:jamaica: Music History :jamaica:

Jamaican folk music called Mento emerged in the 1940s and 1950s. Mento strongly influenced the birth of Ska and Rocksteady in Jamaican during the the late 50s into the 60s respectively. The two genres developed into Reggae during the late 60s and became known for its limitless flexibility. In 1965, Bob Marley and the Wailers released their debut studio album The Wailing Wailers. The album contained the single “One Love/People Get Ready”, the song was popular worldwide and established the group as rising figure in reggae. In 1968, the following records were released and considered legends in reggae: “Nanny Goat” by Larry Marshall, “Do the Reggay” by Toots and the Maytals, “No More Heartaches” by The Beltones.

In the 1970s, Dancehall was born and became a more sparse version of Reggae than the roots style which dominated the Jamaican music scene. In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital Dancehall becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. Key elements of dancehall music include its extensive use of Jamaican Patois rather than Jamaican standard English and a focus on the track instrumentals (or “riddims”). The popularity of Dancehall has spawned dance moves that help to make parties and stage performances more energetic. Many dance moves seen in Hip Hop videos are actually variations of Dancehall dances.

I think that sharding is still active in BfA zones until the patch goes live even on RP servers, unless I’m mistaken? Unless the patch is hitting in the last week of August, that might potentially pose a problem. Either way, the history snippet was pretty awesome. I actually remember reading about that in a Reggae history article when I was helping my fiancé write an article about Jamaica’s modern history.

Good luck with your event!

It should be. As far as I know, sharding on RP servers within zones gets turned off when that zone becomes “legacy content.” So when pre-patch hits in a month and 9.0.1 is applied, sharding in Boralus, Zuldazar and the BfA zones should be turned off for RP.

9.0.1 (pre-patch) sounds like the most likely point to do that.

Regardless, best of luck with the event. I might drop by if I can make the time for it.

Thanks for the heads up on that! I will look into the sharding to make sure everything is good on that front.

Glad you all liked the history snippet, I felt it was important to highlight the culture and how it came to be. I will be posting fun facts during the week as well. :woman_cartwheeling:t6:

Hey, hey! This looks like a wonderful way to have a fun time and delve into beautiful music! Lots of dancing, song, and RP, what more can be asked?

Try to open up a GM ticket! (use one of the unrelated categories in their silly new interface to manually write one up, because they no longer let you just open, write, and send, pooey) and usually they’re really helpful on clarifying how certain server tech works when you tell them it’s for an RP event. When I ran the TTT I used to do that to ask about how phasing and sharding would work if a large number of people showed up in specific areas.

I sent in the ticket and I’m waiting to hear back now. Thank you for the help with that Zogdor! Good to know they will respond about questions concerning the rp community. :blue_heart:

:jamaica: Riddim History: Some say reggae came about partly by accident when reverb on an amp coincidentally mimicked the chord on the offbeat. It sounded great and the rest is history :musical_score:

Hoping they can give you an answer, or if not themselves find someone who can! The last time I asked a GM about this sort of thing was about 2 years ago, but it was in regards to the BfA rules about sharding and legacy content classification. If they don’t give a direct answer, I know some ways to get some clarification and will see what I can do about getting a fast, direct answer for you.

Again, I really appreciate this help Zogdor as this sharding situation is tricky. I got a response from a Technical GM who stated that sharding is dynamic and could not say for sure if it would or wouldn’t affect the area. They stated not having the specific numbers to provide what kind of density of players could trigger this.

Do you have experience with hosting anything in places where this could happen? And if so, what kind of density caused the phasing/sharding to happen?

We had this happen one time in the Jade Forest during an event a few years back. Supposedly, this was before the hotfix on sharding on RP servers that was triggered by the Tournament of Ages event. That said, we were doing a performance for an audience of roughly 80 people, and suddenly half the audience vanished, and some others zoned in that I hadn’t seen prior.

About a week later, the Tournament of Ages happened and the same thing happened to them, only Blizzard actually helped after it went viral over twitter, then a hotfix came in soon after. This was during Legion, I believe, so sharding was still brand new at the time, but yeah. Numbers of an upwards of 50-60 seem to trigger it in my experience.

It doesn’t appear to be possible anymore, though, and at the time, Jade Forest was considered Legacy. I’ll see if I can get a hold of someone who might have better insight for you, and I’ll send you an in-game mail if they send me a reply.

In the meantime, it never hurts to have a backup location in mind, as well as a protocol for quick adjustment of location for at least the first 30 minutes of an event while people are arriving and zoning in. Things like having multiple people ready to make announcements in general chat, in trade, etc. about any sort of locational adjustments that need to be made, and to answer whispers of confused people, etc. We had to relocate our event to the Ruins of Lordaeron, but we did so in a very sloppy way, and some folks were left out in the confusion. In the future we made sure to keep an eye on stuff like that, even after the hotfix just in case something ever broke.

Now…hey I know I’m from Moon Guard…BUT this is a cool event! Bump for Epicness!

Yeah, I’ve been to events where that happens briefly before some kind of magic fixed it. I have a place in mind as the back up just in case of anything and will be posting it here with the Alliance WRA anchor for the MG folks. Between them and I, we will get things all squared away if the phasing/sharding decides to attack and move to the new place. Thanks for the advice on this! It has been very insightful and helpful for the process of hosting an event in a ‘newer’ area. When I did the Future Funk Fortune Festival, we didn’t have any issues with phasing but it was also Suramar which is older content now. I’ll keep an eye out for your letter. :blue_heart:

Hey, hey, I’m gonna be serving drinks for the first hour. I want to say that Xepher has been working hard to coordinate all of this, and it’s gonna be an awesome time! Be on the lookout for a small Vulpera serving refreshments both in and out of a barrel.

Hey Xepher, just updating you that I haven’t heard back from my contact yet. I apologize in advance, cuz I’m not sure if they still even use the account I use to contact them. That said it looks like you have a good plan. If things change I will let you know what they said.

Its all good if they don’t get back to you, I appreciate you reaching out to see for me. With your advice, I think we have a pretty solid plan in case of anything going haywire. :upside_down_face:
