I have never done Mythic+ and want to be sure I understand this system:

  1. Do Mythic 0
  2. Get keystone
  3. Upgrade keystone by beating timers at higher difficulties

But can someone explain how the keystones function? Do you just get it once for an expansion? Does it stay upgraded indefinitely if you do not use it? I saw that it gets downgraded if you miss a timer, but does that apply to all levels of Mythic+?

You get a new key every week. You can speak to the broker NPC in Oribos (standing next to the one who gives weekly quests) to get one without having to run a mythic dungeon.

Every week the key will be at the level of your highest completed key from the previous week (regardless if you timed it or not). If you didn’t run any M+ that week, it will be one level lower, and keep depleting down until it’s just a +2 again.

I don’t know what you mean by your last question “all levels of M+.”

Mythic 0 doesn’t have a timer, and not many affixes,
you should get a +2 key for completing a 0,
if you complete a + key in time it’ll upgrade, if you smash the timer you can upgrade it +3 levels, and the higher the key level the more affixes that make it more difficult, and the more health mobs/bosses have

At the start of a dungeon there is a little pedestal. You click it and chuck your key in the slot, hit “start” and there is a short countdown and the dungeon begins scaled up to whatever keystone you did with the appropriate affix.

You get a new one each week when you open your vault. If you didn’t earn a vault, you can talk to an NPC and they’ll give you one that’s been downgraded depending on your inactivity.

For the week it does. At the start of a new week you’ll get a new keystone and it’s level will depend on your vault completion. If you completed a higher level vault, it’ll be equal to that level (or minus 1 if you didn’t time your highest level key IIRC), if you didn’t complete a higher level vault, it’ll degrade 1.

The only way to downgrade a key is to:

a) Finish the dungeon but miss a timer. (-1 and rerolls the key).
b) Start the dungeon and reset it before completion (-1 and same dungeon)
c) Talk to an NPC in Oribos and ask him to drop your key level (-1 and same dungeon).

If you fail a key but it is not your key that has been used, then your key remains the same.
