Cleansing the Overlook

As per the request of the coalition, a group was sent to Highmountain in the hopes of locating the source of the corruption that was spreading around Oro’s Overlook and, hopefully, cleanse it.

The group split into two teams: one team would catch and cleanse the local wildlife population while the other worked to identify the source of the corruption. Deciding that fish were easier to catch than powerful corrupted moose, the wildlife team started with the river.

The wildlife team immediately went to work catching sickly fish from the river to test cleansing efforts. A bucket was found and filled with water and those fish that were caught by the Wolfmane were quickly tended to by various methods of cleansing.

Then, the corruption fought back!

Their minds were pierced by sharp, painful headaches and dark visions entered their thoughts. Images of a Tauren child, reaching up for help… only to be twisted and corrupted into a creature of nightmare before any could help him…

Worry and doubt gripped the group. Moving quickly to finish their mission, Ariadanne summoned a weak river spirit to question while Krahruk continued the search around the river. It was there that he found a shadowed cave between the rocks.

Pungent scents of Drogbar and void rose from the darkness within the cave. Aware that they did not have enough of a force to continue into the depths, the group turned back to rejoin their rest of the coalition with their new information.

Meanwhile…

The group searching for the source followed Faydori Starherald’s latent Void sensitivity. She indicated that a dark mist surrounded the river, and when water shaman Rinzou reached out to the spirits, he confirmed the same.

The spirits spoke of a darkness running through ethereal veins. It seeped from powerful bones deep below the earth. The group thought that the ethereal veins might be the leylines, and the bones may be the dragon that they’d seen in visions.

Suddenly, darkness shrouded their thoughts and the entire group was thrown into chaos. Strange urges lured members of the group into the depths of the river while the others tried to stop them. A fight broke out on the river bank while the darkness called to them. Rinzou was able to get the help of the river spirits to cleanse the group and they withdrew to a safe distance from the water to tend to their wounded.

With a bit more information than they had when they arrived, the group retreated back to Meredil in Suramar, unsuccessful in their attempts to heal the land of the growing corruption.

Off to Val’sharah We Go!

Upon returning to Highmountain, the group gathered in Meredil to begin preparations for their journey to Val’sharah. Loviattar divided the group into teams and assigned each one a task to complete.

One team was on defense. Fear of Meredil being attacked while the Saberguard is away spurred the Duskwatch to add extra defenses around the ruins. Wards were set by the arcanists while nature based traps were placed by the Wolfmane, all of them surrounding the entrance to Shal’aran.

The second team went into Shal'aran and packed up all the essentials that the unit would need in Val'sharah. Bandages, rations, tents and other necessities were gathered and then carried up to Meredil where they were packed onto the backs of several extra manasabers.

The third team ventured outside of Meredil to scout around the ruins. Loviattar wanted to make sure there were no enemies around that would take advantage of their departure. Unfortunately, the scouting team discovered that the forest around Shal'aran held several spiders and Fal'dorei that were silently watching. If the Fal'dorei saw them leaving, the group was certain Shal'aran would be attacked in their absence.

The group had to leave, however, and begin their journey to Val'sharah. They were to meet the Kaldorei at the Temple of Elune that night. It was decided that the group would use invisibility spells to try and hide the departure of the coalition. The Fal'dorei had seen them in force scouting the area, the coalition wanted them to keep the idea that Meredil was heavily defended.

Under cover of invisibility spells, the group then made their move. The spells were cast and they disappeared from view, allowing them to walk right past one of the sentinel spiders without ever being noticed.

That evening, the coalition arrived at the Temple of Elune where they set up their tents on the grounds to get some rest. The next day, their work would truly begin…

Date: Thursday, April 21st

Earlier in the week, the coalition gathered at the Glade Council of the Silver Circle. There, it was decided to investigate Val’sharah first. While the missing citizens from Highmountain were concerning, they decided that helping them would do no good if the cause was still roaming free. Thus, the coalition resolved to investigate the root systems of Shaladrassil.

