My Thoughts on Remix and Season of Discovery

So as you can tell by the title, I have some thoughts about the Remix system, and no, this isn’t going to be a hate thread where I crap all over Remix, say it sucks or anything like that, because I actually like the Remix system, especially this version with the staggered releases so I can focus my attention on what I can get now.

But I think there’s an opportunity here for Blizzard to do more with these systems in a way that keeps players engaged, and as you can also tell by the title, this is where Season of Discovery comes into play.

Many players, myself included, loved Season of Discovery. We loved getting access to new toys for our classes, we loved getting access to new content in the form of level up raids, unlocking runes via class interactions with class specific quests or NPCs etc. It was a fantastic system. But after Season of Discovery wrapped, my immediate thoughts were revolving around a simple question.

How could Blizzard continue Season of Discovery moving forward?

This was a puzzle for me, because setting up an entire Season of Discovery system for say, TBC, wouldn’t feel as good for players compared to how the system worked in vanilla. But then I guess it clicked last night while I was laying in my bed. What if Blizzard combined both Remix and Season of Discovery in the future?

After all, Eternus is experimenting with the timeline. She and her followers are pulling and pushing things around. In Legion Remix specifically your character is from a different timeline and is yanked into the one you’re currently in, which is why you have amnesia concerning your past. This would be the perfect opportunity to explore ‘what if’ style changes where the world is different because of timeline shenanigans. New content could be added to the game for Remix during the 100+ days the mode is available.

What if, for example, Varian and Vol’jin both survived the events of the Broken Shore? How would events play out differently? How might the events of the expansion changed if say, Prince Farondis never rebelled against Azshara and they never became ghosts? What if Xavius, instead of using the corrupted Tear of Elune to turn Ysera to the Nightmare, used it on Malfurion instead?

This would be the perfect environment to explore these types of changes, or worse ones with different world tiers, where previously safe places like Highmountain are now permanently under the control of Feltotem Tauren, where Dalaran is a ruin (again) crashed into the waters of the Broken Shore after being attacked by powerful Legion ships.

Additionally, it would allow for Blizzard to update the visuals of the zones we go to, both with regards to models, environments, etc. Give these areas a fresh coat of paint that remains on retail realms even after the new Remix event has ended.

What do you all think?

Not that many.

They did a (VERY) simple version of this in Dragonflight, where they had us going into alternate timelines, and of course a very in-depth version of this in Warlords of Draenor. It would be kind of neat if they did some mid-complexity content in this vein, along the lines of what you’re saying. Maybe not an alternate timeline for an entire expansion at once, but even just individual zones or parts of zones as between-patch content.

The secrets and quest lines for the runes were cool.
The Ashenvale event was crazy. The STV one… not so much.

Warlock tanking was fun. Shaman not so much.

I like SoD Rogue. That version of Rogue is better than the one on live. The builds you can play on Retail are placebo, nothing changes.

But on SoD when you change builds on Rogue you have to change everything, your gear, your weapons, use different abilities. I really liked the Backstab build. I didn’t even care what was meta. Feels much more like a proper RPG. Not to mention tanking.

I’m also a former SoD Enjoyers so this Remix stuff has me on a hook because of the design. It made classic enjoyable in a way I didn’t think i could like!

I like the alternate timeline idea - maybe it could kinda be the actions that lead to the Varian we saw in the time rifts?
