Adding more tank specs doesnt create more tanks, they just make more specs available to the people who already tank.
I could spill the secret on how to get more tanks in your pug que, but my instruction to dps players would break code of conduct.

screwing up as a tank feels way worse mentally than screwing up as a dps at least thats how it is for me and thats not to say the rest of the group would even care but in my mind its a complete failure

yeah I don’t tank mostly because the % routes in m+ stress me out. although I can get away with this as I’m a career healer main. every time I’m trying to use LFG to gear a dps alt, the two healer and tank roles take eons to fill.
Tanks gotta lead while healers have to assume responsibility for everyone. although when you get to like 10-12+ in keys, those skilled dps players become extremely important and highly sought after.
I still think the lack of tanks and healers comes from the fact that people don’t wanna lead or have a lot of responsibility. with that said, I like the current system (I benefit a lot from it lol) and don’t really want to see it change in any significant way.

You say that like it’s a bad thing. I tank from time to time, and would enjoy more specs to learn. DPS have like 20+ specs to rotate through, let tanks have more variety than 6.

Well, the last 4 times they tried adding new tanks it didn’t solve the shortage.

Adding more tanks wont stop me from completely tarding out as a tank. Mechanics are fine, but it is definitely a leadership role and I’ll be honest there’s been way too many times I’m in a dungeon, especially for the first time and I’m like…uh…shoot. Where am I going?

This is just a weird online statement if I ever heard one. 
I don’t want to blame Ion ( but it is probably his fault) every toon I ever brought to BG to heal horde players got mercilessly and heartlessly , NERFED!
God forbid you hold the horde up for a few sessions, your toon gets ravaged by biased alliance devs.
I have a couple healers I leveled to understand the class, but I would not bring them to dungeon or BG for pure guttural unholy fear, they would be destroyed again by Alliance loving evil empire developers.

I had to look up when the last time we had an actual dungeon with branching paths was because it’s been so long and the closest I can get is Waycrest Manor, and that place is 7 years old now.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but imo this is silly.
As a “girlie”, I don’t play races or specs just because of how they look or what the spells look like. I play many different races and specs because I like them. I’m fairly confident that a majority don’t care.
I used to tank back during Cata and to the end of MoP because I enjoyed it and I had a good group of friends and guildies that supported me through the learning process. WoD came and most of my friends stopped playing. Stepping into LFG was painful: toxic players, getting yelled at and belittled when you make a mistake, getting yelled at and belittled if dps made a mistake, no patience when trying to learn new places and mechanics because of the GOGOGO culture that set in. That is no way fun for me. So I stopped tanking and mostly did heals until BfA.
This is what kills tanking for people. It’s a completely community made problem and most people don’t want to better themselves to make it tolerable again.

You could add 5 new healers and 5 new tanks, and outside of a burst of new players for a few weeks, absolutely nothing would change.

I have two Prot warriors(one in each faction, one is significantly better geared than the other), a Blood DK, and a Prot Pally(That also doubles as holy). They’re all 80s.
Prot warrior is my favourite kind of tanking followed by Prot Pally. Blood DK is okay but you have a lot more to manage than the other two(DK feels like a mixture of Pally and Warrior put together). About the only thing DK has over the others is the potent self heals that are part of your normal tanking rotation.
I tank because I like tanking but the community is pretty awful and likes to “help” by pulling extra mobs because they think that mega pulls are always “faster”.
I heal because I enjoy healing if the tanks aren’t pants on head stupid and know how to hold aggro instead of blaming you because they lost aggro to a single heal that you cast to save their life because they pulled boss to boss in their leveling greens.
The biggest reason that people don’t tank is because you’re expected to know every fight in every dungeon on every difficulty and the most optimal path to get there. You’re also expected to pull boss to boss even if your group doesn’t have the AoE to down the swarm of mobs any faster than if you’d just chain pulled. Smooth and slow is better than fast and DPS/the healer dying because people insist on megapulls all the time.
Speaking as a tank:
You pulling adds makes my job more annoying.
Initial aggro is a thing and it is important.
If you don’t think the tank is going fast enough ask them nicely to do bigger pulls and maybe explain the reason. Don’t just say “Pull more” and then swear at them or start pulling extra to “help”.

To be fair, adding more tank specs and/or classes isn’t going to make more people tank.
The only way to make people tank is to incentivize tanking at all times(Like they do when there’s a tank shortage) but then you’d just end up with a lot of really bad tanks tanking for free gear.
The solution is simple. Make an achievement to queue as tank 100 times and you get a tank mount.

Turn back to WotLK or at the absolute latest MoP. I’d start tanking again.