Talanor Nightfeather had requested a map of the roots from the Dreamgrove, and in a week’s time, it had arrived. The coalition met to review their first would-be clue.

They decided to track back from the last known root actively transmitting corruption: one that pushed through the ground in Suramar. The closest root on the map was that springing through the dread forest surrounding Andu’talah.

The group set off for the ruins, but a strange sight quickly caught their attention. At the first fork past the Temple of Elune, they spotted figures shambling up the path. They appeared as though they were injured druids. However, the injured party was met with suspicion. With Void magic rampant, and satyrs about, they could be deceived. Chief Medical Officer of the Duskwatch, Ariadanne Maravre, and Elder of the Wild for the Silver Circle, Kelanthos Ivyfang, both cautiously approached. After some inspection - and a quick haircut -, they determined that the druids were telling the truth.

Immediately, healers were called forward. As they tried to revive the druids, their leader - Tular Leafspear - spoke to Kelanthos. He explained that they had been attacked by satyrs coming from the Grove of Cenarius, and that the satyrs had stolen a few Petals of Cenarius from them. Unfortunately, despite the healers best efforts, one of the druids, Felneth Bluewind, was too far gone, and passed away.

After a short prayer was performed over his body, it was returned to the temple while the others advanced to Andu’talah. Once they arrived, they began inspecting the roots: two approximately twenty feet in diameter, stretching on for miles in either direction. Some noticed totems set up along the root, empowering the dark energies in it.

However, while they inspected the roots, a satyr materialized from the shadows and nearly gored one of the members. Arcane runes were etched on his skin, and he quickly revealed that he was deGontaut - the traitor Duskwatch now turned fully to Darkness. More satyrs joined his attack, as did a Nightmarish fiend, and, surprisingly, two tauren of the Highmountain tribe. However, their horns glowed bright with the red energies of the Nightmare, and thorns protruded from their bodies.

Combat ensured. deGontaut escaped, but the rest were quickly dispatched. However, the group suspected that the tauren may actually be captured citizens, corrupted against their will. One was, unfortunately, killed, but the other - a woman whose name was not made known - was frozen in a block of ice by arcanist Chise Laframoise. The tauren was dethawed and quickly bound to be taken back to the temple in the hopes of treating her.

Meanwhile, the arcanists and druids of the group inspected the root. There, they found that it had been warded against magical attacks. Too large to cut, and impervious to fire, they had to retreat. However, Kelanthos and Andrinn “Snowy” Nightshadow worked together to trace the wards back to Moonclaw and Shala’nir.

Now, the group must venture to those locations and break the wards, so they can cut the root and end the corruption.

Location: Moonclaw Vale, Val’sharah
Date: Thursday, April 28th

Having identified Shalanir and Moonclaw Vale as the source of the wards protecting the root of Shaladrassil corrupting Suramar, the coalition mustered their forces to destroy the protective spells. Shalanir rest under the trunk of Shaladrassil, so Moonclaw was a far easier target with which to start.

After a few questions, they made way for the village and arrived shortly. Lead by first Blade Corvin Devereaux, the group found it empty, abandoned and desolate, as it had been for years. A single root of Shaladrassil arched over the village, Unnervingly so. Yet, the mind played tricks on their eyes. Vines and leaves moved without wind. Heat wrinkled the air, though it was temperate.

They stepped into the abandoned village, rotting from misuse. Eyes open and wary, their magical users scried something of interest: there was an mist of Void magics as one might expect, but also two points of arcane magic that were identical. One occupied the space just over a nearby pavilion, while the other sat in a cave across a river.

While they scried and prepared their defenses, several were bitten by a sudden pox of flame. When they looked down, they found fat ants - black with red markings - marching over their bodies and biting them. While the sting hurt, they soon found more than that. Little black speck which, after only a few minutes, erupted up through their skin as thick thorns. However, some could see the insects, others couldn’t. The altered perception lead to disagreement: was this a threat, or just an illusion?

