I’m not sure if something has changed game side besides the UI improvements but as of the 10.0 patch I feel nauseous just by being in game, I have not changed anything on my end resolution, brightness, etc. I dont even have to move around to start feeling ill. this has never happened before in wow or any other game but it is now since the update. I have tried using the motion sickness settings but they are not helping.
That really is rough and I hope whatever is causing it stops causing issues for you.
I noticed the graphics settings, and the graphics themselves, were totally changed after the pre-patch, which I found to be very annoying. I had them set a specific way where I had the resolution lower and also the scale down. It was perfect, it looked good, and gave it a subtle pixelated retro look.
After pre-patch, everything seemed sent to ultra, with ridiculous 1900-something resolution super-super sharp. It makes the game look aweful because it’s an old game and cartoonish textures. WTH. But I noticed all my resolution options are gone, it’s either the 1900+x1XXX whatever or 1200-somethingxXXX (I don’t remember exactly, I just woke up and the game won’t launch anymore anyways which is why I’m on tech support forum this moment). Adjusting anything the graphics look BAD.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, I notice flickering with shades/shadows I don’t know what you’d call it on objects. It’s very subtle but more visible if in the distance. The graphics look like trash, messed up, subtle distorations, subtle patterns of wavy looking stuff. And my drivers are all good, it’s only this game after the prepatch.
I went into the Accessibility settings and noticed there is an option for an “alternative” mode (I don’t recall the exact name) but it says it’s supposed to help with stuff that might cause flickering and issues for people. Turning that on I haven’t noticed any difference.
Overall, the graphics changes makes the game look like some garbage, amaeteur Unity engine game. The overall game is darker looking too. I had to amp up the contrast and gamma. The vibrant cartoonish, colorful world seems muted like a thin layer of dark transparent film was put over it.
Maybe they paid off nVidia to stop their planned obsolences? I noticed overtime, I had to turn the resolution down for this game after updates and forced driver updates the game did by telling us the drivers are no longer supported. Since when does a video game ever do that? I ignored it until eventually the game would just crash. I update drivers-POOF! -it works again. However, old content, with older graphics, start to try and burn out my GPU and stuff. WTH? Why does Shadowmoon Valley cycling things up? Why do I have to turn it down? Did we time-travel but my computer de-evolved into a potato too?
After Shadowlands updates, a lot of this went away. GREAT. It’s like I KNEW it the whole time something was wrong. It just doesn’t go away. Something is done that changes it.
I bumped up some settings, but kept them for my preference.
As of now, you may understand that I keep a close eye on the settings, the way the game looks, the performance, and all that.
So you know when I tell you now that after the pre-patch, there have been drastic changes (OH LOOK, it maxed settings it runs without any issues, GPU is ok, YAY thanks nVidia, I mean, Blizz?!), and the game looks different, you have generous information for your consideration to take my word for it.
As of current, the game for me is limited to two resolutions. UGLY, and SUPER UGLY.
But worse, is all the subtle layers of distortions, artifacts, color and brightness depletions. It feels oppressive and distracting, and absurd. It makes it difficult to concentrate. I haven’t played enough to see if I reach nausea because of the huge disappointment of the sub-par UI/menu, and talent changes. Add the disturbing visual issues = just forgot it. I used to play this all the time. It’s difficult to now. I tried to play today and it don’t launch. Just more problems.
I hope they address all the issues, especially the graphics issues. It doesn’t appear sustainable IMO.
I have to run /console ffxglow 0
to disable the bloom because it makes everything seem too high contrast and gives me a migraine. It’s been like that since vanilla for me and I always forget to check it first when I’m having problems.
Also, I’ve noticed that in menus like the mount collection, it seems like the model viewer window has sharpening enabled, like the viewport has upscaling going on and is being filtered with the typical fsr+sharpness, even if it’s not enabled in the graphics settings.
Kind of a weird topic but I have to say I have been feeling some motion sickness too right since the patch as well. The worst so far was on a FP in Bastion. Never felt that before with this game in a lot of years.
I have tried that console command and lowered my graphics alittle and it seems to be helping abit. The game still seems off somehow thou.
Thank you for the advice!
I have noticed the same thing since the patch drop… Everything now seems almost cartoonishly colored, that colors are an almost “wet” or “slimy” vibrancy that it’s like someone just freshly painted them on everything all around the game.
Lighting seems to be off aswell that every light source is now just a blaringly bright flashlight pointed at you… I go up to the bankers in Oribos for example and turn the camera around to look at my character’s front and their face is practically glowingly bright white and yellow to the point it almost has no detail to it whatsoever with this shine upon it.
Whatever it is they did, fiddling with the game’s details, colorations and resolutions…I really hope they find some way to roll it back to pre-patch 10.0 coding, because the game looks like it’s trying to take on a high definition, “reality” look to what this game is and never had been.
Try what I said:

The bloom engine in this game isn’t the greatest. Realistically, they need to redo it because it’s probably based off the super simple old bloom effects from 20+ years ago. As far as I can tell, this engine still does everything in SDR color space.
EDIT: Oh and I’m not sure if they ever got around to fixing the bug where it doesn’t save/load the changed variable correctly, but you can just make a macro to run the command after logging it. Once you run it, it will stay on until you close the game client.
You may want to check out this thread:
There is a fairly long ongoing note of people having really weird framerate issues across all types of hardware and setups. I lost 30-50 FPS in each Shadowlands zone after the prepatch launched, which has def contributed to some motion sickness.
There are some helpful posts in that thread that worked for some, might be worth checking out.
This fixed it for me, Pawgwalker! I’ve had /ffxglow turned off since at least Cataclysm, and when I deleted my WTF folder it took the setting with it. Now I am no longer feeling the motion sickness.
It sure would be nice if they’d just add a toggle setting in Accessibility for this light-bloom effect.
I absolutely agree with this! Glad it worked out for you! I also tested to see if the client finally honors the config.wtf file’s setting for turning it on/off and it seems it does now. I think for all of BfA and SL, it was bugged out to where no matter what the setting was in the config file, it would always default to being on, so you had to manually disable it every time you lauched the game. That’s why I brought up the macro in my previous post.
Thanks Pawg, it’s actually insane how much of an instant difference that made, playing wow was making me feel so ill
