Those of you that push mythic plus, how do you prepare for an expansion? Do you go into it with 5 alts? How do you choose them?
My friends and I are going to push as high as we can go. I’d like to pick a different class.
This may be the wrong way to think but I feel a different class would do me good. I played boomie in 8.3. I did well. I could do enough dps for 16s. I look at logs and people were doing double my dps. The dps different amongst the top specs showed some specs were just better. Take bm hunter vs boomie. Hunters were just doing more damage.
I did everything I could as boomie. Review logs, sim my toon, chase gear, and so on. Other specs in my group were just pumping out more damage. I’m not a bad player but I just feel that I could pick a better performing spec and perform better myself.
Anyway, my main question really is: how do you go into shadowlands?
If you are choosing a class and your main goal is to push m+, then id suggest looking into FoTm classes. M+ meta will be largely unchanged from S4 BFA due to the nature of how the dungeons are setup in SL.
SL is extremely melee unfriendly in both m+ and raid. A lot of mechanics in SL keys that just don’t allow for melee to be in those pulls for long periods of time, whether that be large scale npc AOE abilities, or affixes that in higher keys will insta nuke melee if they aren’t careful or have aoe cc chains readily available.
Rogue right now is really the only melee with a good standing for keys, mostly based on toolkit. All melee right now are fairly close in damage, but rogues toolkit just is so suited to keys its a no brainer.
If you want to play ranged you’ll want to look into hunter or mage as your top choices. Both have great cc, mobility, and bring some added utility like hunter MD, traps, mage slows, lust, etc.
If you want to game mythic plus, just keep up with FoTm classes. The meta does change as expansions go on, classes get nerfed or buffed, covenants will inevitably go through changes. But you’ll always be safe with rogue, that’s the one constant really for M+ if you want to dps.
I just play one single spec, retribution, and have gotten to know it so well that I can figure out how to make it work regardless of what situation I end up in. Lots of people have the idea in their heads that they need to play the optimal class/spec for hard content, but there is definitely a comfortable bit of room up there where exceptional players of any class/spec can perform well.
I have no doubt this is true. There are players that are just that good, they can make anything work.
But in all honesty I don’t think there are that many of those level of players. Most of us need to rely a little more heavily on FotM specs like Envyx says to be able to push our own personal best.
Like myself. I don’t even do higher end content, but the lower end stuff I do I can usually hold my own. Mostly because I’m playing an OP spec like BM or Fire. If I were to play something more challenging I’d be at the bottom looking up at the tank.
I’ve played at the highest level of the game, and one thing that surprised me is how many players I saw in the game who would be capable with the right team and the shared desire for it. While I certainly don’t want to suggest that anyone who enjoys switching classes is doing anything wrong, I would argue that sticking with one and learning all of it’s nuances is actually the easier rout to reach those levels in the long run.
Beats last boss of the game and still has the “super potion” that I’ve saved because I might need it even though I’ve died 92 times since picking it up
You should play something that you feel like you will be ok playing the entire season. As long as your group has synergy and you all know what you are doing, that’s all you need to go pretty far. Just be sure you pick something you like.
I mean its not like this is going to be a ranged expansion. They will balance things out when enough casual rogues and warriors just get eaten alive and the forums become littered with tears
I begin a m+ push by swapping into tank spec and telling the group to hold on, it’s going to be a fun ride.
Seriously though this beta cycle has been a rollercoaster on what class I was even going to play. So many buffs then nerfs then buffs to the same specs, reworking others and reverting one. Very little dev communication on what was coming to some specs if anything.
I’ve finally made my decision as of this week, and if they do a last minute change that messes that plan up, I will go to my 2nd toon in line.
All you can do with the way things are balanced
I put a ton of effort into my boomie trying to increase my output all of 8.3. Best I did was 66k overall and that’s only because VOP procced every time we entered combat. I mean, if we look at logs, bm hunter was pumping out more damage than boomie. There is def merit in playing a spec that can output more. Plus, bm hunter is just easier. That’s how I see it.