More and more of them were bitten, an enemy coming from the ground that they couldn’t fight. Many tried to climb the pavilion and destroy a crescent ornament crowning the structure. However, the roof was weak, and many fell through. Finally, rather than cross, Muratani threw her life at it, cutting through the weak wood.

However, the battle wasn’t over. While Ozark, Bramblefang, and others tried to shove the entire structure to the ground, more fell to the insects. While destroying the crescent had weakened the ward, it wasn’t gone. Worst yet, it was regenerating. Recalling the other point of magic across the river, First Occulus Rhai and Elder Kelanthos Ivyfang lead the group to a cave in the northwest pocket of the village.

Therein, they found a troll man attached to a satyr totem with long, thorned vines that grew from his skin. They asked him just enough to vet that he wasn’t some trick: he was captured by some owlkin, working with a Thalassian woman who placed dark magic upon him. The second half of the ward lie within him, and if they didn’t destroy it quickly, the other half would regenerate, and they’d be back at square one.

As they discussed how to cure him, a shadow weighed upon their minds. They found themselves slowly lured into a sleep. Thus, the healers acted quickly. Maybe they could heal him. Druids and priestesses worked in tandem to cleanse his body. While the healing eased his pain, it did not dispel the ward placed within him. Just as it was looking they might have to decide between the tormented man’s life and the ward, Unre Paleflame - a spellblade - stepped forward. Through a miracle, they picked through the dark magic and found the magical weavings of the ward, and cut through it with expert precision just before the other half could regenerate.

With both sides disabled, the group pulled the troll from the totem and retreated to the temple to cut the thorns from themselves.

With one ward down, the coalition turned their attention to the second. A few days prior, they had snuck into Shala’nir and placed a telemacy beacon at a dilapidated house close to the target. The objective was to teleport into Shala’nir, beeline for the ward, and destroy the vessel anchoring the spell.

However, before they departed, they realized they were missing three of their combat healers, who had vanished with only a vague note. Worried that they had fallen to the whispers, as had deGontaut before them, the coalition deliberated their next steps amongst themselves. If the missing Saberguard were held captive, they had a very short time to rescue them. However, the longer they waited, the more time the corrupted root would have to spread its taint to the Broken Isles. But, all the while, they were missing combat healers, and Shala’nir would certainly be dangerous.

Ultimately, they determined that they had no idea as to where to search for their allies, and they couldn’t allow the corruption to grow worse. So, they decided to execute as quick a strike against Shala’nir’s ward as they could manage.

They teleported into the corrupted village, and quickly assumed a defensive formation around their healers. The group’s gaze peered upon bulky, misshapen figures an acrid haze that choked the lungs. The creatures formed a perimeter around a lake, from which thorned vines emerged, wrapped around a dimly glowing crystal. Still, the group charged in, engaging the beasts.

Fur was stained black and flecked with red, the figures were Highmountain tauren with strange, tumorous growths and thorns growing from their bodies. As the group fought them, First Oculus Rhai and First Glaive Kyndora snuck around, finding an open spot in their flanks. They teleported across the lake, finding themselves on the vines rising from the water. However, before they could destroy the crystal, the vines lept to action, dropping them into the lake. To their horror, they found the lake was not composed of water, but a strong acid that began to chew away at their flesh.

“Bat!” A shrill voice cried out, as a large creature with four wings swooped overhead. It enveloped itself in black smoke, and reformed into a Thalassian woman. Her body was covered in black robes. An extra pair of arms grew from her torso, as did eyes from her forehead. She cackled and attacked the healers, pulling them away from the melee fighters engaging the tauren. The fighters recognized her quickly: Veladrin Arcanetrail, a lieutenant of the Scourge during their resurgence last year.

