This is all purely fun speculation. One idea I would like if they did ever give us a necromancer class would be a hemomancy spec.
The necromancer would have no mana with an increased health pool to compensate, using their own HP to fuel their own spells.
They would have cooldowns that would act like a monks stagger so you could take the damage over a set amount of time rather than all at once and maybe something so a proc can happen and any spell you cast on the mob afflicted by the debuff are free but the debuff only lasts a few seconds.
To compensate for using their own HP as fuel for their magics, they would have a slightly larger HP pool as well as their spells being a bit stronger.
What are some specs you guys could come up with for the necromancer if we ever got a class for it?
If Blizzard is going all in with the rpg aspect of classes then they should do that for all classes.
Glyph for priest and paladins to have different colored spells to represent their different faiths. Glyphs for shaman warriors to get single minded furu back and a talent for glad stance.
They can heal by stealing health from enemies or by sacrificing their own. Could also be a curse you place on one enemy and then tag an ally to get healed. Also could tag an enemy to heal whomever damages it.
Honestly, i think people would be a lot less bitter about some race/class combos getting approved.
Prelates and Sun walkers are not really traditional Paladins of the light. Night elves only worship Elune and are not really traditional priests of the light.
To add on to what Aeons said, there was an old, old interview out there (from 2002-2003 time frame) where the original devs said Warlocks were supposed to be necros but they didn’t want to completely copy EverQuest. The old Life Tap spell is a hold over from that.
So yeah, necros would bring nothing new to the table.
If you wanna do a necromancer it has to have very specific differences.
The healthpool as a resource is similar to a lock mechanic and I can see it being a balancing nightmare.
When I’ve written up necro concepts in the past (I write up fully fleshed out classes for fun in my free time ) a couple jumped out for me.
Caster “Tank” spec. Where you summon a flesh golem type mob that you literally ride into battle and has strong tanking abilities. The Necro would micromanage the pet while also casting some of their own abilities. Most of the necro abilities would be focused on boosting the pet. To summon such a powerful undead creature they would have to link themselves to the golem which means any damage the golem takes is shared with the necromancer and you can heal either of them and it would heal both of them with a ‘ratio’ applied so it would sort of work like a shared health pool.
another spec would focus around raising dead mobs to fight for you as “DPS”, their abilities would mostly be, again, supporting their raised creatures or raising more creatures to fight for them. some of these raises would be very temporary and others could be tied to a resource so that they could be ‘kept’ but with a reduction in power to the necro themselves because those resources are used for other abilities as well.
I had a whole 3 spec thing written up but it’s not on this computer. Basically the three trees were Flesh, Bone, and Spirit. With flesh being the tank spec, Bone being the Pet DPS spec, and Spirit being a healer that used a mob health to player health transfer mechanic.
Neat concept, but there’s still no justification for Playable necromancers.
Throughout history, we have hunted down and killed everyone who practices or teaches Necromancy. We have done all we can to destroy the Cult of the Damned, including destroying Scholomance and killing it’s headmaster. Necromancy is considered the most foul practice on Azeroth, even worse than Warlocks harboring the fel. Which most leaders have justified as being a force for the “Greater Good”
Those select few who understand the magic behind necromancy are not on the same side as the players. Sylvanas, Kel’thuzad, and Ner’zuhl (wherever he is now) They’re not about to share their most powerful secrets with us.
