Need help choosing a TBC main! Advice needed!

I’ve been racking my brain for weeks trying to choose. I don’t want to make the wrong decision, get discouraged, and quit playing because of it. I appreciate any tips/advice/suggestions!!

My viability priority: (does not need to meet all of these)

  1. Battlegrounds
  2. Farming & Solo-play (gold farming, rep, dailies)
  3. Raiding (barely behind gold farming)
  4. Arena (only to get the best pvp gear)
  5. Everything else

Other notes:

  • Being able to get into groups/pugs is important to me (bg premades/raid pugs)
  • Spec preference: DPS (by far) > Heal > Tank
  • I’m not necessarily a “FOTM player”, but I don’t want to gimp myself and struggle in any facet of the game

My current class interests:

Shaman - Favorite class fantasy. I have strong interest in all 3 specs (resto the least). My extreme concern with Shaman is the lack of their arena viability, their downtime while farming, and their value tied to being a support class and having to rely on other players.

Hunter - Most of my TBC nostalgia revolves around Hunter. I have strong interest in all 3 specs. My concern with Hunter is their over-population, and their arena viability.

Druid - What attracts me to Druid is that they are a “jack of all trades” which very much fits my playstyle and personality. However, I have no interest in playing Resto, but I am interested in bear/cat/moonkin. My concern with Druid is that I don’t want to gimp myself by playing a class and not having interest in its overall best spec (Resto), its arena viability, and trouble finding a spot in BG premades/raid pugs.

Warrior - The arena viability of Warrior greatly interests me as well as Mace-spec/Stormherald in general for PVP. I have no interest in playing Prot. My concern with Warrior is struggling in solo-play and having trouble finding a spot in raid pugs.

Warlock - The overall extremely high viability of Warlocks in PVE, PVP, & solo-play are a big interest to me. My concern with Warlock is their over-population of them in PVE/PVP and the complication of playing them at their highest potential in arena.

Thank you!

This definitely crossed my mind as I wrote this post, but my concerns with Warlock remain :frowning:

I don’t understand these posts. A previous poster told me it’s called “Rubber Duck Debugging” where you essentially write out your stream of consciousness and then have it in front of you where you can read it as an objective observer or something.

You already know the points. What’s the problem with Warrior? Raid spots. You don’t want to tank. What’s the problem with Hunter? Arena viability outside of drain comps. What’s the problem with shaman? They’re a support and you’ll be healing most of the time unless you want to go elemental which struggles in 2s but excels in 5s.

Your options are Ele or Warlock. You know the pros and cons. Why are you here? No one is going to give you insight that you don’t clearly already have.

Sounds like you’ve made the best cases for Druid and Warlock.

I personally will be going Warlock.

That being said, if you are still really not sure which class, hedge your bets and go Druid. That way you have three paths in one to try with the tanking, healing, and dps. One of the three roles is bound to suit you.

Good luck!

Well tbh you kind of held yourself into a corner to where warlock is going to be the only choice that will fit all your criteria by any decent amount.

The only other thing that fills your criteria really is a mage.

Hunter and Warlock are both great for BGs, solo, and raiding.

Lock gets the edge in arena, but you can push rating just to get gear on any class.

Those are also the two classes that require an extra bag to carry ammo or soul shards, if that matters to you.

This is a fair point, but the class does not need to fit all of my listed criteria perfectly

I appreciate all of the suggestions so far. It does help me.

Imo the only thing that REALLY fits your criteria is a mage. Unless you change your criteria to fit in healers then druid would be on the top too.

“I need a DPS that excels at literally every aspect of the game, will easily get 5man groups and raid spots and has good avenues for gold farming” If that existed no one would play anything else. You have to compromise in some areas. The closest fit is Warlock. You can’t say that you want this magically awesome DPS spec and then say

Does not compute. Something that “perfectly fits your criteria” is going to be wildly overpopulated my dude.

Warlocks will not be overpopulated. They are always needed and there’s never enough of them. There will be too many hunters… but too many warlocks has never been a thing.

Tell your brain: STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!

You’re overthinking the crap out of this. Holy crap… there is nothing that is best at everything lol. You can even play more than one character. There is plenty of time.

He’s just weighing the pro’s and con’s of each class he’s interested in. I know the pain of liking many classes/specs and having to choose a main. Sometimes the choice is random because you don’t know what you like better.

Sometimes it’s rough, man.

I completely agree with both points. It’s a very hard decision. Being reminded that “nothing is the best at everything” helps a lot, though. Thanks guys!

I know you know nothing is best at everything lol. I just hate that it seems you could be overthinking to the point that it could take the fun out of it for you  I want you to be happy

True. And I know that while I said you can have more than one character, having and leveling characters is easy, but attunements and gearing and getting into the nuances of multiple classes is a significant time sink that not everybody has time for

<3 You’re the best

Druid.

Druid is the only choice.

Here’s why.

You said you like bgs right? Well you can sit back and root, or cast HoTs on your team. You cast like 10 HoTs which is equivalent to the power of 5+ extra people on your team. You buff everyone as well with the strongest buff. You contribute the most!

You like farming? Ore and herbs. Insta flight form. Oh the convenience and time saved!

Boomkin and feral both viable in pve.

Arena you can still get 1500 with a rogue going feral. Anything over you go resto, get your feral gear, never do arena again.

Not only do you choose your fights and get the first hit in wpvp, but you also choose when to escape them.