A few tauren were dispatched, and the fighters noticed something strange: umbilical cords stretching from the water below. Vines erupted from the water, wrapping around the warriors and dragging them into the acidic liquid. While under, Kelanthos noticed an eye sprouting from the soft, pink walls of the lake. Dartonas was pulled to the very bottom before he could react. Murtani and Loviattar lept in to save him, only to find mutated tauren grabbing the Shal’dorei Beast by his throat and pulling him into some sort of Maw.

They resurfaced for air just in time for Krahruk Barkhide to cannonbear Veladrin. She slipped from underneath him, summoned a few more bats to deal with the heroes, and escaped. Kyndora pulled Rhai from the acidic lake, and they smashed the crystalline ward in twain. A few more tauren mutants were fallen, and more were approaching, but the group fled back to the Temple of Elune before they could be overwhelmed.

There, they found the “missing” combat healers, who opted to abandon their posts for different, critical business. As is her tradition of punching smug elves, Loviattar cracked Chief Medical Officer Ariadanne’s nose with a furious punch, while the healers endeavored to create healing vapors for their scarred lungs.

:spider: Nightmare on Arcan’dor Street :spider:

With the final ward destroyed, the coalition gathered at the Temple of Elune to complete what they hoped would be the final task: destroy the root that was funneling nightmare magic into Suramar.

Together they rode to Andu’talah where the massive, twisted root loomed and began their difficult task of destroying it. Fear of an ambush kept the group on edge and their senses outward as the first spells were unleashed.

It was then that they heard it: skittering in the dark shadows of the forest and the sounds of many legs moving around them. Suddenly several Fal’dorei appeared on the root above them, each one moving perfectly in time with the others as they began to cast a spell…

Despite efforts to stop the Fal’dorei, the spell was cast and the entire coalition collapsed into unconsciousness at the base of Shaladrassil’s root.

They woke up, however, at the Temple of Fal’adora in Suramar. Confusion set in as they got their bearings… and that is when it hit. Shaking and trembling, clawing at their arms and jaws and a miserable, powerful hunger. They were withering.

The group didn’t have time to fully figure out what was happening as sudden sounds of a fight drifted up from the depths of the temple. They rushed inside and discovered Shal’dorei civilians being cut down by Duskwatch. Duskwatch that bore the same faces as those within their own group.

They assisted the civilians, taking out the Duskwatch and saving a Priestess of Elune and her followers from certain death. This priestess, Vess’tra, bid the group to follow her to the other exiles and started to lead the group further into the depths of Falanaar.

There in the depths of the Temple, deep in Falanaar, the group figured out they were part of a memory. They were seeing and experiencing how the Fal’dorei had been created. Some tried to flee, others planned to attack and stop it, and some watched realizing it had already happened.

As Valewalker Farodin arrived and the creation of an Arcan’dor began, Vess’tra was suddenly attacked by members of the group. The Arcan’dor began to lose stability and as it exploded, the entire group felt the pain and horror as their bodies twisted and changed, as they became rewritten into horrible spider entities…

And then they woke up back in Val’sharah, the Fal’dorei that had sent them into the horrible nightmare gone.

:scroll: Coalition Council Meeting :scroll:

With the active root from Shaladrassil destroyed, Nightmare is no longer flowing into Suramar. However it’s clear that the Fal’dorei are up to something in the deep places below Falanaar.

At the same time, the coalition was receiving disturbing reports of how bad the situation was getting in Highmountain. Entire villages are missing and a shadow flying on night’s wings keeps the Highmountain Tauren barricaded in their homes or in Thunder Totem.

The group needed to make a decision on where their attention should be turned and they needed to make this decision fast for lives were definitely hanging in the balance.

Meeting in the Temple of Elune for the last time, the group laid out all the clues they had gathered before making their decision:

  • The Fal’dorei had stolen arcfruit from Suramar, Petals of Cenarius from Val’sharah, and captured Valewalker Farodin.

  • Nightmare was slowly corrupting the leylines below Suramar from a nightmare root that had plunged deep into Falanaar.

  • The Highmountain were being captured by Drogbar and twisted into horrific Nightmare Tauren. Accounts say a Fal’dorei was assisting or at least overseeing the entire corruption process.

