My problem with the faction war, not enough focus on the old world

Yes, yes, Blizzard like using the new shine zones they added but really, I always found it a missed opportunity when the faction war(or even major threats like the Legion) just pretends the rest of the world does not exist!

Hell, the war campaign could have had us go to several different hotspots! Show more fighting in Ashenvale and Lordearon. At best we only got mission boards to try and piece together what is going on. I am really hoping the last two patch focus more on old world zones.

Yeah that would have been cool to actually see Ruins of Alterac being conquered and set up as a Horde base instead of just being tied to a mission for my followers.

Missed opportunity right there.

I am all for more use of kalimdor and eastern kingdoms.

Silverpine forest; would be a great place as the alliance tries to stomp out remaining forsaken strongholds.

Swamp of sorrows; there is alreay a good deal of fighting there.

Then of course kalimdor has north and south barrens and azshara.

It would be cool to see the Forsaken actually rebuild Alterac too.

I thought the swamp was decisively Alliance since Stonard fell during Cata. It would be cool to see the Dragonmaw actually expand to help New Kargath in the Badlands. The Badlands is like Gorgrond, I’d like to see some Iron Horde activity there tbqh.

I know the argument that this would spend resources for in-game stuff and honestly… I don’t care, Blizzard could give us a mid-xpac book to expand on the situation of all the old zones of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, this would be quite cool and better than nothing or those “lore relevant” mission table things.

Yeah I always thought it was amusing how this expansion is called Battle for Azeroth when it’s more so Battle for Kul’tiras/Zandalar.

I’m of the opinion that in some manner the faction war story was forced down the writers throats (I bet HvA sells way better even though it’s doomed to failure) and all the assets were made for a Kul Tiras and Zandalar xpac (probably Old Gods) so there was no chance for any revamp of multiple old zones.

I wasnt aware that alliance took the swamp. If its not contested anymore then badlands would be a great place to look into next. Although im not sure of much fighting in the area.

Im thought that the dragonmaw was pretty much done since siding woth garrosh in mop. The similarity with gorgrond is interesting, maybe the mag’har would show interest in the area.

To be fair we have two war fronts, and the pre events.

I wish they did more war fronts, frankly.

I agree, a proper faction war expansion should have focused entirely on the old world and how such a war would affect it, not begin the expansion with the explosive bits and relegate the rest to forever-in-limbo war fronts. Cata did it better than MoP or BfA.

True!
They waste energies adding a lot of new Islands and new territories that will be abandoned next expansion. All they need to do is put some good quality storyline quests that evolve any part of the existing world .

Why not smoothly change zones through continuous history into what it will become as we progress through them.

That would keep me hooked for quite a looong time.

Could have been some awesome content if they had used some of the old zones as others have pointed out.

Like Zandalar forces landing in stranglethorn and recruiting the Gurabashi again to attack the alliance.

Or the Alliance pushing north and taking out horde forces and rebuilding old cities.

Forsaken going to Northrend to recruit/free powerful undead to work with the horde.

The Alliance bringing Pandaria over to the Alliance and pushing the Horde out.

With swamp of sorrows it’s hard to say who claimed it as the horde questline shows us repel the alliance

I think alot of the problem is BfA essentially being three expansions in one. While interrelated, the plotlines are also competing with each other for time and resources. What we could have had was:

  • The faction war expansion. Warfronts and revamps across the old world. Turn the mission table lore into actual, playable content.
  • The South Seas expansion. A battered and bloodied Alliance and Horde look for new allies to help rebuild. Kul Tiras and Mechagon, Zandalar and Kezan. Then Nazjatar and Azshara.
  • The Old God expansion. N’zoth.

Then there wouldn’t be this mad rush to reset the status quo, and end the faction war in a couple patches because “Surprise! Tentacles!”.

I am actually very much against revamping old zones to fit current content, of for no other reason than you end up with artifacts after the expansion is over like the level 90 elite Korkron units that are still scattered all over northern barrens that are extremely out of place in a post-Garrosh setting.

If they had the time and the resources to revamp old zones every expansion that would be one thing, but they simply don’t, and Personnaly I’d rather see new places like Kul Tiras and Zandalar than constantly revisit old zones playing ‘who gets written to be the punching bag this time’.

Having said all that, I do agree with Arlifrex in that we could have done with more Warfronts this expansion. They were pushed as a major feature and having only two set in relatively out of the way places from where the brunt of the conflict should actually be occurring is kind of disappointing. I don’t really think any cares who controls the ruins of Stormgarde or the charred remains of Darkshore.

Dragonmaw are still in the Horde. Horde pvp prestige level 1 has Sylvanas give the PC an award with all notable Horde faction leaders present. One of those in attendance is a Dragonmaw Orc named Gorfax Angerfang.

This has always been a problem by Blizzard. In Legion aside from the new zones we did not get alot of Old World actions. Well, actually the order halls gave us some but not enough in my book.

I had wish at least the war campaign would be as long as the order hall campaigns combined but it was not. And the war campaign was too focused on the new zones.

I agree! My most favorite part of this xpac so far has either been the War of Thorns pre-exp content or the Darkshore related scenarios/warfront.

For old school vanilla players like myself in particular the old world zones like Ashenvale and Darkshore have so much more player investment in them. Having the War of Thorns taking place in Ashenvale/Darkshore was a simple and effective nostalgia bat and I wish they used it more XD

Not a fan of cataclysm darkshore.
Good lord did Blizzard do a number on it.

I wish the revamp lessened the damage since then.
Thrall has supposedly healed the planet when Garrosh was going on his little world domination quest.
So where are its results?
