Hi folks,
I just received my alienware monitor and it has HDMI and DP wires, should I connect both to my video card? Or is that not necessary? If I need to and should connect both, what is the benefit?

just use the display port
This. In my opinion you should always use it to the DisplayPort over HDMI
+1 for DisplayPort. I can’t think of any reason to have more than one video connection between PC & monitor. I do use both DP & HDMI inputs on my monitor, but they’re connected to different computers - the gaming PC uses the DP input, the non-gaming system uses HDMI.

The DisplayPort is also the only Port that is compatible with g-sync if the monitor has it
One of my displays is connected to my PC via DP and lolVGA to my work latpop.
When I power down one, it knows when to swtich.