After a discussion, the group came to the conclusion that the Fal’dorei might be trying to grow a Nightmare Arcan’dor in the tunnels and ruins below Suramar. Despite this revelation, the vote was cast and saving Highmountain’s tormented people won by a large majority.

What this means for Suramar, no one knows…

For now the coalition is packing up and heading to Highmountain!

:mountain_snow: “We are Highmountain.” :mountain_snow:

After days of travel, the coalition arrived in a village perched at the highest peaks of Highmountain: Ironhorn Enclave. When they arrived, the village was hard at work with the day’s labors. Two of the workers approached them, offering greetings and asking for their intentions. As the members explained, the villagers brought out a large dinner, and invited the guests to join them.

The coalition sat down for dinner, and others from the village joined them. The villagers spoke in simple phrases, often referring to themselves in the collective first person. Something was amiss, but welcomes are rare in this business.

Dinner was finished shortly enough, and the coalition made camp for the night. As they took to their tents, they fell into an uneasy sleep. Fevers Haunted their disjointed dreams. They awoke some hours later to a screaming owl.

As they took tally, it quickly became apparent: many of their forces were missing. Within moments, they spotted the procession of Highmountain flesh fiends marching up the hill with several of their still-sleeping comrades in arm. The food had been drugged.

The heroes rushed into action, only for a gargantuan figure to leap before them, scattering the snow as it ran them through with its spear. It was covered in tendrils, eyes, and dark plate. The creature roared and pushed the attack.

Several coalition members escaped the barricade. The kidnapped members began to rouse themselves, thrashing for freedom. Their rescuers descended upon them, loosing them from the grasps of the mutants. As the battle progressed, many noticed fleshy tendrils extending from the beasts’ spines.

Both sides fought fiercely, but as coalition members started to wake and join the fight, the forces of the Void fell! Even the titanic beast protecting the theives was trapped in a mass of roots.

Subduing him as quickly as they could, healers began the process of attempting to purge the corruption. Meanwhile, scouts pushed ahead, following the tendrils to a series of nearby caves. Those would need to be investigated next.

After purging the corruption in Ironhorn Enclave, the coalition came together to discuss the situation in Highmountain and the possibility of gaining allies in the fight against the void. Several different tribes lived in the area, each with their own strengths to possibly add to the fight.

However the Skyhorn, Bloodtotem and Prepfoots had gone silent.

The coalition traveled to the closest of the three, Skyhorn, to scout the area and hopefully make contact with the tribe. Concerns were running high since several members of the coalition had family with the Skyhorn and Bloodtotems.

Upon arriving on the outskirts of the village, the group instantly realized that something was wrong. Void corruption was creeping below the surface, the leylines tainted, and strange fleshy amalgamations were slithering and creeping around the homes. The villagers were nowhere to be found.

The heroes charged into the village to kill the nightmare amalgamations but as each one died, they exploded into a mass of worms to slither away. It was during this battle that several of the group noticed a barricaded cave in the mountainside. Several amalgamations were attempting to break through.

They hurried down to the cave and killed the amalgamations, discovering the missing civilians had blocked themselves inside the mountain. Before the group could ask, the reason suddenly became clear. A roar echoed through the valley and suddenly the group found themselves in the path of a nightmare dragon’s breath.

The dragon swept over the coalition but as the group braced for fire or lightning… instead they found the dragon’s breath laced with acid and more of the horrific, creepy worms. The worms swarmed the group, crawled over them and burrowed under their skin and into their flesh… moving upwards toward each hero’s brain.

As the dragon flew off, Priestess Lyastei called upon the power of Elune to cleanse the worms from the ailing group. They rescued the Skyhorn villagers, sent a scout to check on the path to the Prepfoots and then returned to Ironhorn Enclave to plan their next move.

When the coalition had been greeted and treated to a poisoned feast by the corrupted Ironhorn several days ago, they noticed that their near mindless attackers all had a strange fleshy tendril that attached at the base of their skulls.

