False. You can still get the red scythe if you push him before he goes red. This was a myth perpetuated by Asmongold a long time ago.
Mythic has a 1% chance of dropping the blue and an independent 1% chance of dropping the red, and he can drop either or both regardless of how quickly you kill him.
Source: I got the red scythe on a kill that took about 32 seconds in BFA, and I’ve been doing dozens of these runs and have seen many, many other players get the red scythe despite us killing the boss that quickly.

regardless, can you see where my confusion might have come from if this was my first time killing Argus fast enough to single phase him?
Is this a new issue? We single phased him many times in BfA and people always got their loot. I got the scythe 3 times (on different characters).
since you’re confused, I’m sure that someone in your group told you that you have to wait for the red phase?
you can one phase him and he can still drop the scythe
yeah, we were all under the impression red drops on secret mythic phase given enough dps, otherwise blue drops
