I am not getting any younger. My ability to process information and react isn’t what it use to be and with the game getting more and more complex as time goes on I find I am struggling more. Mind you I am not trying to make a post saying “Make the game easier” or anything like that but rather hoping to get some help from the community to perform better.
I see that my biggest weakness in keys in terms of benefiting a group is my ability to, technically lack there of, determine what needs to be kicked and what does not. What is a priority target and what is not.
With each expansion the dungeons and their encounters grow more and more complex and I find when dealing with a pack of several different mobs it is a bit overwhelming trying to keep track of what to prioritize, what needs kicking and what is just a filler spell, etc.
It use to be simple. Cataclysm for example, pull a group of gil goblins and you knew to deal with the tidal waves or fighting naga oracles you knew to interrupt the heal. Now though there are so many different spells as well as seemingly dummy spells that don’t matter and exist just to eat your kick. Same with trying to determine which targets are the higher priority ones.
Are there any addons that anyone can suggest that can help better focus what are and are not priority kicks and help distinguish what are and are not priority targets to dps? I am not as hard core as I use to be nor am I as fast or skilled as I use to be. I just want to enjoy the game and be able to read situations better. To better understand what is and is not priority so that I can react better for the sake of my group.
Sure, there are addons and weakauras for everything. But interrupting isn’t rocket surgery. I’m not getting any younger myself. But as a Rogue since Wrath, kicking has always been my thing. The only way I know what to kick and what not to kick was to do it over and over. Knowing what each cast does and what to prioritize. I didn’t go into each dungeon or even raid knowing exactly what the casts do. But doing it over and over taught me.
In reality, I’m trying to get every interrupt I can. Whether it’s with my kick, my stuns, my garrote silences, even my blind. But still, knowing what they do is best.
Byucknah, thanks for your post. I am one of WOW’s gray players and I truly feel your pain. I started playing when I was in my early 60’s. Never played any kind of online game before so was overwhelmed at first to say the least. Heck…I didn’t even know HOW to fly once I was able to…who would have thought it was a simple as pressing the space bar to launch…thank gawd for the kind folks on this forum.
The one thing that allowed me to survive battles a bit more often was suggested by several hardcore ‘gamers’ at work. If you haven’t already, please consider investing in a Razer Naga ( or similar) mouse AND a good gaming keyboard. It took me a while to get to the point where my muscle memory took over when using my mouse and the extra programmable keys on my keyboard but it was worth enduring the learning curve. The keyboard I use, sadly I believe it is out of production now, is the Logithech G11.
What to kick changes as well as key level goes up the priority ones are still there but other interupptable abilities also become 1 shots and some skills need stuns or other hard CC to stop
This is more of a matter of knowledge/awareness rather than reaction.
Just kind of comes with doing the dungeons a few times.
You can look over what important ability each has then prioritize that. Example in gambit during SL was that as a healer I’d just stun the murlocs that’d drop the fishsticks that healed the group.
I’d cc their cast then they wouldn’t do it again for x seconds.
I think that there are a few weakaura packs. Some of them even show the CD on important abilities to kick or cc. There’s also MDT for looking at the abilities of all the packs in each dungeon.
Once you get into the swing of it things are a lot more relaxed as you’ve kind of scripted out abilities in response to incoming stuff.