After the corrupted Ironhorn were defeated, several scouts followed the trail of these tendrils as they slithered back to wherever they came from. It was discovered they originated in a cave below the Ironhorn Enclave.

The group decided to head into the suspicious cave and figure out what was happening in the deep places of Highmountain.

At the entrance of the cave, the group met several Drogbar guards. Considering Loviattar took them the most visible way into the valley as was elvenly possible… the guards instantly saw the group approach.

After some diplomacy with the suspicious Drogbar and despite the very vocal Loviattar trying to explain that this was clearly a trap, the group agreed to lay down their weapons and head into the cave to peacefully speak with the Drogbar on their concerns.

Some of the coalition, led by First Oculus Rhai, decided to stay outside and guard the weapons.

“It’s a trap!”

As the weaponless group was escorted into the depths of the mountain, the Drogbar led them to a bridge over a chasm. While the group was crossing the bridge, the Drogbar cut the ropes and the team plummeted to a shallow pool below.

A pool they very quickly discovered was an acid instead of water.

Vile, rank flesh crept up the walls of the cave, some parts of it moving and as the group stood… the ground beneath the shallow acid was spongy. A humid, putrid gas hung heavy in the air and made vision difficult. Disgusted, they rushed to shore only to be attacked by Drogbar that emerged from the haze!

Meanwhile, the group outside were attacked by the cave guards but despite the Drogbar’s best efforts… Rhai’s team were able to land a decisive victory against them. The timely arrival of Unre on their hippogryph allowed the outside team to quickly fly the weapons into the large cavernous cave.

With their weapons in hand, the coalition was able to turn the tide of the battle!

The drogbar were pushed back and the heroes were able to save several Highmountain civilians that were in the process of being corrupted. The group also were able to rescue several Fal’dorei that seemed cooperative and almost friendly, something that was definitely odd for the ‘monsters’ as some Shal’dorei and Farodin often called them.

Not wanting to stay in the fleshy pit any longer, the group grabbed the civilians and let the Fal’dorei skitter off before they fled the cave themselves. As everyone moved to a safe distance… several of the group set the cave on fire in the hopes of destroying the Flesh Pit.

The coalition met in Ironhorn Enclave to discuss the information gathered from last week’s venture into the Drogbar caves north of their camp. The tauren, Defa, whom they had rescued in Val’sharah passed out hot stew and bread for the hungry group to eat while they made plans.

However, just as dinner began, their minds were assaulted with disturbing images and whispers. Even those that did not eat found themselves seeing and hearing things.

Those with a strong connection to Elune tried to call upon Her power, but she did not answer. Void-mutated entities, rats and spiders and all manner of vermin, swarmed the group. As they fought the creatures, they had to fight off encroaching hallucinations.

Eventually, the final creature fell, but their vision blurred! They fell unconscious and awoke in a tangled cavern of red and black vines. Not only was the coalition here but a resident of Duskwood awoke in the Nightmare as well!

Their confusion as to how and why the Duskwood resident was there was suddenly interrupted as they moved further into the Nightmare twisted cavern, to a place where it expanded into a massive clearing…

…only to find a rotting dragon asleep in the center. As they approached, they noticed a fal’dorei roosting just overhead, trying to stay out of sight.

The heroes engaged the fal’dorei, but the dragon sprang to life! It spewed vile breath, and their vision twisted. However, eventually, both the mutant elf and the corrupted drake fell.

Still yet, the heroes felt their vision blur once more. And then, they roused in their beds in Ironhorn Enclave and Duskwood. Each one found a strange bite on them, that of a spider.

It would seem as though the villains had hallucinogenic arachnids and those arachnids were no longer contained within the Broken Isles. They were spreading and had apparently reached Duskwood.

Where else in Azeroth had they spread to?

The heroes prepared to keep an eye out for them and search for whatever might be controlling the creatures as their campaign against the Nightmare continues…
