Mythic + noob

Hello everyone
I main a prot pally. I’ve been tanking a lot in delves and I’m enjoying myself and learning a lot about my class. When to use cool downs when to use defensive and all that jazz. I want to start getting into mythic + duns but I’m a little nervous. Tanks control the flow of the dungeon and with mythic + duns being timed I’m a little nervous about not making that time. What’s a good starting point to start learning the duns without pressure? Also any guilds/communities you can provide me that is willing to help out would be greatly appreciated. I play on illidan.

Mythics 0, start there, the loot is not good but you can feel some difficulty in those dungeons, and you can ask other players where to go so you can understand some routes.

  1. Make sure you follow routes https://raider.io/weekly-routes. Those can be imported in an addon called Mythic Dungeon Tool known as MDT.
  2. Know the boss fights
  3. Don’t invite bad players, install the Raider IO addon so you can get more data on whoever is applying to your key, you can see their main’s IO, highest key they’ve timed, the goal here is to get carried by people who know what they are doing.
  4. Be ready to get flamed in chat but power through it
  5. Don’t be upset when people leave the keys, just brush it off and move on to the next key.

When you do start, I’d recommend making your own group and listing it as completion run with a note in the title about new tank. It will help set expectations so hopefully you don’t get the nutjobs who bail on a +2 if they don’t like your pace.

Starting off you really don’t need any fancy routes or special pulls to time a +2. You can just follow the obvious path pack by pack and it will be fine.

i’ll echo others:

-start with m0
-get familiar with the raider io site. review the routes.
-you can do follower dungeons for half of them. the other half, you have to go to them in the original content and run them yourself. you’ll blow them up, but the point is to recognize the mobs and the packs to get to know the route

if you are really new to tanking, do the m0 thing for a bit. as you get comfortable with a dungeon, start pushing yourself to make bigger pulls (paying attention to mobs that stun, fear, etc.) but just learn to push yourself. M+ players expect the group to move along and you are dealing with a timer…

also, enchant your gear and fill your gem slots. You are ilevel appropriate for getting started in m+ but every little bit helps.

and you will run into people who will look at lack of enchants and/or empty gem slots and they will kick you or leave.

but also recognize that even though m+ groups are generally starved for tanks, the player base is simultaneously completely impatient with tanks. be patient with yourself.

let people know you early that you are new and learning the role. it could save problems later in the run. some people will help you but if someone is going to be a butt, they will probably do it as soon as you tell them. better to know early and not waste time and get super frustrated.

m0s

Learn the dungeon layout - learn the trash mechanics - learn boss mechanics.
If you want to see how m+ runs are like so you have an idea, try them on a DPS in a +2 where your role is a tad more forgiving

Everyone here has good recommendations for sure.

The only thing I would add is don’t talk yourself out of specific dungeons because of particular boss fights or hard pulls you might want to do. I found myself doing that and all it did was make me feel i couldn’t overcome it before I even started. I was just building it up in my head but once I started doing them all regularly I realized that no matter the situation there is a way through it. Like not being afraid to fail. If you learn from a mistake it’s not a failure but rather a lesson to take forward. You got this

First of all…don’t be. I’ve done all the dungeons on at least +13, I am probably above average for prot pallies. I rarely bother to even look at the timer. I mean what’s the point? You can only go as fast as you can go, if I pull the dungeon clean and my route is good and I am getting all the interrupts with avengers shield so nobody dies while also doing good damage it’s not my fault if the key doesn’t get timed.

Second of all…sometimes it WILL be your fault, and that’s okay too. Tanking is hard this season, and if you miss a defensive you are going to explode and the group will wipe, or if you have a bad route, or position the boss in a dumb way, so prepare yourself mentally to be the cause of some bricked keys. When this happens, I do my best to correct the problem in my next key, whether it be improving the route or my positioning of bosses or whatever.

Lastly, a lot of times a key will brick when it was someone else’s fault, and you as the tank will get blamed. When this happens just ignore the person and move on with your life.

Just list your own key and say in the dungeon description that you are learning. It might take a bit longer to fill but you will actually find people willing to help and teach you stuff. Also if you screw up it feels less bad to brick my own key than when I brick someone elses.

Google him, watch his YouTube videos, he has in depth guides on everything where he goes through his dungeon runs and talks about when and why he is pressing Sacred Weapons for every single use. He also has routes for every single dungeon etc.

OP, come back and give us a situation report if you don’t mind.

I want to start tanking M+ also, just not sure where to start at this point.

If anyone wants to start m+ tanking but wants to run it as DPS first to see what it’s like or have a DPS be able to point you in the right direction:

Delves are good for training. You can do them alone, and you can learn the ins and outs of your spec. With Brann as a healer, he’ll help fix a mistake if you make it. I was always scared to tank, but once I knocked out a few Delves on my own, it was actually pretty easy.

The dungeon layouts, M0 would be best I suppose, or being DPS on them.

Find a dungeon cheat sheet for the season.

Hit the tank training dummy so you can actually practice using active mitigation.

Then hit the AOE dummies to practice pumping numbers. It’s that simple really. The rest will come with practice.

Get gear to like 606 then just start queuing for +2. This is after you’ve done the other homework. Oh I wouldn’t wait for Heroic pieces to be enchating also, definitely enchant Champ pieces, you will have them long enough unless you’re actually anticipating an upgrade.

There is a YouTube content creator named Quazii who does amazing masterclass / dungeon guides for all the mythic dungeons currently in rotation. He goes over routes and mob abilities as well as boss strats and common things expected in pugs / how to make pug’ing slightly easier.

I personally love video formats - and I love Quazii’s videos. Binge them at the start of each season <3

Yeah Quazii is probably the go to video guide person if I’m not just looking at a cheat sheet.

Cheat sheets tend to be jpegs infographics that people make that just highlights the main mechanics to watch for, if people dunno what I’m talking about.

The other biggest thing - is find friends / guild mates / discord communities who are open and willing to help you as you figure it out.

When I learned how to tank, my spouse was my pocket healer (whose a long time tank). They took me through everything and was there to provide tips and tricks when needed. I legit would prob not be comfortable tanking without that support <3

Tanking in M+ is hard. Find a group of people you can learn with. Pugs can be really toxic. People flipping out on strangers is stupid imho but it happens. Try to learn with people you know.

If you become even average you’ll become popular. That’s a huge plus.

Download 100 addons. Mess up something minor that wipes your group then blame the healer and dip out.

Strictly learning the dungeons, it’s heroic. Then you steadily raise the bar.

Biggest noob learning curve is definitely going to be pull sizes. Just wait for the pack to reach 50% hp then pull the next. If the DPS aren’t complete mouth breathers that should be adequate.

Just pull pack by back, the timer doesn’t matter until really high end keys
