Thinking about name change for my main. I have a short list picked out, but if they are taking I still have to choose a new name regardless?
Create a throwaway of the name you want to be sure it’s open. Delete it before you change name and it will be open.

Suggestion, if you get a new name accepted with your throwaway, don’t log into the game. (If you do, your new name can be seen by other players and if they like it, may try to steal it)
If you logged into the game, wait a few hours or days before you delete your throwaway and delete it without logging in to the game. Then popup your main, and you have your new name available, with little chance of it being stolen.
You can reuse a characters name right away after deleting it but another player will have to wait 90 days (maybe 60) before they could use it.
Thanks for the comment, but I’ve had a couple names stolen within a minute or two.
If the deleted character is under level 30, there is no hold on the name. If the character is 30+, your bnet account will have a hold on the name for 30 days

Sorry i didn’t know there was a level involved, thanks for the info
creating an alt and naming it with new name won’t work as there will be a 3 day hold on the name. thanks for the feedback
Just wanted to pop in and say I noticed your server and that there are some name exchange/selling threads on the WRA forum, if you are having trouble getting a hold of the name you are wanting. Someone on there might have it already and are willing to give it up. So if you havent checked there yet, I would highly suggest it!
If you create a brand new toon without any boosting of any kind, you can hold onto the name until you are ready. Once a toon reaches level (30? 40? One of the two…), the name will be held on a 30 day lock. So if you want to hold onto a name, make sure its a super lowbie.
I also do this whenever I do a server transfer. 
Or if I want to server transfer but don’t want to keep my current character name.
Works like a charm.
