Need,Greed,Pass Loot

Howdy all,

Its amazing how classic is making me feel like a first timer at the game again , especially when i started in 05 and played since. plus I have not pugged for years for dungeons, I was always lucky to be in guilds were we did everything on voice and ran as a group. With people we know, things are more relaxing and planned and talked over on voice with loot etc.

As for pugs this is not always true, and the drama I have seen in pug groups due to looting on a boss drop can get a bit bitter, to the point some left the group.

So what i am asking is i always understood what we pick for loot options… If its an upgrade to our gearing and its a piece for our class and spec we would roll Need, if its not a upgrade for our class we either roll greed or pass.

Am I correct with this mindset, and which options do most players use now in classic ?

Thanks

The problem is what other people think is an upgrade and if they think their upgrade is ā€œmoreā€ important.

BOP: If you need the item, need it. Otherwise greed. It’s also common courtesy that at lvl 60 if you are going to roll for your off-spec to wait and see if anyone else needs it for their main spec first.

BOE: Blues/Purples everyone should need (unless other loot rules were discussed/set)

Nope. There is no set etiquette on loot in dungeons.

Every group has their own preconceived notions on what loot should be rolled or passed on.

The best thing you can do is make yourself aware of the group rules, so you don’t waste your time if you have any issues.

Thats not what the wowpedia says. Seems general consensus is that an etiquette does exist. Now whether or not you follow it is another story.

I didn’t say etiquette doesn’t exist. Reading and comprehension are two different things, and this is an example of it.

I do tend to roll greed if another class can also use that upgrade, but i don’t take the time to inspect them to know and hold the group up.

For need I forgot if 2 players picked need for that item do both have the chance of getting it ? or is it somewhat predetermined.

ā€œThere is no set etiquetteā€ implies that there isnt one at all. Nice try tho.

It would have been better to post ā€œwhile no form of etiquitte is fully agreed upon or used by everybody equally, there is a generall accepted form of etiquitte that most groups adhere to.ā€ There by mentioning that we do in fact have systems in place for loot etiquitte.

This is the best way to say it. And yeah the guy made it sound like every single group could just be needing on everything because there is no etiquette. Which obviously isn’t the ā€˜norm’.

The standard group loot is obviously, need if you need greed if you don’t/planning on selling, and pass if you don’t want it at all.

Obviously there are grey areas like with boe epics or high ticket items.

Thats exactly what I always thought.

there it is… same rules apply, but some folks make non-sense decisions cause of this quote right here.

Had a guy leave a ubrs group cause 1 person needed on an essence of fire — a bit extreme

I agree but I would think for those items greed would be best

the guy who won linked a pattern he could craft (mage robe i think). so it’s not like it was unfounded. no real rules were set in place. and it’s a mere 4g item on my server.
some fights aren’t worth having over trivial things.

so sure, ts mats are greed items generally, but i’m not gonna care if someone needs them either. If i needed a ts mat, i’d farm it. that’s just how i see it.

I wouldn’t have left the group, but that guy shouldn’t have rolled need on a crafting item. Everyone needs crafting items, if you really really need it then ask the guy who won it or just farm them yourself they are readily available throughout the world.

my same answer: Roll need on every BOE. Roll need on BOP if you need it.

Arguably sure, but for folks like a Mage with Tailoring, Essence of Air/Fire/Earth/Water means one step closer to BiS chest that lasts well into AQ40. The general argument for Need vs Greed tends to revolve around gear and gear upgrades.

The irony is that the same people that would go blue in the face over Essence of Fire being absolutely a Greed roll would also go equally apoplectic over someone not getting priority to Need roll on a BoE epic. Makes me wonder what people do with Skins of Shadow and Abomination Stitchings who have such contrived rules predetermined…

/shrug

There is no accepted normal any more… the greed filled retail player has ruined it…

blizzards stance is loot rules need to be clearly stated and agreed to before the run starts…

need > greed is too confusing for entitled millennials’ to understand because in their mind, they need everything

Correct being the operative word here, how are you defining it?

I could see this as meaning social etiquette, ethics, religious or political gains, technical system requirements, words & meanings, etc. They may all have somewhat differing answers, and ultimately I think it’s something you would have to decide.

^ a small minority (in my opinion) seems to be promoting this. Personally, I don’t like this mindset, but it’s a very nice, clear indication of someone I would not befriend, run any further instances with, nor ever wish to interact with in game.

That is my choice though. Considering how rarely I have encountered this behavior, that works fine for me. I’m not suggesting nor recommending anyone else change anything about their own behavior that they are comfortable with to accommodate my preferences.

Oh look this again. This is a spam topic. Topic is spam. JS.
It’s just like those guild groups you were talking about OP. Discuss loot in party with the whole pug group before starting the dungeon.
Assuming every group has universal loot rules in 2019 is down right stupid. We’ve had a decade+ to learn this lesson.
Out of all this loot drama you’ve allegedly seen, how many of those groups discussed loot rules before starting?

Don’t you love it when the Quel’Serrar book drops, but the derps here insist that you can only greed for it if you’re not a Warrior/Paladin. Then that Warrior gets to need and deny the rest of the group hundreds of gold.

And of course, Warrior can end up selling it.
