I swear before this update I use to have name plates turned off except for quest related npc’s, combat and players. but now name plates are always on for everything. I can either turn them completely off, or always on. Am I just dumb or did they change this?
The nameplate settings under Options>Interface still have the option to select Quest NPCs only and checkbox list for players/enemies, so I don’t know what to tell you. If those aren’t working, try troubleshooting any nameplate addons you may be using.

I am also having this same issue. I have had the same settings for so many years and am experiencing this issue with and without addons.
The “Always show enemy nameplates” button does not work if checked or unchecked.
When in combat, I can only see the nameplate of my target and not any of the other mob’s nameplates that I am fighting.
I know about V, Shift+V, CRTL+V and none of them work to resolve this issue.
However, it works perfectly on my Paladin, but not on my Mage. I really hope this gets fixed soon, or a solution is offered.

Yes! I am having this issue too and it’s driving me crazy. I don’t need every goat and bird labeled lol. It’s either on for everything, or off completely. I like having it on for quest npcs to make them easier to find so I don’t want them completely off. I’ve tried everything; resetting UIs, renaming wow folders, deleting addons, hitting the V key. Even my battle pets had status bars during a pet battle -_- On an alt, everything looks normal so it’s just my main and all the interface settings match. I opened a ticket so maybe blizz will have more help.
I am also having this issue on one of my characters, and not on any of the others. Anyone find a solution yet?
Edit: Seems like the issue happens after a character gets to Isle of Dorn, my alt does not have the nameplate issue before, but after the TWW prologue (Dalaran got doomed), the nameplate turns to always showing.
Having this issue on several characters just after the expansion update, didn’t have issues during the Pandaria remix. Seems like the “Always show nameplate” option is not working.
Have tried renaming the Cache, Interface, and WTF folders, removed all addons, reinstalled the game, and did a CVar reset, but nothing helped so far.

I am experiencing this issue as well. Some characters are fine and it works perfectly. Others are stuck with mobs always showing names. Very aggravating.
I am having this VERY EXACT situation.
this plate always showing but right now only occurs to me in war within content,
i go back to durotar, eveything works as usual.
do you have any update on this?
To answer my own question,
it was the quest “a sacred connection” thats causing this bug.
