While I’ve never reported anyone for well, anything, I too hate dumb character and guild names. I usually just shake my head and move on though.
I tend to mouse over people though to see their names and guild names, I am always curious to associate names with the character, but when I hovered over a Tauren named Peckerhead a few days ago, it was just weird, lol. I didn’t report him though, just shook my head and moved on.
It’s even worse when the guild name, or hunter pet name is lower case, did you even try? Haha.
At the end of the day though if I hated seeing people’s names, I’d just turn off name plates and go on with my life, which I do any with them on.
This is a fair point, but I feel it’s too far away for the OP’s example.
1: Is the ability to report not within the OP’s power?
2: The ability to advocate on the forums for change, which others successfully have done in the past albeit rarely, is within the OP’s control
3: A quote I’ve heard before can apply to this situation, where more people who follow your advice might inadvertently contribute to the degradation of quality of a community such as an RP server’s; “Apathy is death, worse than death, for even a rotting corpse feeds the insects and beasts”
Fair points, and generally I’d agree with you. But the reason for my saying that is because the OP stated she spent hours of her play sessions on this. To me that went from trying to advocate for change to it being an obsession.
Ridiculous rule, laughable that it’s enforced at all.
Who determines what is appropriate for me to RP on your server, blizzard, you, generic_name_filter3000?
Is your RP to be the RPolice? If so, that’s the only way I could justify the time you’ve spent in game, and on this thread.
There are. First few times, they get name changes. After repeated offenses they get a game vacation.
Their punishments are correct. It’s a minor issue that does not need to go to immediate ban.
If you are spending literal hours reporting, the problem might be your unreasonbale expectations. I report at most a couple people per hour. It takes only a second or two to right click, report name.
Also known as, “Not my monkeys, not my zoo.”
I am curious as to what you consider to be an “abusive name”? Particularly since you think it’s so endemic.
So. Considering sharding. Are you absolutely certain these names are people on an rp server as well? Like to to servers only shard with rp servers?
Because if you have a normal realm sharding in to an rp realm then they can’t exactly help it.
I bet you were the bestest hall monitor ever.
It’s not petty. It’s part of what makes RP servers, RP servers.
There are a ton of PvP servers in Classic. WIth your attitude, why did you roll on Grobbulus if you don’t like the RP aspect?
So much self-unawareness in one post.
By the way, I have had a free name change because of a name that came directly from the name generator. I have another name that came from the name generator that could be reported in the future.
The name generator mostly creates the sort of non-name sounding names that you like to report.
I like how you completely glossed over the rest of the paragraph. Particularly this part: “There are rules and they should be enforced. If someone doesn’t like the rules then there are normal servers they can play on”. While I don’t agree with the OP, nor have I reported any names that weren’t borderline x-rated or outright swearing, if you are on an RP server, you did agree to be bound by RP naming rules. Either comply with the rules or don’t complain about the consequences.
Maybe you should just play the game and let others play theirs.
Isn’t there that RP addon that takes care of this kind of thing anyway ?
You are “sticking it to the man” though. You’re joining an RP server with no intention of RPing.
You’re like a guy taking a whiz in the ladies room. You have your own get out. The ladies room having a better “community” or a female friend being there is not an excuse. GET. OUT.
Totesmcgee is pretty incensed about it too!
How do you know what their name was? If immersion is so important to you to a point you want to police everyone else how about you report yourself for fail RP. You would have to ask them what their name is to know if it was breaking roleplay.
These types are always happy to bring the mallet of “immersion” down on others when they use trade chat and use “show other player names”… Is your character psychic? How can you hear the guy talking in trade chat in darnassus when you are in stormwind?
Name police should just shut down every form of communication aside from /say so they can immerse themselves in the antisocial silence they dream of creating.
In an RP you don’t even know anyone’s name until you’ve had an introduction. You shouldn’t be using anything from a TRP to interact with a person you haven’t been introduced to.
That said, I just ignore RP griefers and right click, then report for griefing if actionable and my guidelines for that are really more about whether the name legit belongs to a celebrity or is offensive. GMs aren’t really fond of these borderline reports. I don’t make threads or acknowledge the griefer’s existence, giving them the sad little shreds of attention they obviously crave.
For my part on this one, I don’t see any problem.
Just remember there are some RPers that are every bit as bad as the non-RPers they hate - in the opposite direction.
Heck, I’d not even bother reporting “p**drinker” or “bluesl*t”, myself. But they are disruptive.
Yup. I would never dream of using someone’s name until they told it to me.
Tuiie has a reputation for hyperbole and stupid things. I mean, not too long ago they created a thread and called themselves an RP elite. I’m not joking.
But yes, permanent ban from choosing your own name? Yeah, that’d go over real well. About as well as me deciding to ignore the cat litter for a week straight.
