So I want to start tanking Mythics, but I feel like with 9.1 coming soon I might as well just wait as any gear I get will be overshadowed in a month or less.

Well you might as well start now to learn the routes as well as gearing up for 9.1.
The thing that scares me the most is players expecting me to know the maze in Mists. I’ve watched videos and think I understand it, but no, I always choose the wrong damn door.

From what I’ve seen/done in pugs, you make your most mobile ranged dps do it. Usually as a healer, I assume this is my responsibility. The tank has enough to do.

The first one if you can see which direction she runs, that’s the correct one. For the others it’s 4 circle, none circle, filled, non filled, leaf or flower, Just have to find the one that is unique to all of them. And usually each group has at least 1 person who knows how to do it. Generally I find healers mostly take care of it.

I don’t have a crystal ball or anything, but I think we’re looking at mid to end of June.
Wait for 9.3
Start your own group and make sure to list it, or at least let people know, that you are learning to tank these dungeons and that these runs will be learning groups and you won’t have any issues. Don’t pretend like you know what you’re doing or you’ll be in for a rough time.

If it helps any, there is actually addons that can help you get through the maze if you have trouble with it. Mazehelper is one, a little box pops up when you get to the maze and it has all the options that you can get inside of it. You simply left click all the ones you see and it will tell you which one is the way to go through.
I would start now in low keys learning the routes and all the trash and boss mechanics.
Getting comfortable with all the trash and boss mechanics now will help a lot for next season.
There is also a Weak Aura you can get from Wago .io if you use the WA addon.
ALSO, no need to be scared of people, its a video game who cares if they rage at you lol.
Being a Marine does not mean liking being abused, it just means we’re more likely to be able to take it and still function at 100%. Or, at least myself and the Marines I served with could. I can’t speak for modern Marines however as I retired many years ago.

The better your gear is, the quicker you will be able to get a jump start in the next season. You don’t want to be going into the season trying to find groups while still being vastly lower ilvl then other players applying for the same spot.
It is easy as a tank to get geared up right now.

Better late than never. I would start now.
Also, there are smart nerds who show optimal routes depending on the week/affixes to help with your route. ( i.e. mythic dungeon tools)
Tanks have it the hardest imo. (I mostly heal/tank). You’re expected to know the dungeon inside and out, best route, keeping the pace, ect. ect. ect. (ect!)
Most importantly, I hope you have fun.
