Made a priest the other day for remix. Wanted to make a “fatherpotato” but sadly the name was taken.
So I made the he a she and decided to go with “motherpotato” but got a “this is a restricted name” message.
Why?

Good question.
Is it the sequence “herp” perhaps? But the other name has that too, and someone has that (unless previously made characters aren’t rechecked after name filter changes? I’m not sure if WoW iterates and forces name changes when stuff that used to be allowed no longer is like I know SWTOR did.
Is it “mother”? That would be odd though, especially if “father” is allowed (but see No. 1)
Is it just some kind of random oddity that the name filter doesn’t allow, like D2R players were seeing? (Apparently, some stuff that’s literally even acceptable and not even all that unusual to name someone IRL isn’t allowed there, for instance “Mats” which is a not-very-odd boys’ name in some parts of Europe)
Struck me as odd. Sister worked though. Now I wish we had a cloth habit like helm.
lol no potato for you.
I thought I had the cleverest name for a plague bear hunter pet, but it was restricted. Couldn’t figure out why, but it turned out an “offensive” word made up part of the name.
This is who I tried to name it after:
Yogi? yeah in the early 90’s that was a insult to call someone that I believe. If that is indeed the bears name, I’m not sure.
that is not yogi, but Boo-boo.
Weird, cant imagine boo-boo being offensive. OHHHH Cuz the words combined. I get it.
yeah, maybe Red can name one Hanna and another bear Barbera? kind of a meta joke
Why not Taterstomps?
Weird fact, with the live action version of Yogi, Justin Timberlake was approached by Hanna-Barbera if he wanted to have his own Boo-Boo show due to how well he voiced the character. Which in return made Dan Ackroyd sad cause his famous Yogi impression wasn’t good enough lol.
I once had a forced name change and I just put the same name back in and never logged in. I win, Blizzard.
Booboo was almost definitely restricted because it includes “Boob.”
To the OP, generally things like titles and honoraries are restricted (so you can’t use things like King or Queen in your name), Father/Mother may be exceptions to that rule, but Mother was probably added to the list at some point because they added a prominent character named MOTHER to the game in BfA, and they tend to restrict the names of lore characters.
Probably just this.
Pretty sure this was part of the RP Realm Naming Rules and not the general one. It’s not listed on either article right now though.
It’s absolutely a thing for all character names, go open the creator and type any word like “Lord” or “Sir” in there and check the “X,” you’ll see the restricted message.
schrodinger’s name
Ok fair enough, I was mostly thinking about the actual rules articles but that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t blocking the names regardless.
Father/Mother may be exceptions to that rule
This is Fathergreen. It seemed appropriate for a Priest. Had no issues with the name.
Maybe the system is so bad that it assumes every word starting with “mother” to be the evil cuss word? That’s the only reason I can think of unless moth is suddenly a bad word.
that is not yogi, but Boo-boo.
Damn kids.
I do yogi every time my friend and I attack a random bear in the forest in wow.
" Hey boo-boo , there are some idiot players beating me over the head…eeeAAAeeeee…"
