Need advice on a new gaming computer

Recently returned to WoW with SL release. Been playing on my MBP 15" connected to my LG ultrafine 5k thunderbolt 3 monitor. I play on the lowest graphics settings since I mainly play arena and need no lag.

I want to enjoy the graphics of the game and want to play on max settings. Also, I want to be able to record my games using OBS or other app.

Is there any decent gaming laptop that would get me there? Or do I need to buy a tower PC? what graphics card do I need to run wow on 100+ fps max settings while screen recording?

It’d be nice if the laptop/motherboard can support thunderbolt 3 so I can keep using my existing monitor (with lowered resolution ofc).

Thanks!

RTX 3080 FE is $699 if you can find it with stock.

You can add this for TB3 support:

Intel build is better way to go for streaming due to Intel Quick Sync Video. If you can wait, Intel is launching Rocket Lake on March.

Switch to these parts once they are available:
Core i9-11900K
Asus ROG Strix Z590-E
WD Black SN850 1TB (if you want PCIE 4.0 SSD)

Not realistically… intel i9-10XXX series chips in laptops flirt with 90c just running games nowadays. If you are looking to stream on top of that, the overhead just isn’t going to be there.

You will get a much longer and happier life out of a proper tower PC that’s not running hot on you. The build linked above is fine if you have the budget for it. However, you are going to have a very hard time finding a video card right now, shortages are expected until at least April. Best advice I can give is shop local, it will surprise you. I found my 3070 at a nearby Gigaparts.

Ryzen is better for laptops right now. They are way more efficient, and therefore end up actually boosting.

Unlike intel desktop, where it’s easier to solve the 14nm cooling, laptops just can’t manage it.

if you can find that card at that price, do us all a favor and get it

If you go with a laptop, watch a video on how to swap out parts. Some are a real pain and others not bad. I replaced my pcie startup ssd card in my msi laptop and it was easy. My older msi required the removal of motherboard to swap out startup ssd, so I just replaced the sata data HD to ssd, but startup is ssd but not pcie.
